View Full Version : What you going to buy next/On wish list?

Whats on your next/wish list? New brew kit, Stove, Tent, Hammock, Tarp, Knife, Saw, Axe, Tool, Backpack, Sleeping bag, Sleeping mat, Tool? Etc etc etc..

Thought it would be a good idea to start a thread about what is on your wish list or what you're planning to buy next and why so why can share ideas and maybe get new ones. :)

I'll start us off...

Next:
*DD Frontline Hammock (Or other brand)
*DD 3x3 Tarp (Or other brand)

-I have been tempted for a while to try a hammock/tarp setup for various reasons so think this is going to be my next big purchase.

Wish list:
*Jungle Green Osprey Exos to replace my Grey/Orange version.
Or different pack altogether (pref olive/green or brown).

-Love Exos pack but don't like the color. Was waiting for one to come on ebay for a while and although didn't like the color the price was a bargain.

Stuff I need:
A bigger tarp, a lighter tent.

Stuff I fancy, but could live with out:
A bota bottle, USGI cookset.

Stuff I would like someone to get for me, as I'm too tight to buy them myself:
Mini Peak II, Haglofs rugged mountain pants.

I'm also on the hunt for material to mod a couple of pairs of trousers I have, which are still good to go, except for the frayed leg ends. I intend to trim / replace the frayed ends and reinforce the knees and backside. Might prove to be a complete waste of time, but if the idea in my head, translates to practical modifications, I'll have more usable walking / camping trousers, which is not a bad thing.

Unless the hdd is damaged I wouldn't worry about your files bud, Just remove the hard drive from bottom under the door and put it in a cheap external 2.5" usb sata housing then you can just plug it into new system ;) , May have to go into system manager and change drive partition as active though, but thats easy.

Does the system actually power on but not start Windows or does power not come on etc?

If it all powers on but Windows wont load you can easily fix it with Windows disc or install Windows again and choose "custom" install, It will install Widnows again and move all your data to folder on C: called "windows.old"

Tech and me have never really got on.

Before buying new lappy I would grab a cheapo battery of ebay, give it a try and then if system comes on purchase a genuine battery as it will last longer. The battery is usually the first thing to go on laptops and can result in no power at all or intermittent etc. Some laptops can run straight through power cable without battery but some are a pain in the arse and only run of lead if battery is in/working.

Skins for my skis...just don't really want to spend the money. The prices on them is outrageous! (starting at 60£), and they probably need replacing every 2 years or so, if they will last that long.
so I may just decide to go on snow shoes...and bring the skis on the pulk for downhill and flat ground.

Else a quality hatchet, a peasant knife, a Jacklore knife from Sandy (I have followed him on YT since he started making knives), a Wenger Ranger Wood 55, a lighter hammock and tarp for summer use,
the willpower to get out there and use it all...in no particlular order.

But first...a pack of hot glue to attach the external mic to my goPro cam. I tried buying today, but at the local "Biltema" shop they where not interested in selling anything today. I left in disgust after
waiting for 10 minutes at the cashier point with nobody showing up to take my money...

Sony HDR-AS30v has built in wifi and GPS too :) There is an app for Android phones for it, to control it via remote, and set up the shot. It's about half the price of the GoPro black as well.
The GPS can be a few metres out, and the speed readout has a bit of a delay on it, but it's generally a great camera, especially for the price :D

Worth considering as an alternative (means you can spend more on other stuff too ;) )

Edit, forgot to add, the Sony doesn't have 4k, but there aren't many editing suits around that use 4k at the moment anyway, so not a bit issue really.

No it's to small. It will probably work nicely, but the wood I can find around here is usually full of moisture, so I need a larger flame so that when I put on a stick or two, the flame is not snuffed out, and large enough flame to dry out whatever I put in...

It's so wet here, that people often bring firewood from home to have something dry to get a good fire going, so that wet wood can have a chance to dry and ignite in the fire....thats life in the coastal Scandinavian Montane Birch forest....

But isn't the Firebox you're referring to just about the same size?

True that...I've looked around my local area and some folks are selling them for a little less than $1k, but that's still quite a chunk of change and a major investment for me. I know bud, Realized after posting. The DD is polyester and the Tatonka is 65/35 Polycotton/PU mix. Not going to make much difference though really. Especially not £40's worth of difference.

For £75 or more I would be looking at getting a proper oilskin/canvas tarp etc :)

Oh trust me, it makes a big difference :) PU tarps will last maybe a year, and then they leak like sieves. They are also very vulnerable to sparks, embers, thorns, and abrasion. There are people that are still using poly-cotton tarps after 8 years, maybe longer. I've had mine about 2-3 years and it has been set up in brambles, near hawthorns, under sappy pines, and out on the moor. It's had people fall into it and dogs run over it while set up, and it's still going strong. Embers wont melt holes in them either :D

I have to disagree, I have had my polyurethane True North tarp for about five years or more and is still going strong and it does get used quite often with open fires.

My walking boots need replacing. Think I am going back to good old fashioned leather boots. Gore tex boots just stops working in a short time, and just not worth it.
So back to Norwegian army M- 77 boots. Nice non slip sole, all you need is to get them large enough to wear some felted wool socks in them and your feet are always toast.
There is some more maintenance, but a good shoe brush and a tin of KIWI will keep your feet dry for many good hours...yup...thats what I want.

They look pretty sturdy. I used to love my german para boots, I had two pairs last me ten years between them. i think they would have lasted longer if I'd looked after them better. anyway they were so hot and heavy in the summer so now I use walking boots. but they're nowhere near as solid feeling.

They are not to bad witha decent insole and a pair of thick wool socks in them. The outer sole, is very grippy and non slip, but that comes at a cost. They tend to rot away after 4-5 years. These are sold by civvy retailers, but what people used to do back when everyone did national service, was to nick a pair when we had done our one year of millitary service. When it was worn out, you just gave it to a friend or a relative who was doing his bit for king king and country, and he would take them to the depot and replace them. That way you had free boots for life, lol. But you had to start off with a pair of genuine millitary issue with the correct stamps in them. The ones sold on the civillian market are the same, but lack the stamps.
