Having felt the quality and then compared it to others on the market it is actually pretty competitive. £255 isn't too bad when there are rucksacks that are not much less and hole if you break wind near them.

I've unfortunately not seen it in the flesh yet but have seen it in a video on one oif my YT subscriptions and thought it looked a really nice pack. I do love my UL/modern materials/kit but I also have a place for the canvas/leather style as well. I can see me getting it this summer at some point hopefully :)

I have always advocated the use of waterproof barrels to keep gear dry. The "dry" bags I have had in the past can and do leak when immersed in water, this one however is different........it has a waterproof zip instead of a roll top closure.
It was a must :)

Wohooo, I won 4th prize in the Bushcraft Bartons video competition "carve a knife"
There where som amazing prizes, and 1st prize was a "Jacklore" knife, which went to a very worthy winner.
My prize was not bad either. A Cold Steel Bushman knife, a cordura knife pouch for a folding knife, a sharpening tool and a leather pouch for a Zippo lighter.
Been wanting that CS Bushman just for kicks for a while, just never been able to justify the purchase, so that will be fun to add to the collection. And I am sure it will be put to good use.
And I need a pouch for my leatherman tool, so that will be handy too.
Anyway, here is my entry :-)

Yes the very same reason I bought it, I first saw the bag at Hereford and saw the quality there however I couldn't buy it as it was going on a Herc that very evening, so I guessed if it was good enough for "you know who" ;) it was good enough for me.

Not bought but given, my dads old favourite bush shirt, it's an old OD green linen grandad shirt. It's about as old as me and in perfect condition. There's some sentimentality with that one. It appears in countless photos when we were camping when I was a bairn.

Supposed to be used but looks new to me, no sign of use or wear anywhere.
It was advertised as a 4 season but I reckon it's nearer to 3.
Comes with a white cotton liner that attaches via ties and buttons.
Wraps up in to it's own attached cover.
Not as heavy as I thought it would be.
Strange thing is it came with a rectangular white sheet, not sure if this was a packing error or meant to be snow camo lol

Yeah looks a nice bit of kit. Just wish it was a bit lighter but have decided I want to keep my UL gear for non-woody ventures and keep my traditional/old-skool gear for nice nights in woods :)
I like that you can use meths and it also has a bail arm for over a fire which is a bonus :)

I dont mind my beef dry, in fact I love it when outside is dry and crispy. Alternatively I will also be putting a tin underneath to catch juices so can keep basting every now and then if needs be. Then add juices leftover to gravy :)

I love it when I grab a bargain, especially other stuff recently which included the British Army artic large sleeping bag for £4.00. The answer to it is spending days, sometimes weeks looking on the selling sites and local papers for what you want. It does get boring but if you persist, you always get what you want at that cheaper price.

No idea bud, not arrived yet. It's Ti and only a 330ml so will likely be about 50-60g. I ordered it as I wanted a decent cup that was strong but light. I have a couple of nice folding cups for hiking/UL camping but this will go with my woody/bushy style kit :)

Know what you mean Adz ... I started with a tarp and cam net set up as a hide
for birdwatching / photography ... nice and cosy in there ...
so when I started using the tarp with a bivvi and overnighting
it was only natural to keep the cam net too ...
Still have the great views out but cuts down draughts and feels cozier ...
But as Sapper says you are not hidden from the early morning dog walkers !!!
Have had a few rude awakenings ...
you just have to make sure you're up before they are hey !!!
I don't worry too much about the stealth side of things ...

Long story short, used the noodles but instead of throwing the pots away my missus noticed that they were quite tough and strong and had a special surface design at the bottom so you dont burn your pinkies....Used them today on a walk to drink our coffee from..they make excellent strong, light cups......not bad for 50p each :)

