View Full Version : What Have You Bought Now!!!???
A piece of rip stop nylon to make a hammock style seat to throw in my day sack. I have either a very steep learning curve to overcome with the sewing machine or a suitably tempting bribe may work. :innocent: ( just need to organise the tree huggers)

Hi Bri.
Thanks for the advice buddy, actually the sewing awl was bought for me about a year ago and I've never got round to using it. I've been watching a ton of videos on saddle stitching so that's the way I'm gonna go i think.
As you've said, I have read somewhere that the awl weakens the leather but I'm unsure as to why. The needle on the awl is the same width as the leather working needles that I bought.
Ade.

Got SWMBO to drive me to my local surplus shop the other day, so I could hobble around on the sniff for a bargain and picked up a pair of British Army softie revesible thermal trousers for a fiver.
With the today's light dusting of snow down here on the foot of the country and the cooler weather, I thought I would give them a go.
I did feel like (and probably looked like) a bit of a numpty, doing my best impression of a hobbling MC Hammer, but by jove they are toasty T^
Chubbs
21-01-2013, 11:05 PM
Did you pick them up in Camborne mate.
I bought the same a few weeks ago, bargain for the price.
When I tried them on in front of the missus she said I looked like MC Hammer !!. They will be great for wearing in the hammock.
Kernowek Scouser
21-01-2013, 11:23 PM
Yeah fella, the Camborne Army surplus shop is keeping me going, until Bushcraftland starts doing useful stuff again.
They would definitely keep you warm in a hammock, when I'm a bit more mobile, I'll give that a go.
Did he have any of the jackets in when you got yours? He didn't have any left when I got mine, but reckons he'll be getting some in, in the next couple of weeks.
If I do get one it will mean I'll be stumbling around St Ives looking like the Stay Puffed Marshmallow Man and getting even funnier looks than I got today, but so long as I'm warm when it is brass monkey weather, I will not care :D

No jackets left when I was in mate. I will pop in next week and see if he has any. Did you see the hexi burners including tablets for three quid. I picked up one of those and another pair of the thick boot socks out of the pound basket.
Even though they are no fashion statement, they do the job for a fiver.
Kernowek Scouser
21-01-2013, 11:48 PM
Deffo a bargain.
Yeah, those hexi burners he does are a good bit of kit, I like the little top stand they come with, making a brew with them is a lot less hassle.
And, when he has them, I usually pick up a couple of packs of purification tablets, at £1.99 for 50 it would be rude not to :D

suspenders were originally made for men and still are and I don't mean braces - suspenders were made to hold up male hosiery or long socks, the like of Henry viii would have used them but they would now
be called Garters, modern male suspenders are still popular but now fit around the calf and not the thigh - remember Eric Morecambe - he used them.
why do I get the feeling that I have just dug a rather large hole for my self!!

Where can you get a good value (read cheap) insulated, water resistant jacket?
This is a question I have been pondering for quite a while now, as after two year of faithful service, my waterproof shell now repels water as effectively as kitchen roll (and it has a big rip from the shoulder to the elbow, following my resent cliff diving experience, which does not help).
As I do a lot of walking, I had resigned myself to parting with several tens of pounds, to get a good jacket, that could take whatever the elements chose to throw at it and would last a couple of years.
Then I happened upon the jacket (http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?655-What-Have-You-Bought-Now!!!&p=68590&viewfull=1#post68590) dannyreid1978 posted a page back and like him thought :D Bargain :D and was about to get my debit card out, but then thought 'I'll have one last look, before I jump' and found upon this.

