Somebody won the lottery ;)

I keep trying. Finally had some customers pay up after six months of excuses and promised payments that never materialised. Frustrates the hell out of me sometimes but seems to be the way at the moment.

Decided to buy another guitar, after a good few years of not playing, for a little campfire entertainment. Just need to remember all the tunes I used to know, and toughen up my finger tips again :)

£44.98 with postage, so nothing too special.

Keep saying that I will get mine out again. I bought one a couple of years ago to as I used to play those six strings a lot as a kid, but it has been stood in the corner of the bedroom ever since.

Yeah, shouldn't take too long. My fingers have gotten pretty soft lately though, with the nature of my recent jobs.

I played for about 4-5 years when I was a teenager, but nothing spectacular, just self tought tunes. Have been toying with the idea of a new guitar, for about 3 years, but always told myself "it's too bulky to drag to the woods". I've been finding I'm doing a lot more short trips now though :)

Last guitar I bought was a Washburn travel guitar. It's pretty small it even fits into overhead baggage. Always fancied making another 3 string cigar box slider though, but hard wood cigar boxes are getting harder to find now, the cardboard ones don't stand up to abuse much.

I considered getting the Martin backpacker, but £120+ (for a used one) isn't exactly disposable, if it gets damaged.
Not heard anyone play a 3 string slider. Sounds interesting

Midge_Fodder
23-03-2014, 10:39 AM
It's tuned to GDG or DAD, they are tuned specifically for playing slide so you always have a root,a 5th and an octave. It's blues at its most purest level. Youtube has plenty of fine examples of them.

Music is more practice than anything I find, plus after a while once you learn the notes in a scale, that scale can be on any instrument, so the same some can be played on any instrument.

I have one of the inox Opinels, which has a blue handle, made of some kind of compound material. Doesn't swell like the beech handled models :)
Have a Svord too, and both get equal use.

Depends how you open them. I chap the back and even when its swollen works. But the best way to stop it jamming, is put silicone grease at the hinge and around the lock ring.

Got my MSR Alpine Stowaway pot today. Very pleased with it. Was worried I had ordered one that was larger than I would want to carry. But the 1,6 litre turned out not to be frightening in it's size.
Had to pick it up at the post office myself, so stopped by Biltema and got a collapsible windscreem, and a couple of thoise cheap gas canisters. Turns out the price has been hiked up from 13,90 NOK to 17,90 NOK, while the price of the regular canisters have dropped from 49 NOK to 39 NOK...so the savings are not so great as before. But still worth it :-)

Added that to the pot allong with one of those chinese gas stove and stove adapters I purchased, so now I only need to make myself a cooking spoon for it, and ad some spices etc, and it will form the basis of a full cook set to bring on family outings or when I go out with a mate.

Might still order a smaller one for solo trips. But the portions I use to cook will normally fit the 1,6 perfectly. As I like to heat up leftovers the following morning or for supper. And with a lockable lid, this pot is perfect for this.

Also going to make a billy adapter for it so that I can hang it over the fire if I want to :-)

I was thinking this morning that you lived around there somewhere. We were staying over at Ruda, Croyde Bay for a few days and I remembered that somebody else on the forum had mentioned Cassies. I also found it odd that they didn't do online sales, it was one of the first things I asked.

The weather certainly made up for it though.

Just a couple of miles down the road. Croyde is a lovely place but you need to have a small fortune to live there. I spent the day travelling half way to London and back for a job today but I know where I would rather have been!

Contary to what I have seen on youtube and what people are telling me, it appears that my GSI stainless kettle nests just fine inside my new 1,6 litre MSR Stowaway pot, provided I turn the lid of the tea pot upside down. So that was a win. But that leaves no room for the wind screen, and the gas burner...well, it could probably fit inside the kettle, but that one is full of brew goodies. that this lad ain't planning on leaving at 'ome ;)

But nice to know when packing for a longer stay n the hills :-)

I was told the fixtures for the handle on the GSI kettle "stuck out" (or up) stopping the lid of the Stowaway from being fitted.
Never tried it myself, so have no idea. Good to hear it fits though, even if there isn't any spare room for the windshield, etc

That was what I was told too, and they stick up a fair bit. I could probably dremel of 3-4 mm without hurting anythig. But the top of the lid sticks up more. And when I invert the lid, the lip if it is lower than the carry handle fixtures... but there ain't mm to spare, and you have to position the GSI right in the middle.

