a wonderful book!!
Trapped in a job he hated and up to his neck in debt, Guy Grieve's life was going nowhere. But, with a stroke of luck, his dream of escaping it all to live in remote Alaska suddenly came true. Miles from the nearest human being and armed with only the most basic equipment, Guy built a log cabin from scratch and began carving a life for himself through fishing, hunting, and diligently avoiding bears. Packed with adventure, humor, and insight, this is the gripping story of an ordinary man learning the ways of the wild.5*

Excellent book very hard to put down. Try his other book Wild Gourmet thats worth a read, its jointly writen with Tomasina Meirs about a trip around Britain eating only what they
could hunt-catch-forage or barter.
Going to Alaska myself (again) in august/sept, will post some pics when I get back.
cheers

I'm about half way through and it is very hard to put down. As was mentioned further up the thread, I first came across Guy Grieve in Wild Gourmets along with Thomasina Myers. I was impressed by them both - I'm who wouldn't be when they serve spiced squirrel popcorn! ?

Just finished it. Although I started reading it thinking he was/is a selfish *COUGH* for leaving his family to play at being R.L. Proenneke; To a certain extent I still feel the same. The book is very well written and you feel part of his struggle to make a home in the Alaskan wilderness. The people who help him out there are what kept him alive and the book often reminds you that a man can't do it alone out there; He needs friends and comunity. Guys relationship with his dog Fuzzy and the sled team for me was the most interesting parts of the whole book. I will read this book again...... and again. Fantastic read.
I have just ordered Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer which also looks like a great read.

Our Mr Grieve (and I'm just over half way through) is adamant that you must not surprise bears. I know also there there has been much discussion recently with regard to using mobile phones. But if out of the blue the Bear's mum rings up to wish him a happy birthday AND you've made a cake what are you to do? :confused2:
