Got myself a nice leather drawstring pouch with a buffalo horn closing toggle for less than 3£ on a certain auction website :-)

Have not got a clue what to use it for...but perhaps my fire kit will live in there, and then my spoon knife, whitling knife and opinel can live in my current leather bag as a whitling kit.
Thats an idea that ran trough my head as I sit here. The mora whitling knife and spoon knife is always left behind in the shed...they deserve to come outr and play too :-)

A Litchfield Combat tent

Popped to the recycling centre, and they still had the combat 1 there. Got it home and unwrapped it, and amazingly, everything was present and correct except one of the guys. Even has the original pegs and bags. This one came in the not so fetching brown colour, rather than the desirable green, but it's still better than pink :p.

Fly on the right, pole bag in the middle, and carry bag on the left, with the inner underneath...

http://i1024.photobucket.com/albums/y304/crazysaint22/projects%20and%20equipment/IMG_0814.jpg

Contents of the pole bag, including peg bag, pegs, spacers, cowls, pole feet, guy line, and instructions...

http://i1024.photobucket.com/albums/y304/crazysaint22/projects%20and%20equipment/IMG_0815.jpg

Same price as you paid, £2. Will be getting her set up when I get a spare few minutes, and it stops raining lol.

The combat 2 was my first ever tent

I got bought another one when the original succumbed to the inner tent going mouldy,

I still have the flysheets, I cut the ends off them and use them as stealthy windbreaks / groundsheets.

good find !

I wouldn't have bought it if Neil (Chubbs) hadn't bought his. It was mainly the nostalgic scents, that he referred to, that pushed me in that direction. Although, with this tent, it was more getting all the bits out of the bag, and remembering the good ol' days of ridge tents, before anyone ever cared about "hydrostatic head", or "geodesic" domes :)

Brand new boxed Crossman 1077 Kids/ plinking air rifle. 12g CO2 caplet powered, .177 calibre, 12 shot semi auto magazine fed, weighs 3.4 lbs ish. Also bought a Hawke red dot/reflex sight to go on top, tin of pellets and 10 caplets - £120 for the lot !

Perfect for teaching my lad how to shoot and with a cross bolt safety and magazine loading so in addition to the seven safe handling rules and principles of marksmanship we can even do load/unload, and stoppage drills with him.

gets 40 shots from one caplet shooting about 650/700 fps so an economical way of training before moving up to dads full size rifles :)

Removal of old varnish and subsequent few coatings of tung oil have been expertly carried out and have produced a very nice finish to the beech stock.

Glad you like it Ed :0) You may need to re-oil it from time to time, but it was definitely worth the hassle of getting the varnish/cack off they painted on it, to oil it up and reveal the wood better.. May it bring you many bunnies..

Hi folks, I've just bought an ops tactical vest of evil bay. I know, serves me right, but when you live in wigan and the rain never stops, I got bored... Anyway it was cheap enough at £5.51 plus a £5 p&p. It arrived this morning, and wow what a piece of kit.... The vest its self is fully adjustable and being a rather portly guy I've got it to fit perfect. Theres loads of pouches, and I'm gonna transfere my grab bag stuff into/onto it, and as a bonus I can attach a begen side pouch onto the back when extra room, or additional gear is needed...... And back to the supplier it goes (probably together with the other Rebars we have at the shop). The overall design and materials of this tool is everything you can expect from a Leatherman, but the assembly/craftsmanship leaves a lot to be desired.

Edit: I have just heard from Leatherman; according to them, we must have gotten a bad batch at the store. The tools have now been shipped back to them. I really hope the replacements are a lot better...

Alpkit Gamma (http://www.alpkit.com/gamma) - multifunction LED head torch

5384

I've been after a 'decent' head torch for a while, saw this, liked the look of it and decided to get one. It arrived in the post yesterday and I had an opportunity to try it out in the early hours of this morning, when I decided to go for a nocturnal wander in a little wooded river valley, near where I live.

