Ha ha, my car camping/pulk hauled back pack is now this one. A 125 litre Norrøna Recon Pack...the side pockets are detachable and comes with carrying straps to be used as a get away pack :-)

That looks like a really nice pack however I would be too tempted to pack too much if I had one that big. End up breaking my back trying to get to camp :D

That looks like a really nice pack however I would be too tempted to pack too much if I had one that big. End up breaking my back trying to get to camp :D

Mine needs to be that big the get my gear to camp in one haul. The only things in the main compartenment is:

Sleeping bag (fills 80% of the space), Jerven bag, fleece liner for sleeping bag. and on top of that isnide it is my get home back with my cooking kit.
In the bottom compartemnet is my Snugpack underblanket, softie kit and poncho.

Left side pocket: Hammock
right side pocket: DD XL tarp and a 10 litre dry bag with clothes.

What space is left is for food, and then it's full, lol

The funny thing. Empty it weighs the same as my old 60 litre pack. And it does not feel very heavy packed like this. But ok...I have not packed the saw, and the food. And I would need to pack more of the clothes. But there are really no "luxuries" in there now...that sleeping bag is just so enourmous. But that is what I need for winter. And I like that
if I need to I can always pack a little more as I am never going to haul this monster for miles. It will either be cradled nicely in my pulk in winter, and in summer carried (with a ligher, smaller sleeping bag) a few hundred meters from wherever I park the car.

My kit is not so heavy really...it's just very bulky, so I need a large pack to carry it in.

nice Rune i really like that pack, the leather logo is awesome, whats the weight of the pack loaded??

i have taken my 120ltr bergen for an 8 mile trek to the woods the other day, weighed it and it come in just shy of 65kg, not good for the busted shoulder or the back as i'm not used to trekking with that much weight on the back, but really do intend to get up to the 30km mark with the loaded pack, i dont drive so walking it is

I have no idea how much it weights as I don't have a scale. But nowhere near 65kg :-)

Anyway, when I take off the sidepockets it fits perfectly inside my paris pulk, So I d not plan to carry it much :-)

Anyway, Norrøna is sort of famous around here for making quality gear....sadly at a price point miles above my wallet...

Czech Army Bedroll
UCO Brass Candle Lantern
Hudson Bay Tinder box + Flint, Steel, charcloth, rope, armadou, etc.
Cold Steel Trail Hawk
Tatonka 1.6 Kettle, although may swap this for a Mors pot or other type.

Also thinking of getting a new knife to replace the bushlore one I have, although may just stick to that for now and maybe tart it up a bit instead.

Any advice/ideas welcome :)

Next month most likely. I don't think ill be going all out and taking only vintage/traditional stuff on first try just in case but will try and take as little as possible, which will be hard for me as I really like my modern gear and always end up taking loads of bits and bobs. Just thought it would be good to try doing something different (at least different for me) and set myself a challenge.

Will put up a trip report once done. :)

I must admit, it can be more hassle than it's worth trying to find tinder in some places.
Charcloth will probably be the best tinder for both flint and steel, and magnifier method. Maya dust can be good, but it tends to "dry out" quickly, even in a tin.
You'll have to let us know what you find the best :)

Good ole pioneers and the American natives nearly always carried a tinder pouch. Unless your in a good birch forest finding a tinder that will light from a spark in the wet is a real pain. Even when stuffing it in various warm areas of your clothing to dry.

There is a reason why we have flogged all of them off over in England...

But I thibnk the story of them is this. The UK soldiers that came over here, saw the soldiers of the Norwegian army wear them. And thought: This must be good arctic gear. The Norgies are wearing it. Not knowing that a Norwegian soldier at the time would be punished for being "out of uniform" if he did not :-)

We hated most of our gear. The only things that where more or less ok was the combat jacket/trousers (provided it did not rain, and a few other things. The Norgie NOT ammong them. And that for the resons sapper states above. I.e when you get wet, it's terrible.

I've been on some hikes where a wash after you've set-up for the night would have been dreamy, but there been no water source nearby and on-board water was more valuable than gold! I use baby wipes in these situations, but find I still get sticky pit syndrome Ha!

some vehicles run on multiple fuels therefore its easier to find fuel - and it all depends on MPG, size of jerry can and of course your fuel tank size - youre not getting far using a GT40 as a bug out vehicle ;)

A cheap as they get, wind proof/ water ressistant (not water proof) classical scandi "mountain anorak complete with chest pocket and fake wolf fur to protect the face...
Got a nice discount as the buttons fell off when I tried it on, but else the quallity looks sound enough. Just have to go over all the buttons.

Don't plan to do any mods in it, except give it a good bath in something that will water proof it some more, and perhaps change the elastic waist and hem and hood drawstrings. Elastics are no good in the cold.
Just have to find something else than the classical cotton strings. They tend to suck up water from melting snow, then freeze solid...

Anyway, should be more comfortable to wear than last years gore tex combat smock....that will is now demoted to the rain gear sack...
but then....it is wet a lot here, so it will proably be more used than the anorak anyway...but looking forward to be in the woods and not look like I am playing army...or one of them survivalist types...

Optimus 111 stove :happy-clapping:

Been after these for a while. And secured one in a very good trade :-)

It's not been used for a few years so the gaskets are probably blown and the current owner informs me it's leaking.
So I will order a repair set with all of those and get it fixed.

Used these in the army, and this is one of the Norwegian army versions of it. So I will burn parrafine on it.
Gonna be a blessing not having to risk it with the monster I have now anymore.

