View Full Version : Sharpening Stone Set Recomendations
Can anybody recommend me a decent set of knife sharpening stones please. There is that many different ones to choose from I'm a bit lost.
All knives I have at the moment are a Svord Peasant, Mora Companion and a Condore Bushlore on the way.
Also how do you personally clean/maintain your knife?

I use japanese water stones and nagura stone and am very happy with them. Not much use in the field, a bit bulky and footery to use.
I use the slurry that the nagura stone makes to polish and get rid of stains. Saw it on Ray Mears and works a treat for me. Then a wee smear of olive oil and ready to go again.

Thnx bud, Seen the Ray Mears vid on the dvd extras and seems quite simple. Was wondering if this is what most people use or if they have different/better ways. Think I'll buy a pair :)

This is all I tend to use for most of my regular chore knives, other knives I'll use my DC4 or new 800x ceramic pocket stone.
Love this thing! Ignore the angles, I do.

Hi ADz
Using quality sharpening stones like Frazer suggested turns simple sharpening into an art form but as he mentioned impractical in the field.
I have a Swiss ISTOR sharpener that I use on my Leatherman , SAK and Svord Peasant knives very simple to use and razor sharp edges ...
even on the Leatherman that I used to struggle with keeping sharp , use it like a steel , little and often !!! Very small and light so extremely portable ...
For my Arthur Wright Bushcrafter ( scandi grind ) I use a Fallkniven DC4 and a small piece of non-slip mat , also small and portable ...
Only needed to use the diamond surface when I first got the knife , since then I have only needed to fine hone on the ceramic surface , again , little and often !!!
To maintain the surface , Leatherman and SAK hinge actions , I carry a WD40 no mess pen ...I have a separate small kitchen parer for food preparation
so don't worry about tainting my food with WD40 using the other knives ...
Not purist I know , but practical in the field and stores in kit bag / pouches / pockets ready to go !!!

Are you looking for something to use in the field or at home/permanent base-camp?
I use the Spyderco Doublestuff for field sharpening - it's inexpensive, small (can easily fit in a pocket), and I've also used it to sharpen my axes. :D
At home, you really can't beat a good set of Japanese waterstones - the 1000/6000 grit combo seems to suit most people.
Thnx for all the recomendations guys, I'm going to be checking them all out :)

Well both really, Looking for something decent for home and something portable for quick sharpens while out.
I bought this recently but not used it yet or know if its any good/fit for purpose.

FWIW, since this type of sharpener has predefined angles for the rods, it may or may not do a good job depending on what kind of grind and angle of grind that your knife has. I have one of these sharpeners and I noticed that it will get some of my flat grind knives really sharp but does a poor job on scandi grinds (at least on the knives that I have)

I use Japanese water-stones, a combo stone with 1000 and 6000 grit stones. I have just ordered some Arkansas pocket stones from Bushcraft store, does anyone have any experience with these?

Ah thanks for info bud.
I have a Condor Bushlore (http://www.heinnie.com/Condor-Bushlore-Knife/p-0-0-4941/), would this sharpener be suitable?

I think I will get a Fallkniven DC4 for out in the field touch ups.

well, I have a late 2011 model bushlore (the improved version) and its has a scandi-vex type grind with a secondary micro bevel on it. It didn't work that great on my bushlore but YMMV. I've heard that the latest models are closer to a full scandi grind. There are no absolutes but in general those type sharpeners really aren't angled for scandi grinds.
