Big surprise. The wife spotted a good deal on an LG Optimus 4x HD android phone, which she promtly purchased with me standing behind her, and then she handedit over to a speechless me. She called it and advance on my birthday gift (which is in september) :-) I thought it would be for our middle boy, who broke his phone last month. Now he have to make do with my old one, he he
So now I am downlaoding all sorts of stuff for it. Found a nice time lapse camera app that will be fun to play with :-)
I've had androids since 2009, so I know my way around them. Just never had something this "advanced" and fast before, so having tons of fun here in the rain...
B est of all, it may free up some funds for a gopro cam system later when I get my tax refund in August :-)

A roll of Reflectix type stuff from Wickes. (Aluminium coated bubble-wrap) for making bag /pot cozies
I bought a couple of rolls of the 'foil both sides' variety from B&Q a fair while back. I have used it for pot cozies, mug cozies, pouches for putting in the dehydrated meal packs whilst they are rehydrating, an extra layer under the hammock when the minus figures hit, a seat mat that lives in my pack and comes out whenever needed (also good under the feet in the hammock and a mat for the pack at night)
I am sure it could be used for more things but just waiting for inspiration and the need to arrive as I have loads of the stuff left.

I think I'll be going for the GoPro Hero 3 Silver Edition. From what I've seen the Black edition does not have oomph enough to defend an extra 100£ as it is here in Norway, and what extra ooomph it has, just sucks battery time out of it. But we'll see what money is left after I have had to M.O.T my over due car with a dodgy hand brake and a suspicious "clang" sound coming from the front suspension during sharp turns...so May have to get a the White edition instead. I could downscale to Hero 2 I know, but I want the wi-fi :-)

Got these mugs as part of my kit miniaturisation project 9610
The little stainless mug will nest inside the Ti mug , once the handle is removed ,
and is just ripe for conversion into a miniature wood gas burning stove ...
Conventional wisdom states that normally aspirated , convection powered ,
stoves work better the larger they are and small stoves don't ...
Reckon for a fiver its worth a giving it a go hey ?

My thought exactly, plus as it is meant to be a cycling bag it has a mesh helmet holder (like a zipped in rain cover, but it clips on rather than just cover the pack) which I can stow my waterproofs in, just in case the weather turn quickly, as it has done a couple of times this week.
from the picture it looks to be quite hi-spec
To be honest, the last pack I got from Lidl, a 25L - 30L pack, has be my day sack of choice since I got it over a year ago. Even done a couple of 'minimal kit' hammocking over nighters with it. Well made and sufficiently 'pockety' to serve my needs. This new bag seems to be as well made and had an equal amount of thought put into its design.
Like I say, I'll take it out with me over the weekend, if it should prove to be wanting in any way, I'll let you know.

A bit of classic British enamel ware for my WWII kit;
Falcon 14 cm. (1½ L) enamel tea pot (white w. blue rim); http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0090NDUMI/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These are awesome (read my full rewievs under the product listings)! I originally bought these for my WWII re-enactment kit, but I keep finding myself using them around the house as well - and I have no doubt I will also be bringing them with me when out and about in The Nature. The mugs have thicker walls than any of my other enamel muggs (I have around eight I believe), even thicker than the original 60's one I have from my mother.

Finally picked up a svord peasant knife. Handle definitely needs work, as does the spine of the blade, but a quick pass on an ultra fine slate stone and she's hair popping sharp, so i am pleased overall :)

Fishyfolk that looks amazing, see a program the other day saying that a pro slings man was hitting a target at 3000newton meters or 3kn(i maybe slightly wrong but it was 3000?nm or 3knm) the sling was all braided hemp one end was looped to fit the middle finger and the other end was straight but he was saying at that pressure you could kill a man at 30 yards, they used stones from a river bed flattened by the flow of the water and also that when the end of the sling is released it should break the sound barrier, sorry if you know this stuff already but it amazed me to think some thing so simple could be so devastating
i got myself a pair of binoculars the other day from a local antique shop nothing amazing just some old Korean made things at 10x50 magnification, with a case though they were a bit dirty so i stripped them down and give a good clean on the lenses, now they are crystal clear, for only a tenner, bit big to carry all day in the case, but does fit well if you put the neck strap over one shoulder and carry them underneath the other, dont even notice they are there 90% of the time
cheers

I managed to get a pair of Nikola 8-32 x 50 at a local charity shop, for £10 too :). Like yours (after your restoration work), they're crystal clear, and have a nice smooth action to them. They are quite modern, so probably a little lighter than yours, which makes them "ok" for carrying around.

