I went for the Eurohike backpacker, from millets or blacks. It's on offer for £24.99 plus a small delivery charge. the sleeping area is 2.3m long and its classed as a two person. I haven't had chance to try it yet, but I will be spending a night in it tomorrow night, so can report back with some photos.

I have a eurohike backpacker that I got on my 17th birthday, (nearly 23 now) so its pushing 6 years and it hasn't let me down at all. It survived gale force winds/torrential rain in Anglesey when other peoples tents were getting damaged and blown away. The only thing I had to replace is a section of the rear pole that snapped of its own accord on the week long summer scout camp last year, but I just duct taped it until I got home and it still worked like a champ. =]

That'll be good Crazysaint. I am away next weekend and am going to use my Gelert Solo which is as snug as a sleepingbag for me (just tried in garden for a minute or two so far) - i will be taking my tarp n bivvy as well just in case i cant get on with it. The small size and weight plus some good reviews (for the money) led to my purchase - pack size is very small and weight 1.3kg. I'll get some photies as well and review it all being well.

I heard the poles were a little on the brittle side.

Thats not bad, the backpacker is 2.6 kg with the heavy/cheap pegs you get with it, so twice as much. It's just a case of if you need the extra room or not. The reson i got the backpacker is the good reviews and it can be used without the inner on hot summer nights, which I'm guessing, could make it a lot lighter.

Yeah, I wasn't too keen on the "cathedral" style pole set up they have now, but if it does the job, I can live with that LOL

I prefer single skin tents myself, as they are lighter than the doubles, and easier to erect. Glad to hear you fit into it ok though LOL.

Realbark, you may find it a little cramped in there. Could sleep diagonally for that little extra room I guess.

You wont be able to sleep diagonal in the lidl one mate :)

You have some shoulder room and could get a bit of kit in but in my opinion not much and like I said at 6' 2inches your feet are near the end :)

I havent had it out yet as I have just come in the door about 5 mins ago but on the diagram it looks like you can sit up and it says the lenght is 1.90 plus 30 cm. Im 1.63 I think so I shoul fit ok. If I dont manage to get it out today I will do it first thing and post on here if thats ok with you?

I had a look in my local Lidl last evening, couldn't find the tent or rucksack and coudn't see them on any displays and can't find the tent on the Lidl web site, anyone know when this offer started ?. I'm 5ft 8" so should fit me fine if I can find one...!

Hi Guys as promised some pics of the lidl tent I got yesterday :) I think after having it out today I could say it is bigger than I thought but still a bit tight and you can sit up at the doorway ad have a bit of kit inside. Pricewise and weight wise it is ok well for me it is I think.

The lidl rucksack I bought with it is not too bad either the base unzips at the base so that you have more room inside. With it unzipped and the side straps loosened of I could easily get my Kelly kettle in (and it is big), some pans that I bought to (Vango single person set) a large clip box and I still had room to get a new sleeping bag in that I also got with hammock. The tarp and sleeping mat I could attach on the outside somewhere.

I just bought a new pouch for my medical gear. It has elastic strips inside to keep things in place nice and tidy and plenty of room to put larger things aswell.

I also bought a new water bottle that comes with an aluminium cup and a pouch with a small pocker for some water tabs.

Really pleased with them both. They both have MOLLE attatchments that can be used with MOLLE vests/belts/platforms etc but easy enough to just use the MOLLE straps as a belt loop.

It is meant for rougher carving jobs in the field. Just make yourself an improvised batton from a log and you are ready to go.

Mora makes them aswell, but the blade of the Hultafors is one mm. thicker and the handle looks sturdier.

Good question. It says they have a waterproof membrane so they should be.
Tried them on and first impressions seem good. Very light in weight and good ankle support. They also have a nice springy step when walking. I'm on me hols next week so I'll get a chance to try them out.

Sounds good so far then. Even if you find they aren't totally waterproof, you could always treat them yourself. They probably are though, being fishing boots for around the waters edge and all.

If you hadn't said the maker was William Rodgers, I would have sworn those were both Marbles hunting knives. They're just lovely, either way. Love the age on the blades.

