Anyone tried the one man trecking bushcraft tent from the Bushcraft Store?

Looking to get a new smaller tent, money is tight so have been looking at this;

2.5kg for a one man tent is very very heavy. Don't forget, you will want room for you and all of your kit. I'm not a fan of one man tents or bivvi bags for exactly that reason. They tend to be heavy for what they are and don't leave enough room for your kit.

I think mine's called a Mil-com and was £60 posted from another firm. (in Eire) I've used mine primarily for 2-3 day treks with overnights up on the South Downs, here in Sussex, both summer and winter. I'm 5' 10" and find it's comfortably big enough for me. My Bergen with a rain cover goes under the "Porch" at night. It's taken a couple of rain/wind batterings from coastal gales without leaks, although I'm usually tucked away in the shelter of the Gorse bushes. Condensation hasn't been a problem either. It's not actually what people call light-weight but I've swopped the wire pegs for ally ones and don't find it too heavy for short trips. Dead easy to put up, 5 minutes max.

In summary. Fine for short trips, quite well made for the price and not too cramped and used within it's limits ie: not hanging off a mountain..:D Not a bad little tent.

I'm awaiting the arrival of a parcel, so I've had to postpone a trip for a few days, but if you're not in a hurry I'll post some photos of the tent in use on the trip. The photos above were taken when I gave it an airing and "Fabsil" spray prior to my last trip.

Cheers for the info saxon! Looks like a good little tent! Im not too bothered about weight as I consider shelter quite a priority! It will certainly be lighter than the 2 man one I have at present. I have looked at other one man tents that are more expensive and they all seem to be single skin, not very good for moisture! Also they have no room for a bergen etc, I know that there isnt an enormous space to store stuff on this tent but its better than nothing! I think this one ticks all the boxes, at a good price too! :)

Not sure where Bushcraft Shop gets 2.5 kilos from, I've just weighed mine with the light-weight ally pegs replacing the original steel ones, and it weights 2.6 Kilos. So not exactly light as Martin points out, but we all know he has so much titanium kit that NASA sometimes borrows stuff from him to melt down and make space craft..:jumping-joy:

I'm an old romantic when it comes to lightweight tents. I have a couple of these

This tent is two man but ideal for one. There is plenty of room inside to store your gear and they have a seperate flysheet giving great protection from the elements. I bought my first in the mid eighties when I was around 14 of 15 and you can still pick them up now for about a tenner. Both mine are in excellent condition and the second one I bought is mint. Most of the ones you pick up have usually been stored in peoples lofts for twenty or more years after only being used a couple of times.

I had a little one man adventure on Dartmoor recently and I took my reliable one man Gelert Solo with me.

The tent performed admirably (granted it was blazing sun in the day time and still warm in the evening) but I had bugger all space to 'do' anything in the tent, even sit up. I can still pack my gear outside the inner but under the fly to keep it dry, should it rain, but where as previously just walked, pitched, cooked, kipped then walked again with this tent; on this last adventure I found myself wanting to make camp long before I was ready to just cook and kip and if the weather had not been so glorious, I could have been a bit screwed.

So a lightweight technical two man tent is now at the top of my wish list, one big enough to at least sit up in, if I can find one with a fly that will provide a smidgen of protection when cooking, that would be nice too.

But that is just me, I have been tempted by that style of tent myself in the past and I am sure you can pick them up cheaper than TBS are selling them for.

If my Google Fu is strong, I will post a couple of options for you fella :D

Different people, different routines.. I use the tent purely to sleep in and my light weight poncho hung off a fence/stone wall/ bushes as an admin/cooking shelter that I can sit under. :)

At least I have a bus pass to look forward to when I retire, which the way the goal post are moving will probably be at 85 and only if the country has not gone bankrupt before then.

Things looked so much more rosy when I was a lad and the food tasted better AND the song at the top of the hit parade had proper lyrics and a decent tune, not just beeps, whistles and barely intelligible obscenities, like they have these days... :shocked:

The only thing I don't like about the tent is, I'm 69 years and I sleep in it regularly but there's not enough room for my Bergen and my Zimmer walking frame. So me Zimmer gets wet...http://www.pic4ever.com/images/301.gif ;) ;)

They are pretty heavy and no groundsheet, so that adds to the weight as well !

A tent like this should be no problem in our 'normal' climate and will be even better if it had a good waterproofing or two.

Well it has a 1500 hh rating which theoretically is 500 over recomended for UK ! but another coat or 2 cant hurt

Looks like the Gelert Solo (http://www.gelert.com/products/solo_tent) that made me feel old recently on Dartmoor. These tents are light ish, pack down pretty small and can take more of a battering than the 1500 HH would suggest, but they are very small. I'm just over 5 foot 8 inches and if I lie just so, neither my head nor my feet touch the inner tent. I reckon anyone over 5 foot 10 inches, who likes sleeping flat would not enjoy a good night kip in these kind of tents.

Also, if it rains when you are camped but not ready to sleep, unless you have an additional tarp or poncho with you, you are either going to find yourself stuck in a very small space with nothing much to do or you are going to get wet sitting about in the rain.

But each to there own.

There are several threads on here where I have mentioned happy adventures in my little solo tent, used both on its own and in conjunction with a poncho or tarp for a bit of additional admin shelter and I am sure if I used my trusty little solo more, I'd have many more happy adventures in it. I think the reason I found it a little too snug this time around is, I have been using my hammock a lot more and have just got used to the freedom/space/fresh air feeling you get in a hammock.

But there is no law that says you can only have one tent, so I think I will still start looking (and saving up) for a bigger, lightweight technical tent... so I can get my zimmer in with me out of the rain :D

Like the solo but nearly 1/2 the price, good job there is no law about owning more than one tent, I have about 6, 1-2 man tents, 4 tarps, 5 bigger tents, a caravan and 2 awnings (1 full size & 1 porch)... her indoors dont like it outdoors lol. Its not the length that gets me ( Ime 6' 1" ) its just having no headroom to sit upright and get dressed/ undressed

Thas quite reet lad, there is a lot of them around, and thats great as not too long ago a tech lightweight was all there was and cost a fortune. I think knock off China is the answer, Ive got stoves,cookpots etc that all resemble other makers gear, ATB. Ken

I have bitten the bullet though and ordered a recon tent, it looks like the answer for me as it has enough room for my fat ass, has a little storage and comes in cool woodland camo! I will prob combine it with my small tarp and will let ya know how it goes!:)

Yay, ide like to see that, when I use the 1 man I always take a really lightweight tarp I made from parachute nylon,It folds smaller than a mug and weighs around 150gms and is waterproof. It gives me that bit of extra space and shade, hope your new tent is everything you want. ATB, Ken :camping:

Looks great if small .. We use a 3 man Colman tent for us both its a normal size if you know what I mean but it slits down between two very well for treking and is more comfortable once set up

I wasn't too sure where to put this post but as it involves a piece of kit that has been discussed previously, perhaps this is the correct section.
After the festival of Hlafmas I escaped to the wood, just three nights but it gave me a chance to use and photograph the Mil-Tec one man tent that we spoke about in another post. Usually I carry it just for over night stops when walking on the Downland as it's low profile and small area means it tucks away in the shelter of the gorse bushes easily, out of the wind and squalls which sometimes spring up very quickly from the nearby coast.

To call it a one man 'Tent' is a bit much probably..:D One man sleeping shelter is probably nearer the mark.

I stood my Cold Steel Hawk against it for scale and you can see unless you're a Leprechaun you can't sit up in it even. My Thermarest and sleeping bag fit in with a few inches either end to spare. I'm 5' 10" and it's ok for me..but..if you sleep in a base layer or less and have to take your kit off...you'd better be flexible or get your kit off outside and crawl in..:D. I used it with a small tarp rigged nearby for day shelter/cooking etc:

A bit deceiving that photo, the tarp is only about 5 paces from the 'tent' and could have been closer but the weather was fine and dry so no problem taking a few paces to crash for the night.

The wood is silent as if recovering from the baking hot days that have just passed. Yesterday morning sitting drinking a brew at about 07.00 hrs I suddenly noticed a slight but noticable rain of falling Ash leaves. The wheel has turned..:D