Here is a little review for your delectation.

This torch has five lights on it, one main light (1W), one small white light, one small red light and one small green light, all on the main front housing (and all 5mm) and one long thin red light on the rear housing (which you pop the batteries into).

The main light is very bright and the field of illumination was quite wide, it illuminated most of the wood when I got there (but it is only a little wood) and there was no danger of me tripping over a wall, tangling my feet in dead fall or falling into the stream. The field of illumination seemed a fair bit greater than what I'm used to with my existing Bushcraftland head torch, which in some scenarios e.g. when you don't want the world and his wife to know what you are up to, may be a bit problematic. But, the main light does have a lower brightness setting (and a strobe setting if you are up for a disco). Or you could opt for the smaller white light which is still quite bright, but the field of illumination is much, much narrower and you are less likely to be mistaken for ET's Mum and Dad parking up to pick up their nipper.

The green light is very handy, same field of illumination as the smaller white light and ideal for looking at a map and being able to read (and erm occasionally ignore) KEEP OUT signs. I also found the green light was a lot less harsh an experience for my eyes, trying to cope with differing lighting conditions.

I was not quite as impressed with the red light. To my eyes, it had the smallest field of illumination. I could make out what it was pointed at, but the detail was not as clear as with the green light. And, the transition between what could be seen and what could not was rather abrupt as opposed to being a bit more gradual with the other lights. But having said all that, it was the least harsh on my eyes.

The red light on the battery housing, which for folks unfamiliar with this bit of kit, sits on the back of your head when you are wearing it, is very nice touch. You can chose between either static or strobe settings, which when you are walking along a dark country road, is not a bad thing at all.

All in all, a cracking bit of kit. I am very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this light to anyone in the market for a new one.

Cheers,

Colin

had mine for 5 years before it broke.... on a per annum basis you cant beat the value for money even without the amount of use I gave it It sounds like you definitely got your money's worth, if mine lasts half as long, I'll not complain.

The main cause of expiration of my many bushcraftland (and similar, slightly more expensive) head torches has been over use in rain.

How did you find this torch coped with wet conditions?

I have a vegetable steamer that looks exactly the same as that fire bowl, except having perforated leaves. It cost me £3.50 from a local store. Still trying to decide whether to use it as a fire bowl, or for it's original purpose.

the workshop will never be big enough! My main workshop is twice the size of any previous ones I've had and I still find myself building extenions on to every side!

also, on the theme of 'just bought', though nt terribly bushcrafty. Today I bought a large compressor and a pneumatic planishing hammer :) I'm sure I'll find something bushcrafty to makw with them ;)

Very true. I have two small sheds and a single garage I'm working out of at the moment, plus the forge outside, under a shelter lol.

I'll be eagerly awaiting the forthcoming products. If you ever get a major failure in the air reservoir, strip the motor out and sell it. You'll get more for an induction motor (especially a big hp one), than you would for a compressor for parts.

Upon discovering that the tool had several small spots of rust, I decided to take it out of the blister pack. Fortunally the rust was only superficial and could be removed with a little Autosol. It's a date code 0403 (april 2003), så really not that collectible, even in packaging. It's a really nice tool btw, I might make it my EDC.

My new FAK arrived. Nice little bag, with not so much content. Came with a couple of bandages, band aids, trinagular bandage, scissors, tweezers etc. Mostly bought it for the pouch. Filled it to bursting with stuff I had laying about,
like my old Norwegian army issue pressure bandage, gaffa tape, super glue, paracetamol, martins bandage, burn cream, sports tape, compeed, wound clossure strips, etc...had all that loose in a pocket in the molle bag...but better organized in a separate pouch that I stuff in that pocket...also small enough to go in a jacket pocket if need be.

Best of all....saved 15£ compared to what a simillar FAK retail for here....with the same dismal content...

