I bought a head torch from Hong Kong. You know, the 4,000,000,000 lumins for £3 including delivery job ;)
Anyway it didn't even make it out of the house before the case snapped! I guess for the most part, the saying is true, you get what you pay for!
...Does anyone have a modestly priced head torch they are very happy with that they wouldn't mind giving me a heads-up on please? :D

I use a petzl elite, wasn't too expensive!
I have used one of these (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003YC9RO6/ref=s9_simh_gw_p86_d0_i4?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0M1WJA9TH21Z8GP6Z3D1&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=317828027&pf_rd_i=468294) for about five years now and for the money it is great

Nice one lads!
Just bought an Energizer (http://r.ebay.com/UQmI2R) for £8.50
The community deliver as usual! Thanks Aman!

Another head torch that looks good is the Alpkit Gamma (http://www.alpkit.com/gamma) . I have not used one but for £15 it might be worth a go
Sorry, too late

Alpkit Gamma has to be the absolute best value in headtorches around.

Bought one recently on a group buy and I'm well impressed.

The Alpkit ones are good, I don't like the battery pack on the back though, they remind me of my old caving Petzls which used to stretch after a few outings.
A basic Petzl Tikka will see you right

Similar to posted above, my lab ordered a bunch of the Engergizer Advanced headlamps about 7 years ago, only a few of us still have it (recently got in an order of Petzl Tikka lamps, I grabbed one to put in my toolbox), the Energizer work well, will wear out, but I just wish the order of light selections (spot/flood/spot&flood/red) was kinda reversed, put the red first, entire point of using red for nighttime use is to preserve night vision, but still, has served me well enough when running wires through the dark corners of aircraft.

Are there redundant L.E.D's on the alpkit gamma?
The three small one's above the main big light ! or is mine a duffer? I've had it over a year, It's great but a mate who liked it asked.. "so what do these do?"
Any ideas ? Do yours work? if so, on what setting?
Cheers !

Press and hold the on/off switch for three seconds to switch from the main beam to the smaller LEDs, after that click it to toggle between them. Press and hold again to go back to main beam.

Just started another thread on a very good article I read called "Night vision - The red light myth" (http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?4148-Night-vision-The-red-light-myth)

I've just bought a petzl tactikka plus from eBay for £28 delivered. Very small, very light and more than adequate power. I've had several cheaper ones over the past few years, all shapes and sizes and the simplicity of this one is great. It also has a red 'visor' that flicks over the LEDs so you can have it instantly on red.

Check your batteries are the right way round Suggy....Gammas are great but LEDs dont work if battery polarity is wrong...apparently

In which case the main beam would'nt be working either, but since it is we can assume he does'nt know how to switch between them.

Err i seem to remember a note attached when I bought mine warning of just that problem, that the main works but not the 3 smaller ones.

On the Alpkit Gamma, if you set it to red or green, or white LEDs, does it remember your last selection the next time you turn it on, or do you have to cycle through the modes to get it to the mode you left it on?

you have to start again from white - if i remember rightly. Mine gave up the ghost about 10 months ago

...Does anyone have a modestly priced head torch they are very happy with that they wouldn't mind giving me a heads-up on please? :DI love my Petzl Tikka XP Headtorch (http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/kit/reviews/bushcraft-kit-list-for-2-3-days-in-winter.html#headtorch), it's served me well for many years, still as good as the day I bought it, haven't seen what they cost nowadays but it wasn't too outrageous at the time, well worth the money.
It's versatile, powerful & well-built.

I have an alpkit gamma, superb bit of kit, the 5 watt Cree is like a search light, then lower power 1 watt leds are in white, green and red (also the red flashes)
Also has a rear red light on the battery pack, ideal for someone to follow or walking on back roads after dark.
My only tiny niggle is the white light comes on first, so if you are trying to preserve your night vision it's to late ( I just smother the lamp intil red is on )

I own and use two headtorches:
My main user is a Petzl Tikka2 XP (the old 60 lumens version) with a Petzl Core rechargable battery and the Adapt Tikka2 system. The Core battery has saved me a lot of money on batteries (as well as saving the environment for a substantial amount of used batteries) -and it can easily be dismantled from the torch, allowing one to bring conventional batteries for longer treks/as a back-up.
My back-up headtorch is a Petzl Tacktikka Plus; a sturdy, cheap and lightweight workhorse with plenty of light for most situations.
