Just received my new Tatonka Tarp 2 TC from Peglers. £60 with free P&P, which is £20 cheaper than everywhere else at the moment.
The site states 3-5 working days, but i got mine within 2, so great stuff.
HERE (http://www.peglers.co.uk/tatonka-tarp-2-tc/), is their listing for the tarp. Maybe it will come in handy for others.

I nearly bought one of these in Maplin the other day. They were selling them for £4.99 (about half usual price). Decided against it though, as the angle didn't seem like it could be changed, and I rarely need to sharpen my kitchen knives for some reason.

I have bought this one for my son as he is desperate to get out with his old man. I was looking at just getting another DD as I have been impressed with mine to date, but I had the lad looking through the sites stored on my favourites list and he liked the look of this one. Must admit, had I known about this one before I bought my DD I may well have got this one instead. I like the way that the end panels are material rather than mesh and may help to minimise cold draughts coming through. He has no idea that I have actually bought it yet as its going to be a Christmas present.
I was after another tarp that will pack smaller than the DD 3x3 hence the purchase on that one and hopefully another is on its way for junior to use. Will post initial impressions on that one but I can already see a couple of mods that will need doing to get it the way I like to use the DD.
May be lucky and get it all the post tomorrow so when I have had a chance to look over the hammock I will give my first impressions on that aswell but won't be able to give it a good going over until he has opened it up on Christmas Day. I know he is going to want to set it up straight away so its just as well I have put some eye bolts in the outhouse for playing with my hammock setup.
I will have to make him an underquilt next...
Adam Savage
14-11-2012, 08:19 PM
Awesome. I bet he's going to be chuffed to bits with that :)
Used to use a Tenth Wonder compact hammock myself, which was a great bit of kit, just a little on the small side for me. Their kit isn't lacking in the quality stakes.
I've found it's very hard to find a tarp that packs down smaller than the DD 3x3, and still give the same sort of coverage. I can squeeze mine into a canteen pouch :D
Also just trial fitted my homemade underquilt, but I shall post that in the "daily bushcraft" thread ;)

My TW 3 x 3 does....
How long have you had that? I know the DD is pretty thin stuff, and after a year or so of use, starts to show signs of stretching at the stitching, where you can see tiny, tiny bits of daylight through. If the TW is more resistant to that, it would be well worth replacing my DD with one when it's totally worn out. I recently bought a Tatonka polycotton (technical cotton) tarp, which is really, really tough, but it weighs in at just over a kilo and packs down to the size of the British army bivvi bag (so not as small as the DD and TW).

Yes, you're right. That's really a powerfull price. But I've never read something bad about it from the other nx-250 owners. All of them said, that it is really comfortable and that they love this hammock. And that were all people from a hammock forum, so I think that they already have tested different types of hammocks =)
Well I think I could do a review, but as I said before, that's my first hammock. So I don't know if that would give you all the information, you want about it...
But you could tell me, which information you want to know, and I will do my best ;)
I think the hammock will arrive whithin the next 3 or 4 days.
If you want to, you can take a look at the product-video from clark, about the nx-250 (if you have not done this yet). They tell all the features of the hammock =)

The petrol lighters have Zippo printed on them but they are deffo not Zippo made !!. Even so, they are not bad at all, they seem better made than the other lasting match I have and they screw down really tight.
The moneyminder keyring are great for a pound. Enough space in them for a few notes, your meds or even personal info for when out in the bush.

Be careful with the SMK springers. Some of them come out of the factory over the legal limit (due to variation in manufacturing). Getting caught by the old bill in a public place with one, runs the risk of a 6 year prison sentence and a hefty fine :(.
Also, I'm sure you know about hunting and needing landowners permission, etc, but you also need to convince the fuzz (should they turn up) that you are controlling a rabbit/squirrel problem. If you say you're just hunting to eat them, you might find yourself in trouble lol.

