We had a little thing going in another thread about a safe way to sleep higher up in a tree in a hammock.
Here is how it works. This is a professional arborists method called Alternate Lanyard Technique, and is suitable for tree with crotches somewhat close together and limbs relatively close to the ground. I know other methods but this one is the simplest and safest.
It is described in The Tree Climber's Companion, the key arborists sourcebook, available in full as a pdf on www.scribd.com
Enjoy!

Ah that is a pretty standard topic/solution for stormy mountain/arctic camping and big wall climbing.
The Pee bottle. (Ladies this works for you too. Ask me how...)
Or just climb down. :-)
If you are feeling really jiffity-split then you can always drop an abseil rope down and ab down / and climb back up with a jumar.

Well I am embarrassed to say that I am totally bl@@dy rubbish at football...and tennis and golf. And sprinting. I am not very good at sprinting. At all.
Ah yes...gymnastics. Please don't ask me to do gymnastics. That's a bad scene for me.
Also not so good with chess. (I like it, I just suck)

Well, I'm glad that you don't do football bloody hate it myself ( probably kick off now ) and used to be able to sprint but depends on what was chasing me ha ha.
And chess can play but like you I am really bad but keep playing :ashamed:
Thanks for posting this Susanne, though I can't see myself starting to use this simply on the grounds of all the extra kit it would require me to buy. I thought a 'pee bottle' was pretty standard for hammock users, but from the comments here I guess not.
Don't worry about football, I've always considered it to be for those with an overly developed herding instinct, as for golf, do it properly and get a bow and arrow and shoot at marks!
Thanks again,
Al

I'm surprised at this too, After having to to get up a couple of times to answer a call of nature, I fashioned a hammock 'HeWee' out of a 2L plastic water bottle and some paracord. Much more civilized than peeing over the side in the dark and hoping you don't hit your gear... or anyone else's!
Susanne, your knowledge, willingness to share and sheer gumption, never ceases to impress me. Good work that woman.

You can always rent a climbing harness and stuff.
Or, if there are a few folks who are interested then we could imagine popping over, bringing the needed gear and taking a day or so to do a little practical seminar.
Whaddya think?

Oooh, it's so tempting! I really can't justify starting another branch of outdoor activities, I really need to nail those I already try to do rather than spread myself even thinner.
When you talk about 'we could come over' are you part of survivalschule.at with Sepp & co. I'm sure I've seen on at least one of his videos.
Again, the idea of attending a coarse appeals greatly, but I know these sorts of coarses are generally outside of my budget sadly. I was genuinely interested in how you go about setting up a hammock with a tree to see if you had a safe way that didn't involve a lot of pricey kit I don't currently own. Thanks again! I'm sure others with fewer commitments than me will take you up on the offer of a coarse.

Welll, I will do a little video then. I will use a completely cut down gear set up that will still be safe.
How about that? :-)
"We" is more my own team, in this case probably it would just be me and my assistant. I am not part of the Survivalschule though we work together very nicely. Yes! On the "Bushcraft - a lot of it" video for instance. Awesome guy.
It doesn't have to be expensive. This is a passion and hobby for me. I don't do it for a living. Not much more than the cost of my travel. The more come, the less it costs.

I'll limit tree climbing to work and volunteer activities I think ;)

So when where and what cost? But might be interested if logistics are favourable

Well, if you can get 8-10 people together, you can suggest where and when. And the costs will depend on how many but would be in the 60-80 gbp range to cover travel from my location in the Alps, (based on London area). For you guys, I would not charge my time at all.
Now if we strike lucky and we get a weekend where I was planning to be in the UK anyway then it could be less.
Let's say 35-45 gbp each depending on how many.
Much more clever I think would be to add a whole bunch of other topics and get much more out of the fixed cost of me travelling over. If we stay within reason and have it be a full day out then I could still envisage doing that for the same price.
We could do:
Heated Tarp Tent
No-plastic options
String bed, bushcraft sofa, and sun lounger
Perception skills
...
Any number of things really.

Now any clues to when you are over? Because that will make a big difference as cost these days is always important.