Which all sounded very good, but for a little over £20 all in, was this a little too good to be true?
I decided to find out and had a punt.
Ordered last Monday arrived on Thursday, which considering it was coming from NI via a snow blocked SW was not bad at all.
It was pretty cold down her on Thursday, so I got a chance to see how warm this jacket was on my daily hobble around the town. This jacket did keep me nice and toasty, which was good.
Friday was very cold too and also very wet. Struggled into my storm pants, coat on, hobbled out and spent a good couple of hours thanking people for offering me a lift home, but declining as I was happily bimbling about in the rain. The jacket kept me both warm and dry, which was better.
It was wet and windy again yesterday. I was out again yesterday and I was warm and dry again yesterday :D
Contrary to opinion, I am not against investing serious money on high end clothing or kit. But I will always, keep my eyes peeled for a bargain that does an equally good job and when I find such a bargain, share it with folks who may also appreciate it.
Now I have only had this coat a couple of days, so I have no idea if it will still be keeping me warm and dry in a years time like my old one did. But my first impressions and initially testing, in particularly cold and wet conditions, suggest to me this coat it going to be a winner and on that basis, I happily recommend it to the groupT^
As always, I am in no way associated with either the manufacturer or retailer of this product, just a happy customer.

A small Molle backpack from Evilbay yet again. It will probably prove to be to small, but my molle shoulderbag is sometimes to small to get every item I'd like to bring. To bad as I love it to bits, and it was an attempt to limit what i could possibly drag out in the muck with me. So that small molle bag should be just the thing for when I need a tarp, or an extra set of clothes, or when the runt is coming too and need his hammock and "Bamse", his teddy bear :-)
My current love affair with molle kit is getting expensive

I just bought one very similar. only difference i can see is mine doesn't have the top strap.
i went for the 40 liter, plenty of room for any extra's and my thinking is space weighs nothing.
have to say it's really well made and a nice bit of kit, well worth the £28

This one is only 20 litres i think. I think it will make an okay job of replacing my shoulder bag in winter. Basically to carry a fleece sweater, and some more food. Plus I can't ski with a shoulder bag. Need the double straps. I have got another 40 litre backpack I can use if I need more stuff. And I 60 litre one as well.
On the lookout for an 80-100 litre bergan now. As cheap as i can find it. May go for a surplus UK army one, as I can't find any Norwegian ones out for sale at the moment.

I can find something here for the same prices. Actually allready have. i just don't need it yet.
The problem is that once something cost more than 20£ including shipping, I get slapped with 25% VAT on the combined value of the goods and shipping costs + a 17£ customs fee.
So some stuff is not very cost effective to order from over seas, even if cheaper there.
And I am willing to bet that a full sized bergan will be stopped by our finest in the his Majesty's Customs Service...

ah ok was just a thought.
i found something sent as a 'gift' is not eligible to customs fee,as for customs ive imported alsorts including knives and never had a problem.
but if you can sort it your end then no worries

69786979698069816982 just a few pics of the rucksack I posted earlier .
It has dyneema sides and weighs 1.5 kg but can be stripped down to 740grms by taking the lid and belt off.
Really good fit for me I can hardly feel it on my shoulders and can feel the weight on my hips only when walking.
I dont know about its longevity yet but it seems really well made and strong ,time will tell I suppose.

A 12cm single egg frying pan. When we had the meet down here in Cornwall one of the guys had one and I thought it was a great idea. I bought this for £1.04 plus p&p from Ebay and it is a great piece of kit for your day pack. I tried it out using the Crusader cooker fueled by meths on stove rope in a tin and it worked perfectly. It is non stick and you can buy the same for a 'Buy It Now' price here
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Colourworks-12cm-mini-non-stick-frypan-blini-pan-with-soft-grip-handles-/260947314052?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Kitchen_Cookware_GL&var=&hash=item3cc1ac0584
I took the hard plastic handle off my 'pink !!' one and it leaves a safer metal one attatched to the pan. I have kept the handle so I can stick a metal wallpaper scraper between it, sharpen it up and then I will be left with a spare knife.

£17 for 5L thats £3.40 per L......as for the other item on that page thats only half a litre, I got quarter of a litre more(3/4 of a litre) factor in £4 for a discount card and the 24 miles round trip to my nearest store and it soon becomes more expensive.

I think a lot of people did before CH was commonplace in the 70's, we did. My mate refuses to use the CH in his house as a protest to the rising fuel costs so he uses two or three calor gas heaters spread about his house. I think there's about 75% of the population living in fuel poverty at the moment. But I digress and get political whilst doing so, so I'll stop.