Also if I play with it, I could probably fit the rest of the stuff inside. I'll have a look tomorrow. But I do not like to put "dirties" that may contaminate the inside of the pot in it. Like burners, fuel etc. So I will wait until I have some bags to use. ordered some cotton bags for the purpose as I am out of old jeans to make jeans leg string bags out of :-)

I got a nasty case of sun poisoning on my head back in high school during a ROTC field trip.
So I bought myself a Tilley T3...not going to take any chances. It also keeps the bugs from circling around my head like a halo in summer, and there is a certain aesthetic appeal to it ;).

hello,
Rooting around in Sports Direct found Karrimor Fire Steels with Striker £1.00 so bought a batch normally £4.99 *(sale price) The steels themselves are fine quite large BTW, the handles are not properly fixed IMHO & the striker ok is adequate but is not great. I just removed the striker added my own I'll keep the rest intact incase & boxed for now. I think these would make great for re-handling projects that was my first thought when I saw them at that price. Don't know how they compare to more expensive fire steels? I shall try out later. Plus x2 base layer Karrimor T-shirts £1.99 normally £9.99 not £7.99 (sticker on rear)

I never buy the brand name fire steels anymore. The cheap ones I find at super markets etc. are just as good. The quallity issues are as you also say with the way the handle is fixed, so I rehandle them with juniper.

Finally decided to get an action cam, and after much research on price vs features, I opted for the Sony HDR-AS30V (http://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/actioncam/hdr-as30v).
Has some interesting GPS functions, such as telemetry, location, and route mapping, plus an external mic input, so sound quality can be improved for different situations. Also one of the few action cams to have stereo capability too.

Managed to get one for £185 (+/- a few pence), which is about as cheap as I could find for a reputable seller.

Sorry Jus I read "+%*@ in comics at the age of 4 how can they be described as bad language if they were in childrens literature in the 1950's. I whole heartedly agree with the remit of no profane or abusive language but really ! grawlixes are a bit non entity surely. I apologise and will abide by the rules in future, Ken

There is method in our (the mods) madness, but further discussion should take place HERE (http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?7976-The-Subject-Of-Bad-Language-Behaviour)

hello,
tent peg I was just visiting the retail park & popped in for a browse loads of camping gear on sale reduced price. I spotted the Karrimor section & spent £1.00 on each of the fire steels & picked up a couple of base layer shirts for out & about locally. I'll have a browse in the other 2 stores see if they're on reduced price. £1.00 even at £4.99 from £9.99 that's not bad for a spare fire steel rod. Then again does it have the same quality as more expensive rods? I've tried & tested got a bundle of tinder going in no time, nice shower of sparks, so they do what it says on the box
Regards
David

Was this just in your local one Dave? could do with stocking up myself!

Been carrying an emergency blanket in my first aid kit for numerable years now, handy things when your training novices to scuba dive or climb/absail - lots of sitting round and not all cope well with cooler weather.
But those emergency tents are a real improvement T^

Indeed. Thinking of replacing the original/larger one I have with the mini and also using it as a inline filter maybe.

It's a good idea to use a pre-filter for the mini (and maybe the standard one too), when using it inline, especially if you plan on filtering turbid water.
I found they clog up pretty fast with silt if you're not careful, and you end up using more clean water to backflush it, than you actually gain from it.

I would only be using the sawyer for clear streams etc. Anything else I would use the travel tap, which is a much better filter imo and better for areas where you know there isn't going to be much clear water.

Do you find the travel tap a little on the slow side though? I've heard several people mention it, unless they have changed the design a little now.

