My late father acquired this years ago. The original handle was perished and the head was a bit tatty, so he had it chromed, put a handle of sorts on it and hung it on his wall, along with a world war one bayonet, a home made bowie knife and various other items that could have seen me arrested as a silly teenager.

I'd like to restore it but haven't a clue about the original handle material, would it be hickory?? Also would the rivets be brass or cold riveted mild steel and how to remove chrome?

Bob the old axe looks alright to me,lets have a couple of closer pitchers,I'm not that well up on wood but it looks like ringed maple to me.The rivets look like brass,I dont think you would gain anything by trying to restore it.I think when they were issued they were painted all over black.Lets have some closer pics of the head and handle,I'm also pritty shore it had a head sheath when issued.Hope is helps, dont mess it up...................TONY.

The rivets are brass and the handle would probably break if I tried chopping anything with it, it's ornamental and not original. I was asking what the original rivets and handle would have been made from. The old fellah had the head chromed in the late seventies at a company his firm used. I'd like to remove it, get some decent wood and I think mild steel dowel, cold riveted would look better.

hello,
Try Googling 'Brades Tools' Fireman Axes. I had a chat with a friend of mine 'Old Smoke' (Fireman)
from what details I have, the handle may well have originally been 'Ash' dunno about the rivets though?
Maybe a later addition? Good luck with the restoration.
Regards
David
