For my 30th birthday my wife bought me one of Woodlore's Ray Mears knives. They only made 300 of this particular model, I can honestly say it is one of my prized possessions.

Has anyone else got one?

Kai

Sorry the photos are a bit poor in quality, I took them on my iPhone, any idea why they are displaying upside down? They are not at my end:

I used to be into the whole custom thing for a long time but I saw the light I really don't think a custom knife is worth the money often asked. On the other hand if some people do then fair play to them.

Lovely thing mate, and in no way am I criticising but "uncle Ray" is a bit pricey, think he's asking 30 quid for a leather luggage tag at the moment(first example I could think of) really? His latest woodlore knife is nearly 500 quid and There's a waiting list

I'm a Yorkshireman.....that enables me to get away with complaining about the cost of most things....too tight to bleed me ;) It is a tad expensive though

Hey Mark, I've made a few yes, from files, ground flat stock, power hacksaw blades and even tried forging one (that wasn't easy!) I never put the time and effort into it to make them look as clean as you do, but they work and that's all that matters to me as I want a knife and not a work of art..I'd still rather use my moras over anything.

Sorry mate, missed your post. :)

I have a mora 510 i use aswell. Every time i make myself a knife, someone offer money for it and i sell it, lol.

Yeah forging is a challenge, i have an anvil and struggle to make a firesteel out of a file, though when i got some mild steel bar, i found things easier, so i made a tripod for over a fire. Not tried a knife yet. :)

About knives not being worth it though, depends on the knife. I'd say woodlores, S4's and things like that are over priced, but if the demand is there...... who wouldn't want to earn that much per knife. If you could get it you'd be daft to say nah, i'm good at this cheaper price :)

My knives are priced as low as i can go for what you get. I always aimed to keep the price similar to the F1 which is a solid working knife and no one really complains about those. When you get into using fancy steel, the cost goes up as there is more kit needed, more time, more expense etc. its a rubbish job really, but i love making knives. I struggle to pay bills more than any thing else, i aint rolling in it thats for sure. Been making 4 years now, for the first 3 i was doing it as a hobby and every penny i made went into knifemaking stuff. Now i do it full time, i struggle.

I know three people personally, (as in I meet them face to face regularly, rather than just talk to them on forums) who own "woodlore" knives and none of them use them. They have all put them away in a draw and use various other tools instead.

They tend to get shown around, like trophies:confused2:

Not my thing at all but each to their own.

I have a mixture of knives. Like many on here probably, I started with a SAK in my young days and things progressed from there. Fishing took me into the sheath knife side of things and a renewed interest in the outdoors introduced me to Moras.

I do like having something 'special' though. It was a working party at Dave Budds that introduced me to the world of hand forged knives and I immediately took to the look and feel of them. As such I bought one of his knives and have used it ever since as any tool should be. I have also bought 2 knife blanks from Dave and handled them myself, both as a gift to my kids and as something different for their first fixed blade knives. They also use theirs rather than becoming something stuck on a shelf like an ornament.

Generally however, my main knife is the Mora Clipper (now renamed of course) more to do with the fact that I can allow the Scouts to use it when required without any upset. I probably won't buy another forged knife until my current one reaches the end of its life through some stupid act on my behalf, unless of course I give in and get that slightly shorter blade length one for carving that I keep thinking about, and then I can put that nice bit of antler on it... :ashamed:
