Just to save me a load of typing, stolen from elsewhere :)

Seems they're running a new reality TV show in the US. The premise is you take two strangers, strip then naked, give them a choice of one item to take with them (usually a knife or machete) and stick them into a jungle or other extreme environment for 21 days to see if they can survive.

Naked and Afraid : Discovery Channel

Episode 1:

Two naked survivalists, Shane Lewis and Kim Shelton, are challenged to survive for 21 days in the Costa Rican jungle. While in the lush rainforest, Shane and Kim endure every challenge imaginable, including torrential downpours, illness, a shelter fire, and a deadly encounter with the venomous snake that put the show's producer in a life-threatening situation.
Episode 2:

Dropped off in the remote and brutally hot African location of Tanzania, two survivalists take on the "endless plains" of the Serengeti to survive for 21 days. They must overcome the challenges of the tough terrain and the dangerous predator-filled environment as they encounter the circle of life right before their eyes. Between navigating the thorny landscape barefoot, suffering from lack of fire, sleep, food, water, and encountering a frightening threat from a pack of hungry hyenas, EJ Snyder and Kellie Nightlinger embark on what will prove to be a very challenging and gruesome 21 days.
Episode 3:

Survivalists Jonathan Klay and Alison Teal are marooned on a Maldivian island for 21 days. The surfer girl and the former Marine clash when sunstroke and starvation threaten their survival as they try to get through 21 days naked and afraid.
Other episodes follow similar lines.

Could this be "Darwin Awards: the TV Show" in the making?

EDIT:- thats pretty good, some good does and donts, some bad knife etiquette, some good ideas got from this for fish traps and other things.

why didnt the guy cut the snakes head off and eat it?? if i was hungry i would not have hesitated to eat the snake, (panama, episode 4) was highly amusing watching him get all scared of a boa worst it'll do is bite you

This was on Discovery last night, did anyone else watch it?

Can't say I was really that impressed, it was ok so I will keep watching to see how the series develops.

Apart from making them uncomfortable (out of their comfort zone), I didn't see why they had to be naked??? Felt just a bit of a gimmick...

Didn't that grotty cable channel run by Kelvin McKenzie have a 'nude darts' league with Page 3 girls as the 'players'?

interesting concept, but surviving in unfamiliar territory is hard, just hill walking in a strange country with unknown plants, animals and insects is a bit daunting - even the climate....fair play to them

this latest episode was not a great one, some of the others showed some great skills episode 2 was pretty good think that was Tanzania, the naked part is something i think they used to draw in an audience, would be better if they didn't opaque the body parts out, i mean its on at 9pm or after dont see the issue really, if eastenders can get away with baby stealing and the likes i'm sure a bit of boob and balls would not hurt any one in a survival based program.

Just watched this today. Looks like they are trying to copy Ed Staffords Tv mini series and cross it with the some of the concept of Manhunter.
So far not massively impressed by the content... Too much about them and their feelings and not enough on the Survival side of things.

Looking through some of the responses above the naked thing appears to be an issue. I don't think it is about the whole comfort zone thing, but more to do with dealing with various exposure types. Also the number of uses for various items of clothing would provide them with a man made advantage. I think the whole concept is to remove as many 'comforts' as possible -rough terrain with no boots, cold nights with no layers, midges/mossies with no physical barrier. It brings a whole new set of issues to deal with. Desert scenearios are going to be interesting as are boreal forestry.

I think I kind of said the same about Ed Staffords show.

O.k. Just got to the end of it.

Biggest comment - the Whole Survival rating thing is a rip off from Manhunter and whoever the so-called experts are that judge them are idiots. The mental attitude of the bloke would have been totally destructive in a larger group dynamic or even if it had been to males, If it had been me judging I would have reduced his score as a direct result, he wasted energy in tantrums and bitching which could have been put to better use. The lass on the other hand took a little longer to adjust to the new environment but very quickly began to adapt her knowledge to her surroundings and showed vast improvements in her abilities.

Once the Shelter and fire were up and running, they seemed to stall in their progression and never really made themselves any more comfortable. With the exeception of the Fish traps I saw little evidence of any camp craft, simple things such as better seating, covered wood store, water collectors, reflector for the fire. I know energy would have played a key part in this, but they had plenty to expend on constantly returning to the river and breaking wood.

Considering they were both supposed to be survivial\bushcraft practioners I was a little disappointed. One thing it did highlight further to me is the massive difference in survival and bushcraft - those that practice survival tend to be a lot more gungho! mentally unstable, impatient and huge risk takers. Those that practice Bushcraft have a stronger mental attitude, more patience and seem to be better at applying the survival\bushcraft skills more effectively as a result. Bear vs Grylls, Cody vs Dave, in all these programs the bushcrafter is nearly the most rational and capable.

I will watch the next one though just to see if it gets any better.

Interesting you mention Grylls, it's always struck me that whilst he was running head-first into a tree or jumping off rocks for no reason whatsoever, a normal person would put up a rudimentary shelter and try to get a fire going.

See, point proven. ;) Haha...
On a serious note though. I think because survival is more about the immediate situation rather than long term thinking it naturally leads to taking slightly more risky decisions. I don't think many people pay enough heed to STOP and certainly don't think about the longer term. Particularly when really isolated. Grylls methods are great when help is only two days away. But fail when help is weeks away. Kind of proven in this show.

Disagree....whilst survival is about effecting rescue as soon as possible there is also the element of forward planning for the 'what if' bits. Bear is to Survival shows what Top Gear is to motoring reviews

I think that was my point in a very round about way. The current belt of tv survivalists are all portrayed in the same way. With the exception of a few.