I've got a couple of sets of these Neil and they are not a bad bit of kit. if you have florescent guy lines and fiddle about with them to get the angles right, they provide enough illumination so you can see where you are camped, but do not light up the night like a lantern, announcing to anyone else near by "HERE I AM."
The only downside I have found with them is, if you are trying to use them in very hard ground and end up having to use a mallet to give them purchase, the lights have a habit of coming out of their housing, as you are pounding the pegs into the ground. The lights still work and they fit back in there housing, but after they have popped out once, they tend to pop out all the time.
I have not bought anything of consequence for a little while now, but I did pick up a pack of 3 light sticks, a multi purpose mat and a 4 pack of instant beef noodles in the 99p Store yesterday.

Expanda panels are definitely something I've been considering for a while. I've even gone so far as to get a hold of a couple of spare not fit for use, surplus bags to have a crack at making a couple of expanda panels of my own (but like several other projects, this idea is currently stuck in the planning stage, due time constraints, procrastination, slipping into the habit of doing things dreckly and general excuse making).
I look forward to hearing how you find your new bag suits you Wayne.

Yeah that was my thought also, Use a walking pole instead of the one they sell.
Good to hear an opinion on the minipeak from another zephy owner :) Do you use it with the inner nest or without?
jus_young
16-08-2013, 02:27 PM
I like to have the inner nest for bug protection. I do have a tendency to get eaten alive. I also take an old poncho to lay out in the other half as a bit of protection from the floor particularly if its wet. I do like the space for getting dressed, cooking in inclement weather and gear storage. I really can't say that I have come across anything better and certainly not at that price.
Just a quick note for those contemplating one of these, if you do use the walking poles for the tent, an adaptor is needed to join two poles together. This is also available from Backpackinglight.

How do you find the mini peak in heavy rain? Notice it only has a 2500 HH fly and 4000 ground sheet.
jus_young
16-08-2013, 06:10 PM
Did have some pretty good showers when at Talland Bay couple of weeks back and had no problems. The inner nest is well away from from the fly. Couldn't say that I have been in any torrential downpours yet but so far so good.
Just remembered they have a podcast about the standard mini peek on Backpackinglight where they were out in horrendous weather and survived.
Adam Savage
16-08-2013, 08:40 PM
Sounds good to me :) Might consider purchasing one, but was never sure what the weatherproofing was going to be like. All my tents are 4000-6000 HH and 10000+ ground sheets. Might explain why they are so heavy lol.

It's not so much a pole extender more a linking section that joins two poles together by replacing the bottom sections of the walking poles. I will take some photos later and post it up.

It's not so much a pole extender more a linking section that joins two poles together by replacing the bottom sections of the walking poles. I will take some photos later and post it up.
I checked bud and one decent sized pole should suffice as the Luxe height is 140cm. Those extenders must be for smaller poles or higher tarp setups?

A standard pole at full length is 135cm. When set at full length they are not at their strongest which is why it is best to use two poles linked together. The weakest part of the pole, ie the bottom section, is not used and the overall structure is much more secure and stable.

Ah I see now. Although I cant really see the tent putting too much strain on pole even at full length?
I have ordered a 144cm LEKI Makalu for use with the tent, hopefully it should be ok. If not will get another and adapter.

Few bits on antler from the furry friends in the house shop, a pillar drill from that auction site, a motion sense light for the shed from the LIttLe low price supermarket and loads of meat and beer for the Bday BBQ tomorrow!
from the surplus store, i managed to get a soldier 95 pattern sewing kit £7, a 3 season roll mat £5, a mora companion £13 (needed a replacement i bent my other blade), 2x tiny tin openers £1 and a four season sleeping bag for £22.50, looking around the net its possible to get all this kit a bit cheaper
Edit: tested the 4 season bag last night, 5 degrees only jeans and a base layer long sleeve t shirt was fairly warm did have to put a jumper on at about 3 ish this morning as the fire had died off, roll mat is ok, and the mora is alright too
