Do I need to make a hobo stove?

I have an aliminuum Trangia windshield base in which I use my Trangia meths burner and another model I have. Thing is could one also light a wood fire in it as well without melting/warping the aliminuum?

Wood burns about 450F and Ali's melting point is given as 660F so it should be alright but if there is a draught then we can get much higher wood temps. I know I could try it but it would be a one shot experiment if it did melt.

Start off with a steel tin can (with holes in) and see if you feel happy carrying it around. It will double as a windshield for your burner. If you like it, there's plenty of plans for hobo stoves out there. I copied Wayland's idea, based arounf a 10cm Zebra Billy, which it packs around and stores your burner too (http://www.ravenlore.co.uk/html/stove_use.html).

At the end of the day, it's up to what you prefer mate. Some people are quite happy with a Crusader-type cooking arrangement, some go for a Pocket-Rocket.

I'd avoid using the ally pots as they'll get soft and probably end up useless, plenty of stainless steel pots to be found in those home bargain stores like Wilkos etc.