I had to do the past 3 months recuperation from hip surgery. I planned during this time to refine my cooking kit to include a method to dry bake bread and generally do a complete revamp to lighten my load. Not that I hike very far at all, in fact most all my adventures involve a boat or canoe. Anyway I read volumes about pots, pans, stoves, etc. Well, I fell in love with almost everyone. I know have at least 5 canister stoves, 2 sterno, 3 wood stoves and at least 10 Alcohol stoves with at least 6 pot stands, not to mention more pots than a well stocked restaurant kitchen. I fall in love with this equipment far too easily. Now it is time to cull the excess. I think the JetBoil, one other canister, 2 alcohol Trangias for long trips and one wood burner for backup will do. I wish it did not cost so much to get a Honey Stove over here. I am trying to get Mikhail at Emberlit to send a 5th side panel and a pentagon cut bottom, maybe if he catches up with back orders he comply.

Some of you have seen that small wooden bowl I have used in some of my videos for a brew, i.e my fish soup.
That one has been phased out as it deveopped a crack from the rim and down. I think it was because it was very thin.

Found the excact same bowl in a charity shop today. paid 1£ for it. Sells for 10 -15£ in normal shops. So happy me. And this one is thicker and has a more sollid feel to it, so it should be able to take my abuse , so a wooden bowl is back in the kit. Now I need a repacement for that cup. It is also cracked...I do not like drinking from metal mugs. They are okay for soup that you use a spoon for, but not for my tea....

Indeed. I went crazy with my Vango Pumori 60+10 and just shoved everything I could inside incase I needed it. I have definitely learned my lesson though and intend to pack much lighter this time which is why I opted to go with a smaller and lighter pack.

Not a fan of huge knives but that is great!! What do you think jakob, special forces issue? Its got some lovely design detail in it. Paul

If it has remains of bluing/blackening on the blade, it is most likely a military issue, designed for Hærens Jegerkommando, but bought by many other members of the Norwegian armed forces.

A civillian version without bluing/blackening does also exist.

FishyFolk
10-10-2012, 02:44 PM
That is a Knivsmed Strømeng Leuku, but I doubt that it is an Army model. The Amred forces only started to purchase the knives for issue around 1995, and those where all of the 8" blade model with a fixed finger-guard.

They did however make a model with 9" blade and a hinged finger guard, that where sold to millitary personell at the Army PX in the barracks to soldiers at a reduced price. But that is more than 20 years ago. And the special forces where issued some of these. But they where not made as an army knife.
The knife may have been owned by a soldier, even a member of the FSK (Forsvarets Spesial Kommando = Army Special Command). The Special forces use a lot of "off the shelf" kit, so it could have been issued to him, but it's more likely that it was a private purchase.

Also Kosovo started in 1999 and by then the 8" blade with a fixed finger guard was standard issue in the special forces and the Border guards on the Russian border, and the Brigade North. I was also in Kosovo at that time I we where not issued a Leuku...everyone that had one had brought their own. I carried a Classic USMC ka-Bar...but then my batallion was trained in the south..

But back before '95 a leuku was something the soldier bought himself.

Else a Leuku with a finger guard is sort of a joke up here in the North. We call it a "southern guard" i.e only southerners need one...since they cant handle a knife :-)

Fällkniven DC4 http://www.fallkniven.com/en/shop/details/369/13/sharpeners/dc4 - bought one from Ray Mears last year, used it a lot, but lost it somewhere.

I almost never loose my gear really - I must have bad luck with Fällkniven. Time will tell :)

If you need any lead to melt down. Try your local glass company. If they use the stick on lead strip to make lead effect windows, they will have loads of little off cuts which they will have to send for recycling. If anyone came to us, asking for a few hand fulls, we'd have no hesitation in letting them have some.

