i am about to make my second UQ,this one will be goose down filled, but what i was hoping to find out is whether horizontal or vertical baffles are best,if in fact there any differences at all,all suggestions and or comments would help.

Hello Fish. This is a complete (educated) guess on my part, but I'd go for your second diagram. My logic is two fold.

1. there should be less movement of the down as the baffles are shorter (I was thinking that in your first diagram how cold would it be if the all the down in the centre baffle went south)
2. the stiching that defines each baffle is smaller and I guess this is where you will lose the heat.

I'd love to hear how you get on,

M@

i was worried that if the baffles were across the underquilt the down would sag to the bottom leaving no insulation for the shoulders.

Thing like this BAFFLE me :happy-clapping: ----------------Ok Ok I'm going - no need to shout.

alright sensible mode now - have you any idea how much you would charge yet, I was brought up believing
that you should pay the person who made it not the damn shop owner.
cheers Bri

keep the baffles as they are, then run a couple of rows of stitching lengthways to form a check pattern, then the down would be held both ways

could double the cold spots where the seams are?

How critical is weight going to be here?

How about two lightweight 'liners' - Each taking half the duck down and each stitched with baffles as per your two diagrams. These then get combined together to produce the finished UQ. This of course gives another small air gap between the two sections as a further possible aid to insulation.

Hi, would a diamond quilting pattern work, as you should get "the best of both worlds" . Just a thought.... cheers Ian...

I was going to suggest the same thing. Quilts are/have been, made like that for decades, so one would assume it's an efficient solution.

So we can see the quilted diamond effect.

I take it you are going to sew through the top and bottom layers of fabric forming a 'UUUUUUU' pattern rather than forming box sections '[][][][][][][]' If thats the case then I would form it length ways avoiding the cold shoulders.

Much like these really http://www.hammockgear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_7_14&products_id=5