Anyway it will be fun to own one of these. As I love doing maintenance on stuff like this :-)

It wilol be in my hands on Monday :-)

I got the Optimus in hand today.

And here it is in all it's glory:

10704

I am not 100% sure but I think it is an Optimus 111-T, which is a multi-fuel burner. If so it can burn white gas, denatured alcohol as well as parafine. But I will use parafine only, it's safer as it won't go boom if there ever is a leak. And in Norway it is only approved for parafine anyway, as the label in Norwegian clearly says: "Benyttes utendørs. Kun med parafin i Norge" - To be used outside - Use only with parafine in Norway.

As you can see it has some rust boiling trough the paint. So I will have to do something about that I guess.

10705

Inside it is fairly okay. The odd rust spot here and there, but the burner is sound, with no leaks. Just need to remove some crud in the pre-heating pan.

10706

Interestingly there is no pump leather cup on this one, only an "o" ring. THE JURY IS STILL OUT ON IF i LIKE THAT.

10707'

I did a burn test. Mucked it up first by pumping to much pressure in the tank with a high yellow flame as a result. So reset and did it again. Nice blue flame, with just a hint of yellow. Normal for a silent burner I am told. No leaks.

The former owner, has had it for years, but only fired it up 8-10 times. The rust is because it's been sitting in his garage for years...

So will swap out all gaskets on it before I depend on it for my cooking on an over nighter :-)
Overall happy with my trade :-)

In my quest for using alternative power products ... after testing quite a few torches ... this is the one !!

http://waka-waka.com/products/

I have run this on full power for 12 hours, followed by a further 12 hours on low power and it was still working fine.

Just leaving it in the window all day re-charges it.

A flashing light tells you if it is charging and allow you to position it for the most efficient charge.

On the move you can fit it to your rucksac with a caribiner, or similar and in camp you can strap it to a tree, or leave it free standing.

Not particularly 'pretty', but damn well 'soldier proof'.

I bought the basic model, that is just a light and am well happy with it

That will probably be me then as I'm going away early on Friday so paid the extra for next day delivery. I'm not much or a writer though so will probably just say whether they're sh1t or decent (IMO) :)

They look/sound quite good though and for the price you cant go wrong either way and I was looking for a nice folding knife anyway so worth a punt.

Two travel vacuum storage bags from Dunelm Mill. They have a zip lock seal and you just roll them to expel the air. I've used one to keep some emergency warm clothes in the car. Not bad for £1.99. Oh and a sewing machine :) And lots of furniture.

Browsed trough the local thrift store yesterday when my eyes fell on a couple of viking style cape pins, probably made by the same smith that made my fire steel. So I grabbed them.
Walk over to the cashier who ask me if there was a price tag on them. There was none, so she shrugs, and charge me 1£ for the pair :-)

The pic is not the actual one I got, but same style :-)
Will be nice to keep a wool blanket on me by a camp fire. And could probably be mis used asa fire steel to :-)

Went to the car boot today and another bow saw caught my attention. I would've just walked on, but my wife asked how much for the saw and I heard 20p so I simply couldn't say no. I have two about the size of the green one (24"), the little baby is barely big enough to be any use (a folding saw is usually better) but look at the monster I bought today for 20p!

Been on a bit of a spending spree past couple of months..
Made myself a nice posh ridge line using dyneema and tarp flyz for both my hammock setups
Did the Whoopie sling mod to both hammocks
Made my own longer Whoopie slings
I got myself a titanium cook pot and finished off my meths stove stand and pot stand
Bought a knife blank and got myself some curly birch and a bright blue liner
I made my self a polishing kit with a motor from a pillar drill
Bought myself a load of polishing compounds and mops
All in all I've not done too bad a got my self some very useful gear and equipment (my mallet handles are like new)

;) Cheers Dave

Nice collection. I've got a vintage one about the same size as your green one which is an awesome camp tool. The "baby" ones also accept a hacksaw blade which makes them almost useful and the blades particularly so. My hacksaw in the toolbox in the Land Cruiser has a baby bushsaw blade with it - it's lighter and more compact than a chainsaw for the recovery kit.

On a businesstrip to NZ I picked up a handful of these very handy 4" handlines. Perfect size to have it tucked away in a pack for any unexpected fishing opportunities.

It came rigged with hook, swivel and hook...although the hook ist ridiculously large for freshwater needs in Europe. Will change that anyhow

The lighter ist just for size comparison!

I have a similar canoe (Pelican Explorer). I have always liked the idea of rafting 2 canoes together, you can even have a platform in between and pitch a tent on it! There are some things you have to be careful of, like ensuring the canoes are properly trimmed, but I am sure you will have researched this.

I found this account of a rafting trip interesting;

lol, indeed bud :D

I have been doing quite well for a while, giving my account a rest as I pretty much have all bases covered now. That was until recently when I fell in love with a friends superfly tarp/ridgeline setup as well as their Caldera Cone stove. Love how the tarp packs down to 1/4 size of the DD 3x3 and weights next to nothing at same time as been roughly same size but with added doors on ends.

Sounds good. Might look into one of these superfly tarps myself :)

They look awesome :)

Only catch is that they cost £100. You'll also have to get some shockcord for the guys as its silnylon and apparently they stretch/shrink a bit with wind/rain so the shockcord keeps tension. I've also got the above bits for ridgeline as its so quick and easy to get setup and also weights next to nothing.

Adam Savage
