lol, Indeed, many a time I have made a drunken purchase. Thankfully most of not regretted it and its a good surprise if you don't remember/realize until it arrives :D

Someone on here and I can't remember who, had a Sainsbury's version which may have had fire retardants inbuilt and was struggling to get them to burn, no such problem with Animal Dreams. just a small amount of cotton wool and vaseline. could probably use hexamine (I'll try that next trip out)
It was me. I've got them to burn in the Frontier stove, but not in anything else, and even then, i've had to have the stove going for a while and up to heat before the sainsburys ones will burn, and even then, they don't burn too well.

When it finally blooms, the flame is disappointingly low compared to the numerous pop-can stoves I've made. The blue "bloom" struggles to reach 10mm higher than the jets, is this normal for a Trangia?? or should I be taking it back tomorrow??

Before you take it back, try it a few more times.

You don't say whether the one you bought was new or not but I had the same problem with one bought as new, but years old. The original Trangia ones which are slightly larger than the newer ones are at least 40 years old army surplus.

After a few goes mine was fine.

Use it again but prime it first, pop-can stoves are thin compared to the robust trangia and absorb heat quickly to boil the meths giving a higher bloom whereas the thicker brass and bigger area
of the trangia needs to be primed to achieve the same results, the last time I used mine was on the 29 may sunny but cool and it was a pain to light but once primed it worked well.

I have acquired a tactical waist pack, it is like a snugpac response pack, but bigger (it think). No name on it, so I am trying to identify it through pictures, but it has a main compartment and front compartment, two side compartments, a waist strap, a carry strap and more MOLLE attachment points, all over the place, than I know what to do with.

Fill the burner with the amount you need, splash a bit of meths into the priming pan and light this carefully - as the brass warms up the meths starts to boil and the jets self ignite.

The last one shows it going full blast with a flame around 6 inches high remember this was done indoors at 8 45 pm tonight, you may get different

Bought a hexa-fuel burner. They are as awfull as I rember them to be. But packs down small so it will come when I only have my canteen cup to warm up a brew on. The fuel tablets that came with it proved to be fire proof. Had to build a small fire on top of them with birch bark to make them ignite...and then they burned out before my 3 dl of water was boiling. And I was using the recomened 2 tablets...

Well well, next time I may just use one, and burn som twigs in there to make my brew....

It does seem to be a pretty well made bag and when you think about it, the proper maxpedition packs are probably made in China too, so there is no reason why this pack would not be of a similar quality, is there? And like you say you can get a fair bit of gear in one of these (not so) little shoulder packs. I have a sneaky feeling this new pack may become my preferred bimble bag this summer.

I was mooching around my local surplus shop the other day and I broke my 'no cammo' rule as he had a very good condition desert dpm windproof smock going for a tenner.

Not too heavy, but it certainly keeps the hill winds at bay, lots of pockets which I like and I don't feel like a numpty wearing it. But I am toying with the idea of dying it for use now and possibly waterproofing it for when the rains return.

The first job I got when I moved down here was driving busses. Some soft bumpkin used to get on wearing DPM (ironed) every day until one day he got on with a maroon beret on his bloody head (not shaped) complete with capbadge! Matey says to me "can I have a return to Totnes?"

I said "When you earned that beret was it in a previous lifetime and would you like to become Airborne in the next thirty seconds?"

The stamp matches my Buscraft Tattoo as featured in another thread somewhere on NB.

To say I'm happy is a HUGE understatement.

Any who I was after a gb small forest axe but at £70 (show price) they were to expensive. When he said £50 I had to snap off his hand :)

I have an issued 4 person one......Cant count on hands and feet the number of people warmed up in a bothy/KISU or as we called them Clan Tents. One of the first things to do following our primary survey in a mountain/outdoor first aid situation - protection from the elements (unless its 25 deg C though ) Not just a survival item but ideal for lunch stops, and because of their obvious clour a great way to highlight your position...although it must be remembered that the big yellow budgie will blow it away if you arent careful.

