For a first time I would buy a knife making kit so you have everything you need, that's what i plan to do when I have my first go :)

I was looking at buying one of these off of eBay (http://tinyurl.com/bt7a55a).

But I'm going to wait, as I seem to just want to make everything bushcrafty at the moment, which means I'll actually succeed in very little.
You can buy some beautiful wood blocks of the tinterweb too for your handles.

Good luck mate! Make sure you post some pics :D

I made my first knife from a kit, then went on to make several more just by buying the bits you need.
stick with the stick tang for your first one ( pardon the pun ) loads of blades and wood to choose from and easy to make
you don't need any special tools - power drill, sander, epoxy glue some files time and imagination is about all you need
you can add to the list as you go on, be patient don't rush and it will turn out usable.
Cheers Bri
