Hello, I bought the following stuff from fleabay (ANIMAL DREAMS WOOD BASED CAT LITTER x TWO 30 LITRE BAGS) and all I have to do is pour it into my wild woodgas stove and light the top with cotton balls and vaseline
Maybe your sainsbury stuff has fire retardants added,
Take a look on you tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWh21tjAe9g
Sorry to rub it in but I've had no problems, Hope this helps and best of luck, Jeff

Hi the one's I used in this thread (CLICK HERE (http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?5562-Yet-another-wood-gas-stove-!)) I just used a chunk of bog standard white block fire lighter type you get in Wilkinsons. Just a thought they are the pine ones and not the standard grey grit type ones ?

Hmmm... theres no mention of what wood they are made from but if you crumble them in your hand they look like mdf. theres a shiny coating on them that browns in the heat, I'm wondering if that is like you suggest, some kind of flame retardant coating

Can you not get them going by putting some tinder in with them instead of trying to directly light the pellets?
Try some cotton buds with Vaseline or fire paper etc.

I have found that they light very easily if you spread three wax soaked cotten pads on the top (magic biscuits) and light one of these. The wax melts into the top of the cat pellets and they burn from the top down then. (at least they do in my wild wood gas stove). hope this helps.

John mcc, yeah, they look like that, but mine don't seem to light, just brown on the outside. With bj's suggestion, i got the edges to glow and the surface to blacken. I'll try a different brand next time

Hi Blindgeek .... Been using the pellets since Xmas , not had any trouble lighting'em ,
I usually use a splash of meths in the top of my woodgas burning stove ...
Brilliant topdown burning with really good extended burn times compared with "found stuff" !!!
Keep trying it is so worth it !!!
Like Matt says "It aint arson if you bring it" ha ha ha lol