Both have a nice ring to them, but the bickern looking one of the two (one on the right) , has a grain patternation of forged iron.
The other looks similar to some armourers stakes I have seen. Maybe Dave Budd could help shed some light on them?

My purpose for them is to go with my portable forge setup, so I can demonstrate and give people a go when at meets. Probably simple things like steel flint strikers, but possibly the odd knife blade :)

There are denglestocks, which are used for that purpose. They are much smaller though, and have a convex top to allow for a thinner edge to be achieved. They drive into a stump/log/fence post the same though. They also don't have a bick on them, as they are not intended for shaping as such. Little more than a splitting wedge really, that has been modified so it doesn't split :)

One thing you might find with this kind of tripod is its lighter weight, can result in less stability.

Not a problem if you are making home movies (with her) indoors, but if you are out and about in a fair wind, you could spend half your time righting it when it gets blown over (more pro tripods tend to be rather heavy and have spreaders to offset such inconveniences).

A nifty, bushcrafty solution should you encounter tipping is - your water bottle, the nearer a litre the better and a bit of para cord.

Simply suspend the water bottle beneath the central post with the para cord and baring a force ten gale, you will find the tripod is a lot more stable. You just need to play around with the length to minimise the likelihood of the water bottle banging into the the tripod legs. If you haven't got a water bottle with you, a bag packed tight with earth, stones etc. would do, as would a billy can stuffed tight (to avoid rattling being picked up by the mic). Basically, you just need to hang something with a bit of weight of the central post, that will make little or no noise and not bang into the tripod legs.

I used to do the same thing with my lightweight pod. A ziplock bag in the camera pouch, and fill it with soil or stones, pop it inside the camera pouch again, and hang the pouch under the pod with it's own strap :)

A very cheap "own brand" 3 season sleeping bag I found at the supermarket. Looked it over and it does not appear to me total manure. I guess the zippers are going to prove to be the weak point...

Some of the supermarket sleeping bags are surprisingly good. Like you say though, the zip is often the weak point. Easily jammed on the trim pieces, or pulled off of the teeth. As long as you're gentle with them, they can last a good while :)

Had a bit of business up Camborne way this afternoon, popped my head in the surplus shop when it started to rain and took a fancy to UBACS shirt (in desert camo). As he had two that fit me, I got 'em both and had enough change from a tenner for a bacon butty from the cafe over the way :D

I have mentioned before, I am not a fan of camo, but if the sun returns this year (looking at the weather today, I'd say it's 50/50) with a bit of black dye and possibly a couple of zips added above the elbows, I reckon these could be an ideal top to wear with my pack and increasingly elaborate chest rig/civvy webbing.

I think re-handling is definitely one thing to try, the tang on the 911 is quite stubby so be worth a practice! The sheath is slightly deeper and chunkier so I'll look at modding one to attach a ferro rod and stuff to it. Other than that any suggestions?

You could try doing a sheath pack, eg. wrapping it in duct tape, then paracord, and fixing a small pouch on it. Or you could try modding one, using it for practice, and the doing the full job on the other.

This is true but I'd only put things on there that would be close to hand requirements, I would definitely always carry a spare or two of things like ferro rods etc.

The sheath of the knife would need to be torn from me to loose it and that's the part the additions would be made.

I'm going to use it for my softies and/or sleeping bag in colder weather or just for spare clothes etc.


I dont think I'll bother with underquilt as I have Thermarest NeoAir aswell as softie jacket/trousers for colder nights.

What's your opinion on underderquilt vs sleeping mat, is it better without mat as I wasnt sure about whether it tended to slip out or not etc? (I'm a side/toss/turn sleeper)

My Thermarest is the NeoAir (non-self inflating). I too dont like the self-inflating as they're too bulky and tbh not comfy so dont really serve purpose for me. The NeoAir is awesome, Its really comfy and packs down to size of a energy drink can so its a plus on both counts.

Yeah but those cases are quite rare. I also have a thin foam mat for under the neoair and if it did happen I have a repair kit (Or duct tape) with me. If that doesnt work I have softies/sleeping bag for comfort/insulation until get home to order new mat or repair.
