Dakota fire hole.

Had the opportunity to spend a few hours in longleat forest today with the boys,we thought it would be fun to try a new fire cooking method and decided on the Dakota fire hole method,its a great fire for cooking in a stealthy way as the fire is in a hole so light being emitted is a minimum and when finished with is filled in easily with no visible trace of the fire being left. For those not familiar with the concept you basically dig a small diameter hole about 10 inches deep then at an angle another down to meet it ,this is the breathing hole for the fire,by controlling the air in through this breather you can regulate the burn of the fire.

T^ kind of restricted from using a dakota in my neck of the woods for several reasons the two most important being ....the whole area is peat soil which burns far too well, and aforementioned peat soil is dry as a bone at the moment - already had some major brush/moorland fires up in these parts destroying so much flora and fauna...we dont really need to have anymore.

Secondly...when the peat is wet theres usually a foot of water just below the surface ;)

Used one of these last year when on a course, the situation dictating I didn't want to be found but needed a fire.. The best thing about these being it is subsurface = less light signature, also the way they burn they burn off the majority of the smoke also! Perfect for the evading survivor!

I live on the border of 3 counties, West Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lancashire/Greater Manchester...cheshire is only 11 miles away too...this is the problem we get EVERY year !! Its not funny when its crackling just 250m from your front door

You're lucky with that one Fish. Lots of roots in the soil there. Have been in locations similar to that and had the roots catch themselves. They smoulder for a good long time too, and can travel quite far along. We did have our fire burning for a couple days though, which increased the risks some what.

Word of warning though, be very careful lol.
