Hello all you skilled leather workers on here.

I have just taken ownership of a rather nice Hultafors axe.

It comes with a small leather cover to stop me hurting my self

I'd likwe to make this a harder sheath rather than the gentle soft leather that it is.

.... any ideas how best to do this with absolutely no previous skills or tools for this task please.

Thanks

melt some bees wax or candle wax and brush it on the leather. Then use a heat gun/ paintstripper gun to carefully warm the leather which will soak in the wax as it melts. ( don't get too close with the heatgun or you will damage the leather). Repeat the process as many times as you want. Each time when cooled the leather will get harder and harder. Careful on any moving parts as if you make them too hard they will crack when you move them. On bag flaps or straps i usually don't do any more than two coats but the rest of it i would generally do three or four. Hope that helps!

You could use leather hardener, they sell it in shoe shops, not so bush crafty but still good.

Hope that's useful