Sometimes it's a chore living this far north. My DD tarp and underblanket shipped from Paisley, UK on Wednesday, and arrived in Oslo on Friday morning, via Jarrow - UK, Charles de Gaulle airport in France, and Holland. And ther eit sat until this afternoion, when it got shipped on. Planned arrival....Thursday.
The thing is, it does not matter who the sender uses. Fedex, UPS, TNT, etc. on arrival in Norway they all hand it over to the Norwegian post system...who will pass it on, send it back, query, lose it, find it, subject it to public inquiry, lose it again , and finally bury it in soft peat for three months and recycle it as firelighters!
Seriously Posten, retire your donkey carts. Both the automobile and the Aeroplane has been in existence for more than a hundred years now!
Same story for the hammock itself. Brought at great speed by UPS to Oslo, and then Norwegian "Posten" got their sticky hands on it.
AAAAARGH!

Two foldable poles for the bug net on the DD Frontline Hammock. £3.00 + £1.50 P+P. I have the older 2011 Frontline with green net and have sewn the outer ends of the outer loops on the bug net. I can now fit the poles through the loops on each end of the net (the stitching stops the poles sliding about, though they are still removable for packing away) this updates the bug net to the 2012 black net version.

Interesting. I bought my Frontline of my mate joe (i think its a 2011) and he had made his own spreaser bars from alloy plumbing fittings, which he gave me when I bought it

i want to have a go at making the 'bread on a stick' i think its called bannoc
does anyone know of a trusted recipe i could try?
butchthedog
13-02-2013, 03:53 PM
I have only tried making it once "but not on the stick method" I used a basic recipe and added raisins. I made the mistake of making it too thick and was not cooked right through, the bit around the outside was nice enough but the middle was raw dough. Try it on the stick and not too thick, above all enjoy it. Recipes are easy to find just Google it or find some on here.

I got a pair of softie trousers the other week too and when my little lady saw me in them she said "You look like MC Hammer" which made her chuckle.
Then later on when she was watching TV, an advert came on featuring a little rotund fella, in balloon pants dancing about to 'Hammer time'
"That's you that is!" she announced with glee and since then, whenever it has been a bit bass monkey weather outside, she's been asking me "is it hammer time yet?"
I will have my revenge yet...

Never really thought about wearing as outers, I had sleep kit in mind when buying them. Will go nice with my Xero 350 and heat holder socks on cold/Winter nights :)

Now go and hang that thing where it belongs....over a camp fire :-)
If you thread a stick trough the metal "d-rings" on the side and trough the "d-ring" on the lid, it will hold the lid in place so it does not rattle in you back pack.
Also those D-rings will hold the handles down when you pack it away to prevent them from rattling. And third. You can use thiose D-rings to tie it to the outside of your pack to prevent the insides from beeing sooted up from the kettle. But you got the stuff sack for that too.

They'll make a permanent job, I can imagine, rightly or wrongly, that the screw clamps from electrical "chocolate blocks" could work loose after being heated and cooled over fires numerous times, but maybe that's the pessimist in me. :confused2:

I'd normally say "Don't fix it if it aint broke" but I can recommend crimps for their strength, I use them to make wire traces for Pike fishing.

The crimps I personally use are THESE (http://www.dlstshop.co.uk/shop/article_33/DLST-Trace-Crimps.html?sessid=XRvikWlyc7YxzwrHhEQOrBGkWos9LEa N899dMtbhaBE4HuUDxAnm4sgHF15XVNSz&shop_param=cid%3D42%26aid%3D33%26) but they'd be too slim for a double thickness of clutch/brake cable, but you get the idea. 100 for £2.50.
You'd need double barrelled crimps which are slightly more expensive.
Having said that all that, I think it's all academic anyway, for the amount of times that you're going to mod' a cup or pot, the cost is going to be cheap enough whichever method you use. Like I nearly said, not broke, don't fix ;)

Set a task during a recent Survival Training Course to see how many useful items you
could fill it with for a survival situation. Each item has to be of a size suitable for extraction
with ease & won't damage the bottle in doing so