I cant get hold of a genuine 58 Poncho, all the 58 stuff seems to be high in price as it becomes rarer and my issue 58 one got wrecked . I was issued a hoochie type tarp as a replacement and thats still going strong but is smaller in sheet and heavier and is a larger packed size (when weighed in the hand) than the Tenth Wonder Tarp

...... I'm turning into an ultra light convert, atleast for playing on mountains anyway

It's all Matt the Quarryman's fault!! He got me started on this obsession with lightweight kit, but having walked 20 miles over Dartmoor on Saturday with everything I needed for a day, and if necessary an uncomfortable night, out I am so pleased he did. I'm not sure what my pack weighed at the start of the day but it was the lightest I've ever walked the moors with. :)

Yeah those hoochie types are pretty narrow. I know what you mean with the price of the 58s, some places want £45 for them! I went for the DD MC tarp, it's a decent size and light, but £32 isn't very cheap and it isn't very ember resistant. Will definitely look into those tenth wonder tarps again though.

In the UK nearly all SAR are volunteers unless its military - biggest kept secret in the emergency services community - Kit weight varies dependent on conditions, but winter would see the duvet jackets, ice tools and crampons come out so thats added weight. Im a medic too so always have advanced medical kit with me. probably looking at 15 - 20 kg of kit on a regular basis, then throw on top of that things like O2 cylinders and the specialst evac stuff - 1/2 a stretcher weighs in at 15 kgs and has to be man packed everywhere - unless the RAF are around in thier parrafin budgies :happy-clapping: :happy-clapping:

anyway PM me for more info always happy to help and have contacts in several different areas

A £1 fishing pole...!

Inspired by Steve's recent 6ft telescopic fishing pole bargain I went hunting for one and found a telescopic 7ft version in Poundland.

Here's the specs and some pics...

Weight = 44 grams (1.5 ounces)
Length closed = 545 mm (21.5 ")
Length extended = 2100 mm (7 ft ...packet says 8 ft...!)
thickest pole diameter = 13 mm (0.5")
Tip diameter = 1.5 mm

I also realised that line, small hooks, swivels, shot weights etc could be stored in the hollow tube at the thick end if put in a thin sleeve.

I think id rather be comfortable than surrender to the 'pressures' of light/ultralight camping

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've been to both extremes. In my youth, I was more the poshcrafter than anything, and for a 4 day weekend/20-25 mile hike my pack was pushing over 50 lbs. I had my inflatible sleeping pad, folding chair, heavier cookset, lots of comforts.

Sometime in my youth, a back injury caused me to re-think my heavy ways, and I went to the other end of the spectrum to ultra-light packing. Not many comforts, but I never hiked faster or farther than the couple of years I dedicated myself to that pursuit.

In the intervening years, I've mellowed somewhat. I've found my happy medium between posh and psycho-light, and found a comfortable way to exist out there without having to carry too much.

In keeping with the thread, I haven't bought much recently, but just received one of THESE (http://sogknives.com/store/TFSA-98.html) as a gift. Light, good steel, interesting lock, jury is out on the durability or utility of it, but good so far.

In preperation for the Poshcrafting event at Cornwall RV (well I have got the family this time):

New Vango air beds
Coleman Hudson double sleeping bag
Single ring gas stove
25 litre water carrier
Table for inside the tent

Which means that I was then able to buy myself:

Vango ultralite thermarest mat
Atom X sleeping bag

Tried out the mat and sleeping bag over a 4 day 3 night Scout jamboree during the long weekend break. Used in the Vango Banshee with wind and rain but I was happy. Lovely bits of kit, sleeping bag was cosy and I found myself getting a little too warm on the last night (or that could have been the berry cider), and the mat was so comfortable that I slept better than in my bed at home.

I have just tested the Trangia gas burner (which is made by Primus), it is - not suprisingly - a lot faster than the classic meths burner - but also a lot noisier. This is definitly not a quiet stove! My Jetboil makes less noise actually.

I roughly timed the boiling time for half a liter of water in the Trangia kettle vs. the same amount in a 0,5 L Trangia Duossal pot with the frying pan as a lid. When using meths, the kettle is significantly faster than the pot, when using the gas burner the diffrence is hardly noticeable. I don't think I will bother to bring the kettle when bringing the gas burner - aside maybe for sheer convinience.

Regards.

Jakob

Seriously, the microfibre towels are really very good. Let's face it, it's a towel and nothing more but as towels go, it's very good and dries the water off your skin. :)