Sounds good bud. They are cracking rifles for the price. They do the same job as a lot of more expensive makes.
Another tip that many people don't realise, is try and stick to real lead pellets, rather than those lead free ones some companies make. It's kinder to the rifling on the barrel. Also only clean the bore on it if it's stored for extended periods of time, or it gets planted in the mud/dirt. The tiny bit of lead build up in the barrel helps to lubricate the pellet on it's way, again preserving the life of the rifling :)

Why am I never lucky like that?... But, saying that, Off for a wander around Ladybower 6 weeks ago, I lost a mapcase, map, compass, and walk guide... Neer thought I'd see 'em again... A bloke found them, did some looking on the net at various forums, saw my appeal on the Edale MRT page of facebook, and got in touch..
All now safely back home, and one happy chappy to boot. :)

These arrived over the weekend and were waiting for me in the office this morning, excellent little things, and since I ordered them direct from the makers, rather than through Ray Mears store, they threw in a sample of the smaller ones for me. I'll aim to try them out at the weekend, but I've just put one of the smaller ones onto my sons camping rucksack that he's storing in the office, and it supports lifting the full 45l rucksack on it with no slipping or damage to the material.

Tatonka H2O Pot (http://www.tamarackoutdoors.co.uk/PBSCProduct.asp?ItmID=9154200). Ordered the 1L Teapot, but they sent an email saying they won't have those back in stock until April, so sent the H2O and partial refund.
Karrimor Fur Snow Boots (http://www.sportsdirect.com/karrimor-fur-snow-boots-mens-143031?colcode=14303105), for those colder winter camps.
Decided I needed a stainless kettle, so decided to get a Tatonka teapot. As mentioned above though, they were out of stock, so opted for the H2O as a replacement. Hoping it will be better suited to open fire than the Trangia kettle I have, or the Tesco kettles (which have lasted well so far, but starting to get that powdery finish on the inside :().
Needed the boots, as I only have walking boots and neoprene wellies. Neither are particularly warm in this frosty weather :)
The Tatonka H2O pot is a real gem! I used to have one with my Tatonka stainless multi set (stainless Trangia clone). If you are careful, you can use the kettle as a pan for cooking as well.

Got an Eagle products wok for use over a camp fire as a Yule present for my dad. And I happen to know that he has upheld the agreement that he would get me an Eagle products frying pan
for me (it's a tradition between me and him since I started making my own money. That way we always get at least one present we want, as opposed to all the socks, ties and cheap after shaves).
That frying pan has a collapsible handle for easy stuffing into a pack. And the handle is designed so that you can lenghten it by inserting a stick into it. Nice when cooking over a hot fire.
Also it's non-stick and the Non stickiness is suposed to be pretty good on those, i.e not easy to scratch, provided you use wood or plastic spatulas only...
Also both come with a storage bag so you don't habve to get sooth all over your other gear when stowing it away.
Only problem is that now I wan't the wok also...it would be perfect for Sautéed reindeer or whale in a hunters stew :-)

Quite :) I had been wanting one for quite a while, but I vowed not to buy one, before I was fully adept at sharpening and maintaining a blade on a proper bench stone at home and with a smaller ceramic/diamond stone in the field. The Lansky sets are very convenient and very easy to use, but too heavy to drag around in the field.
@JEEP: Now you are only missing the ultra fine blue sapphire stone! :o Then the kit is complete! Lansky kicks butt!
I might go for one of these, though I find that the 1000 grit ceramic stone in the set is fine enough for my needs. I may, however, exchange some of the stones with diamond stones (which costs silly money!), once they wear out.

Imho they are far to aggressive and are only of use for those hightec powder-metallurgic steels beyond 63-64 rockwell. For the standard Carbonsteel the basic lansky with a decent strop will do all the magic.

What brand battery are you using in it? Some of the cheaper brand (even named one, like Panasonic) can't provide high power continuously. It might be the driver circuit picking up on the power drop, and switching modes to conserve power.
It might not make any difference, but it's worth a try :)

A few weeks back I bought one of those small Grandslam Pen rods, I sometimes take my youngest g/daughter (4yrs) fishing with me so I was thinking something smaller for her. I tried it over a week ago and had quite a few small roach on it, I reckon it could handle a few pounds. Today I bought a walker's notebook (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Walkers-Notebook-Alfred-Wainwright/dp/071122823X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1356369833&sr=1-1), looks okay to me.

