hello,
I thought this might interest NBC forum members. 'Supermarket Brand' have in
stock Pet Smart large blocks of compact packed fine wood shavings for 69p.
The block is a tightly packed bale of wood shavings for small animals cages,
far cheaper than a purchase from the pet store branded names.
Anyway, I bought one of these large blocks a whileback which would be more than
ample to fill a great number of tobacco tinswith tinder, pending use lasts up to a
year or more.
The shavings do light first time as they're dry being tight packed & cellophane
wrapped into this bale or brick. I could suggest as done previous, amounts were
smoked a little more as you would in the processing making of 'char cloth' which
being slightly darkended & charred ignites quicker or another amount was soaked
in turps then dried stored in the shed due to additive for fire safety ignites even
quicker as you can imagine.
As suggested 69p a fraction of the costs, which is very little to pay for in comparison
to these commercial tins of fire lighting dust if you think about it.
Same goes for these bundles of kindling sticks, these can be processed as you would
a fire stick/feather stick, shavings, wood chips etc.. tinder dry ready to pack into your
kit or tinder tin saves looking around for fire starting material when setting up camp in
this weather we are experiencing just now & for under a £1.00 to boot.
Regards
David
Ps.Edited as I included the store brand name :ashamed: Oops!

hello,
Thanks for the positive feedback. Well it's been tried & tested
saves going down to the saw mill/joiners shop filling a bag as
I have done in the past then filling the baccy tin (tinderbox)
when required, pending use as Chubbs said,
'the whole bag should last a lifetime.'
The bundles of kindling sticks 'Pine' I've used previous,
I noted most of these are apart from dry, have a liberal coating
of resin to boot so an added bonus, great ingniter.
Regards
David

I filled one tindertin full of balsa shavings........ Not sure the idea will work, but I will try it.

Nice idea with the pet stuff, will have to try and sneak some on the next shop... No pets see !!

I have also seen some compressed sawdust bricks.......Apparently good for long burning, which will be good for cooking over.... Going to try them to. :)

That sounds like a good idea. I have one of those brick making machines at home and regulary make them out of old newspapers for the fire. I would have thought that some sort of binding ingredient would have to be used to keep them together though.

I wonder if the sap is mixed with something?.....

Anyway, David, While out this morning, I went into a discount shop like B&M, and they had the same stuff in.... 50p.

Needless to say, I got some without hesitation.. :)

Now that sounds like a great idea, I have a bucket load of mushed papers ready to make blocks in the garden. I'm going out now to give it a try.

hello,
Si certainly no problem there, as I said received a spool of Jute
divided it up, there's enough in the length cut into smaller pieces
rough it up, fray it & it will give you plenty, keep you going for a
while, more if you need it?
Thanks for the offer of flint always welcomed

David
