Hi all, spotted this FUN GUY while walking the dog this morning.

They're not the best photo's "phone camera". Will have to get a decent pocket size proper job and yes Sapper it's been there a long time.

apparently the layers are similar to a trees growth rings

I think it's called diadinaconcentrica and it takes a spark really well once it's dry.

daldinia concentrica is King Alfreds cakes, thats a bracket fungus.. Fomes Formentarius or Horses Hoof fungus

It could possibly be Fomitopsis pinicola (Fomitopsidaceae) RED-BELTED BRACKET If it is that, it's rare in Britain

But more likely to be the one you said Sapper ie:- Fomes fomentarius (Fomitaceae) HOOF FUNGUS

Good old fomes formentarius - aka - Horse hoof fungus - aka false tinder fungus.

Got tons of them in the woods around here. Here is a vid on how you can use it as a tinder after some hefty processing....

interesting reading,i was not aware the horseshoe fungus could be black,i've only ever seen them with browns/dark cream colours on all the web pictures and videos ....it certainly looks the right shape.

am now thinking i may have spotted a few and dismissed them due to the colour.

am now thinking i may have spotted a few and dismissed them due to the colour.

It was slate grey on top, but was raining when photographed making it appear darker. Pinkish underside, the picture's don't do it justice really.