Just been having a look at those, 18lb carp landed on one they reckon.
Where did you buy from?
Ebay, Rich, it really is sound, I'll be having another go after the Xmas is finished, gonna try for a pike on the canal, I reckon it'll be good for them too. Ideal for for trout in streams, beats the hobo reels hands down in my book.

Not exactly bushcraft, but being Norwegian, we open the prezzies on the eve of the 24th, and in the pile of loot there was a nice Eagle products frying pan witrh a collapsible handle that you can insert a stick to extend it when using over a camp fire, that one from my dad. And from my youngest step son, a small pocket water stone to restore a blade in the field.
Else it was just the usual junk :-)
I changed the 4lb line to a decent 3lb line, the reel is okay, does a job but don't expect a Shimano, easily fits in a pocket and I've seen a lot worse reels.

Well, I had a totally abortive trip to Go Outdoors in Leeds today. I'd ordered the Phantom 55l rucksack online because it was slightly larger than the 45l I currently use, and had the hydration pocket which was the main aspect I wanted, and was only £20 in the sale with their discount card (which i have).
Got rung by the store just before heading to the in-laws for second xmas meal of the season and was told the 55l was out of stock (yet their stock checker online let me order it... go figure... and still shows it as in stock...) and they'd do me the next model up for the same price. Wife drove me to the store to pick it up, got there to find they'd 'upgraded' me to a totally different model of bag with no hydration pocket, so no use. Store manager had to be got involved to get a refund sorted, and he asked if I was fussed about colour, because he had a pink womens vango sherpa 65l with hydration pocket on offer I could buy instead. It was just over £27 (shows as £48 online). Asked him what he'd knock off for all the trouble and I was told it was below cost already and he couldn't knock anything off.
Given I'd also gone to get the dried food packets to try them out and they didn't have some of the flavours shown online in the Adventure Food series, or any of the Reiters series, I was seriously pee'd off with the managers attitude, so got my refund and walked out. The thing is, even if he'd only knocked the vango rucksack down to £25 i'd have taken it, but it was the principle of it, we'd had to travel there to pick up a duff product and the guy was being uncooperative.
Given how little equipment I still need to buy for my walking trip, I doubt i'll be spending much more money with them next year.

Thanks for the comments about food. When I used to carry a coleman F1 stove and pans, I used the wayfarer food packets, and found them really good. One of the things I'm wanting to do while walking is cut the weight down as much as possible, ideally if I can get rid of the esbit stove and billy cans I carry now and just rely on the mKettle and rehydratable food i'd be happy. Plus i've had fairly poor results using the wayfarer packets with the billy cans, the water doesn't seem to circulate enough to heat the packet through.
I take mugshots pasta and couscous packets with me at the moment for snacks, they are quick and easy to do and taste fairly good, but I don't think they'd be enough on for a morning or evening meal.

Best thing to do there BG is take out the packet move the contents around inside the bag then pop it back into the water, also make sure you shake the contents down to the bottom of the pouch so its fully immersed

I have used the Adventure Food dehydrated meals as I wanted something a bit lighter than the reheat style meals. The first one I tried was absolutely vile but can't remember the recipe (!) but the others have been great. The Goulash and Hotpots are rather nice and the puds are not bad either. I will certainly be using them when out across the moors with the Scouts.

After the nightmare of Go Outdoors, and no local stores and a limited selection of online stores selling the Reiter or Adventure Food packets, I stumbled across www.fuizionfreezedriedfood.com and have just ordered a breakfast and pasta meal from them to try. They look to be about £2 more expensive per meal, but the food looks like real food when rehydrated.

I bought THIS (http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/hi-gear-backpack-2-camping-pans-p142522) yesterday and made a brew with it whilst on my walk. I thought it was pretty good. The problem of having to wait for the pot to cool down before you can drink is gone as I boiled the water in one pot and transferred into the other to make the brew. I thought the anodising might burn off but it didn't seem to show any signs of discolouring, yet. I reckon I could fry a full breakfast in the two lids.
It was a toss up between this and a £40 odd single Ti model.
