View Full Version : Time in the wood.

Just back from a few nights in the wood. Solstice dawned grey and overcast, but the days since have brightened up. It may seem strange to those who 'Bushcraft' but I spend much of my time in the wood just sitting watching and listening. I don't carve things or forage apart from a few Ramsons in season, but that's just to disguise my awful cooking.. Not really..I manage the Rat packs quite well...;)

It takes me about 12 hours I suppose to "Tune in" to the wood, just moving slowly and quietly and then I feel I see and hear more. The wood is full of summer silence, not much birdsong and because it is isolated the only outside sounds I hear are aircraft far overhead occasionally. Insects seem to be the noisiest over the last few days and the occasionally punch up between Squirrels. I did hear the Buzzards overhead but couldn't spot them up through the heavy leaf canopy.

You've no doubt gathered from previous posts I'll never make a photographer :o but I managed to get this when I went to the woodland edge. They feed in the adjoining meadow.

The wood at times was full of sunlight and the ferns in places are waist high.

Foxgloves are common and I found a couple of brave little Bluebells surviving after the woodland blue carpet of a few weeks ago had gone.

My boundry stream is quite low after all the dry weather but the secret pools where the Deer drink are still full.

And so is my well, deep, cold and clean..:happy-clapping:

In the shady places the ground is still damp enough to show the Deer trails and sign.

We spoke recently of Rhododendrons..These beauties grow in the woodland next to mine.

So far..this small character is the only intruder...I have told him, any of this multiplying nonsense and he's had it!!! :D

To lessen the impact I make on the wood, I camp in various places each time in rotation and as a result I'm familiar with nearly all of the natural night sounds. The stream noises, the site by the Holly tree which makes a clicking noise when the wind blows, but a high pitched squeaking and low notes like a Double Bass had me baffled. I knew what it was, but where??
Found it next morning..:D

The lightest breeze and it makes woodland music..:happy-clapping:

Back in the world for a few days now....Hello to all who joined during my absence..welcome aboard. :)

T^ Thanks for sharing your Awen, mo chara :D.
I have heard a similar squeaking noise in my area - apparently it was from the wind rushing through the canopies of Blue and Norway Spruce :).

:) Those inter-twined trunks rubbing together make a whole range of spooky noises when the wind blows...;)

I also listen to noises at night whilst trying to sleep. Unfortunately though the origin of the snoring is all too apparent.

Lovely write up there mate.
