As it is, I'm tired of O1 and files, and am looking for an easy to harden stainless or semi-stainless which is with in an approximate price of 5 to 10 pound per knife.

Difficult criteria, but thats what I need.

Thanks a lot,

Joel

That's the problem, most stainless steels are more difficult to harden compared to O1. You could try D2 which is my favourite, its difficult to get hold of though and you need to air quench with aluminium plates.

D2 HT is complex.
Pre heat to 750c hold for 10 mins
ramp to 1010c hold for 45 minutes,
temper twice once at 250c and again at 260

Love to see anyone do that without a digitally controlled kiln. :)

Joel - Without proper HT kit, you are stuck with carbon steels mate. 10-- series, W2 or 01. Might be more but i cant think of them atm. Same for price, you want stainless, you pay for it and its more than the carbon steels.

I can do HT for you though if you make the blade. Any steel will be available then. But the costs for HTing a single blade wont be cheap compared to a small batch.