Definitely slower but has a better filter and also doubles as a standard water bottle (bit bigger).

I had to ask for replacement to be sent at one point though as the lid on first one seamed to fail and leak, either threading or maybe seal. This is caused from squeezing bottle to hard most likely but they said it was a known prob and has been improved on newer model.

Textile yarns are measured in various units, such as: the denier and tex (linear mass density of fibres), ie how tight the weave is. I used parachute ripstop on mine, the weave is so tight it waterproof, hope this helps atb with the project, Ken

Iknow what you mean Rune ! I made a couple a few years ago and they worked tidy with wood out of my shed, but get them in the woods on a damp day and they just would not work the same. So if you have to take wood in with you it really defeats the object dont it ! Plus Ide rather keep my pans clean if I have to hump fuel in !. So I gave up on them and use gas, meths or build an open fire, Hope it does work for you though Rune, enjoy! atb, Ken

I have the original Wild Stove Bri but the clone is basically exactly same, although some come with diamond holes instead of round.

It's true that it is a bit of a pain to get going properly if wood is damp but as long as you don't over-fill it initially and try and get some good tinder/kindling going before you drop heavier stuff in its fine. Obviously much better in summer though, mine will be back in pack :)

Using wood pellets (the right ones) is an awesome fuel source and keep burning for a long time and still good if you just like cooking over wood flame. However it does tend to take some fun out of it and using collected twigs etc is much more enjoyable if you're in a location that has them. Pellets could be taken/used as a backup.

Well, I will it a test, including the kitty litter, if that sort can be found locally. But that will sort of kill the point of having it, i.e having to carry fuel with me. Half the time I forget to bring fuel for my alcohol stove, lol

Twigs and such worked well in the stioves I built, but only if very dry. If not very dry, adding fuel would kill the fire. And I would have to restart it again. And dry twigs, actually any kind of dry fuel is hard to find in the woods around here. I suppose I could fuel it on birch bark only, as there is plenty of dead standing here. But that would soot a lot...

Also the verdict on the Nordic Bushcraft forum ( http://bushcraft.no) on wood gas stoves is not encouraging. They are to small to work well with the fuel available they say. Wich is mostly birch here.

But I have not recieved it yet, so will give it an honest attempt or ten :-)

Learned that one a fair while back, not as good as it used to be though. They must have changed something in it.

lol :p
I just stick to Witch Hazel extract - great after-shave, keeps the acne away, and also a good mild antiseptic for first aid...and it doesn't have fragrances to attract the buzzies ;).

A Rab base layer. It's synthetic but I'm not too fussed about that TBH.

This wee haul,

12111

I have here as follows, starting from the top, of the pic:

A new possum and merino hat, Mrs Shug shrunk my last one. She said is was smelly and despite my protest washed it.

A Shemagh, comfy and useful.

A Razor-edge carving set. These are to save my good crook making tools, I will review these once I've have them a good go. As a footnote the Warren kits are razor-edge. These kits are a basic version of the more expensive ones sold as Razor-edge. If you want a range of knife blades buy the warren kit, if it's for the gouges you will have to stump up for the Razor-edge kit. It is also possible to get the spares in the UK if you are interested in the UK, for either expanding your range or simply for loss or damage.

What's it for bud, I have a few sitting around ATM, my late father in law was a serious military collector. (Moving house was fun as I inherited a decommissioned Brennan Gun, didn't want the neighbours freaking out). If I've got an Amo can that fits your requirements, I'd give you it for the cost of the postage.

Yeah, if not this year definitely next. :)

I'm hoping to get a bit of training in and improve fitness so with any luck I will give it a try in summer or autumn. Also looking at the Wolds Way.

I'm a long way of getting fit, I said "improve fitness" lol.

At this stage I just want to lose a stone or two and improve stamina. I have been biking and walking more than I used to so that will help. Just need to start eating better as well.

I really want to try and get out as much as possible this year and do some walking/camping in dales etc, especially in summer.