I bought two saws at the car boot for 50p, then went up the tip to see if I could get my hands on a pipe for my little gas bottle stove. Ended up with two more files and ... something I've been looking for for a few years now; an old draw knife. The two files and draw knife cost a whopping £1! :D
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9n_42pw2IIA/VCf4XTZy8xI/AAAAAAAAXok/LkRIqUDCPYU/w1085-h612-no/IMAG5960.jpg
I'll have to turn new handles for the draw knife, but that's what I call fun.
The long single-handle saw has a blade length of 42". The two-handle saw is shorter, but it's also sharper. Anyone on here who likes these sort of saws will be horrified to think that I bought them to make a few kitchen knives from. Yes, I am thinking of cutting knife blanks from that saw. Would that be a terrible thing to do? The teeth are blunt and they have no kerf.
After touching the drawknife blade with a wire wheel, I found some markings. I can only just make out one of them, but not the other:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/--yF3V6m4N08/VCf4jMNgzYI/AAAAAAAAXn0/qRrjcdxWKK8/w1085-h612-no/IMAG5966.jpg
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6Gz6rSYCY6U/VCf4h4psCBI/AAAAAAAAXno/LTCJAU18ZyE/w1085-h612-no/IMAG5965.jpg
This is the only marking I could find on the big saw:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ANFi_IMfgns/VCf4lo0VQfI/AAAAAAAAXoM/2W5G20LEMNc/w1085-h612-no/IMAG5968.jpg
Considering that the two files and draw knife cost me £1, but I found 21p on the ground at the tip, and the two saws only cost 50p, I'd saw today was a rather good day. :D

Adam Savage
28-09-2014, 07:35 PM
I would imagine they are quite high quality. The name Sorby is a well known one amongst wood turners, but mostly under Robert Sorby these days. The Company changed the initials a few times, but looks like it kept the Sorby surname. One source says it is now a trade mark of Turner, Naylor and Marples, who are also widely known manufacturers.
The jester is actually "Punch" (from Punch and Judy I assume)

No problem Bernie. Some great finds you found there. I always prefer old tools to modern ones. If they've survived to this day, and are still usable (or usable after minimal work) then they must have been well made. At least that's my logic anyway lol

Yep, I've tucked a couple of T lights in the stuff sack with the Bothy, just in case. Because of it's handy size I also carry a 'Thermal Protective suit'...that's posh talk for a suit shaped thin plastic bag..:D. Normally it lives in the survival kit in my boat's abandon ship bag....The grinning wearer is not me...:D No prizes for sartorial elegance but I've tested it and phew! it is effective and packs down to approx: 18x13x4 cm's and weighs maybe 50-60 gms

Not exactly a good deal. But here goes. Yesterday my phone soft bricked itself for the 3rd time in one month. Luckilly I have it all backed up. But this time I have been unable to
get it working again. Spent 5-6 hours yesterday wrestling with it. My first and my last LG phone!
Then one of my cheeky bonus kids tells me that he has been saving up for a new phone (he is after the newer Sony Xperia Z3) and tells me he has been saving up and he only lacks a "small" ammount of money for to buy it...
So if I cover what he lacks, he will give me his old Sony Xperia Z1. That way both of us will have a "new" phone"...well, well, it ended up more expensive for me than the phone I had in mind,
but I got a far better phone. And this has more power than I really need. And I love the camera. So thats it...all he gets for x-mas this year is a pair of socks, I swear!

That is the brand that gave name to the military slang for a rucksack...Bergan :-)
It is a quality piece of gear, and it looks to be in tip-top shape too, and in it's time it was top of the line.
A modern version of that pack will set you back around 300£ here in Norway.
They also have a an excellent range of tents and outdoor clothing and are a well known brand here in Scandinavia.

Thanks for that info Rune. Working the dates back the Bergan seems to be from 1970-1. It belonged to someone who didn't make it home from the Falklands in 1982, apparently it was bought just for a college expedition when he was still studying, which is how his relatives can roughly date it. I've promised to take care of it and put it to good use..:)

I'll agree with you on that.!.Ive left it as it is so i can give it a true test.I see main use removing thick boar hide n layer of fat, rather than gutting, removing lymph glands etc.
There is no reason I cannot put a handle on it.Reason they have paracord is so it can be removed.as they recommend "battoning"downwards,ie,hammering on the handle..to split logs.
On some of the "demo/review"tapes,the cord works loose, after a few chopping strikes.so its not good for purpose.