Biltema Firesteel; http://www.biltema.dk/da/Fritid/Haven/Grill/Tilbehor/Tandstal-45509/ - just to test it out. It is actually not at bad firesteel at all; it is softer than a LMF, which means it will wear faster - but it also makes it throw larger sparks more easily. Like litteratly all cheap firesteels I have handled, the rod pops out of the handle very easily. The striker is really nice; it works very effectively as a striker, it has a ruler (cm) on each side and a bottle opener. What I like most though are the instructions on the package, they are very thorough and clearly written by someone who has outdoor expereince.

Was out and had picked up a new Mora 911 carbon steel for 4£, some soldering tin and a few other bits and pieces. Stand in a looooong line with someone in training to pay. Arrive at the cashier, can't find my atm card. Think it's in the car, go look. Nope.
Drive home, turn the house upside down looking for it. Calls the bank to cancel it. And as I hang up I realise that the card is in another pocket in the jacket I am still wearing. Says a few choice words, calls the bank, and they gladly open up my card again, only it takes 24 hours...meanwhile I have the kitchen table full of stuff that needs soldering, and I can't go back to the shop to pick up my soldering tin. The car is almost out of gasoline, and I have to pick up the wife in 2 hours...

So what the f....did I do to deserve this today?

Hi martin'
I will keep you informed but probably won't get the chance to use it until spring, but I don't think I'll venture out of the tent in it in case I get shot as a sasquatch emerging from hibernation. Seriously though it should be plenty warm enough because there is very little free space.

I love the concept of these and would be very interested to find out how it fares on a cold, damp night in North Wales. Please keep us posted or put a separate review up, of your purchase.

Hi All,
I have just bought a Musuc sleeping bag on a whim because I don't like being trapped in a mummy bag and can't always find a tree for my hammock. Bought from Germany arrived in two days and not expensive compared to other sleeping bags. However when it arrived I duly unpacked it and donned my new purchase "you look like a demented telly tubby or something from Dr Who" my wife's comment. you can seet it here. :ashamed: http://www.musucbag.com

Hammock, underquilt and a musucbag?

Could this be the holy trinity of winter tree dwelling?

Well you would need a tarp too, but you see what I am getting at.

I look forward to your review with great interest :D

Brand new Canadian army cold weather shirt (90% wool, my second one like this, found in thrift store by accident a few weeks ago), brand new (for 1963) west German army 100% wool pants, just showed up today, looks like I ordered too long, so will order a second pair because the price is decent and they have lots of sizes. AND, a few weeks ago too I bought a low cost/high quality new oilskin ranch jacket, wool lined, for $50. They didn't have medium, so I bought large, is broad in the shoulders for me, but that means more extra airspace to hold warm air and make me feel less restricted when I add layers in the winter. Brains over style. Lol

Here are the pants I bought (at the place I bought them from, $16 shipping brought them to the door)

Here are two outdoor reviews of them:

And here's a rough pic of my first shirt, second is identical (and have a smaller third one at work, only 70% wool though)

And here's the link to the oilskin jacket I bought, can't share the picture, and don't have a pic of my own yet.

I think I may have to order me some wool pants! Those look very nice, Mike. Sharon found me a pair very similar at the charity shop, and thankfully this year the forecast calls
for a cold week for deer hunting next week, so the deer will be on the move and more importantly, I can try out my wool goodies....

Highly recommended Jack, they are solid pants, well made, brand new, reinforced stitching, annoying suspender buttons...... lol. Oh, only noticed this morning, the wool is a blend of brown and green fibers. Kinda neat. ;)

Would love to see your knives Jakob! In the short time I've been on the forum, I've read about your purchase of several. How many do you have? :D

I have just ordered a Bow Stave with all the bits as I want to try and make my own Longbow a bit like the one I made at the R.V. from Hazel :)

Not purchased very recently but some new items to me are a full tang knife and a skandi neck knife that I will try to get some pictures of.
Also bought an Alpkit Bivy bag after selling my issue bivy.

Cheers, Ben.
