Pentax P30T SLR camera. One of the best 35mm film cameras ever made. All manual...and I paid £7,50 for it :-)
Searching for a lenses now but it uses K-mount lenses, wich means it can use every lens made in it's era, and they are cheap as chips now :-)

These cameras are superb. I used to own one but in a moment of daftnes gave it to my brother when I bought myself an all singing, all dancing Canon camera.
Anyway it had superb reviews in it's day, and is still an excellent little camera. Buying it just for the fun of shooting off a real roll of film once in a while :-)

No, as I said just seen it in somebody's kit and thought it would make a good addition to mine.

QuikClot® hemostatic devices are different from standard surgical gauzes and other hemostatic agents. They stop bleeding significantly faster and are more effective than standard gauzes—and they are just as safe and intuitive to use.1-5

Because of its non thermic reaction and it's hypoallergenic and it will stop wafarinised and heparin bleeding.

Also it doesn't migrate along the vascular system although that effect has been reduced due to using impregnated gauze

anyone looking for leather, i make slingshots and use leather for pouches...
i went on a mad google hunt for free leather swatches and most companies offer 6-9 free samples...

the smallest samples were 10x8cm but i had a few larger pieces around 30cm square... i managed to get around a kilo in various colours for free...

simmilarly, i look out for leather sofas that are being thrown away and harvest leather from them...

i have large sofa cusion sized pieces in a few different colours...

i have some green and black leather id be happy to share if you pay postage... or free if you want to trade for something... (if i am allowed here... if not. please disregard this)

i cant guarentee exact sizes but can confirm most pieces are more that 2 feet square...

i am also aware that i am new here and you dont know me from adam, but i trade alot on a slingshot forum and you can confirm with members there that i am indeed good for my word... i know this is not the place to say this, but i saw a few posts on leather purchased and so thought id add this here...

1270912710I picked up a light and compact 1lt thermos flask and after many hours reading reviews on all kinds of flasks I went for this one and it's great (esp when John Lewis matched an online price, so comes with their customer service and warranty etc) not much bigger than my 0.5ltr petrol station flask from about 10 years ago. I did the boield water test and really kept it warm for 24hr! left in in an unheated conservatory overnight and would pour a little out every few hours then missed 10 hours overnight, it did cool quicker as the level dropped but still good for a brew_ very impressed

At the other end of the spectrum I picked up an Aldi food flask a couple of days ago for £7.99 and to be honest had low expectations, it says good for 8hrs so filled it up with boiling water and let it rest, straight away I could feel the lid warming up so was expecting it to bleed heat and had the idea that if it really was pants I just take it back and so didn't match up to the claims (another reason for just boiled water) I only need it to last around 4 or 5 hours and the water was still plenty warm enough at this point (no one wants cold soup in winter), so with that in mind (and for the price) I'm happy to recommend, still not sure about the spoon, but good if you forget a decent one)

It's banged up and quite sooty from use by the Norwegian army I think, but perfectly servicable. And I have a gas burner to marry with it :-)

I have had a couple of these before. One that i got as a confirmation pressent, but was lost by my brother while I was in the army, and one that I left for the team when I left Sudan.

Took a second look at the trangia burner. And it has something I've never come across before, and that I instantly loved!
A pre-heater for the meths stove!

That will make it so much easier to light the meths in the cold, wich can be a chore. Basically its a holder with a wick pad, that you soak with meths. Then you light that, wich is much eaiser than lighting pure meths when it's cold. You then place the meths burner filled with meths on top. And when it's warm, it's a breeze to light the meths with a ferro rod.

Pictures on the way.

Was thinking about a video on it as a before and after as a few modifications are in order such as a fixed ridge line. There are a few places I pitch up where the tree distance does not allow for the 30 degree hang and a ridge line would get over the problem. There are a couple of videos on the DD site and Adrian from Northwest Bushcraft did a good video but can't find it on the site recently.

That is the Evernew titanium trivet as I lost my other somewhere on Exmoor. Gutted when I realised it was missing as it is a critical part of my setup and used all the time. Glad to have a replacement.

It can't get any better for me at the moment.

I've been looking to make a hammock topquilt for a while so visited a couple of charity shops forsomething suitable. First shop I came out with a hardly used heavy pine chopping board but in the second I found one of these.

http://www.smhc.co.uk/objects_item.asp?item_id=32804

Its a duck down Blacks of Greenock Icelandic sleeping bag in mint condition, Looks like it has never been used and it must be years old as the company started making them in the 1950's.

Its three seasons and Im going to open it up, adjust the size and make a footbox for it. Will be great for the Winter in a hammock.

I just bought myself a late Christmas present, it's a nice neat little back pack from Mountain Warehouse, model is a 50L High reduced from £59.99 to £29.99 (wouldn't have paid full whack but it's good value at £30)

I am trying to get away from being a mule, 50 litre sounds big but it certainly doesn't look 50 litre, my old pack is huge and heavy, even when empty.

Wooohoooo, my little Syma x5c-1 quadcopter toy arrived.
And it workds too!

It's gyro stabilized so very easy to controll. I was into RC planes a few years back, but all of that is gone from my hands, so I do have to rel-learn a few things.
So my problem is that when flying towards me I tend to stear it the oposite direction than I intended, and since I am used to fixed wing, I forget to keep the throttle up to remain aloft, so I guess my tree climbing skills will soon be tested... :ashamed:

Alos this thing is just a toy (yes, I know these are not really toys), so it is very light. So the slightest breeze and it gets lift and dissaepear into the blue, and gain distance fast if you don't
do something (it drifts away". But it fights the wind nicely, and it reminded me to fly it into the wind :-)

I ordered 5 extra batteries with it, as flight time is only 6-7 minutes with everything attached. A littlle more without the prop guards, camera and landing gear. If you use the camera, 4 minutes.
So I will get a little keychain cam for it, then the cam will have it's own battery supply. Now it drains power from the main battery wicis only a 3,7V, 600mAh battery (the battery that comes with the quadcopter is a 500mAh battery, so even less).

Anyway, this is a simple thing. No gps homing, no live transmitting of pictures to ground. I paid 45US$ for it, and it's just for a laugh and to see if this is something I want to explore further.

It's not a bushcraft item, but it may help lessen the door step mile and get me outside :-)

I won 25£ worrth of purchases at a local sports outlet. Never set my feet in those as prices are something a kin to highway robbery.
The only ones shopping there are those with to much money, and UK/NL soldiers on winter training excercises...

But ok, I went in there with my 25£ gift card. And the only thing costing under 25£ in there was a pair of socks...i refuse to give anyone 25£ for a pair of socks,
so I looked at some Helle knives, but no models that I wanted. Looked at a Victorinox knife that looked a lot like the Wenger Ranger 55, but a little smaller...so Id rather get the Wenger...
Finally spotted a 32oz Camelbak Eddy bottle for 23$ and to pairs of chemical handwarmers for 3£.

Never setting my foot in that place again if I don't absolutely have to...

Yes but that's irrelevant because I can still take the Sawyer as backup, it's only 60g and very small. Plus I have been reading a lot about Katadyn and the vast majority or people have said they love them and are very reliable.

I may even use the Sawyer for quick top ups for water bottle and the Katadyn for base camp water collection.

My new softshell jacket arrived.
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/High-quality-Lurker-Shark-skin-Soft-Shell-TAD-V-4-0-Outdoor-Military-Tactical-Jacket-Waterproof/1048281822.html

At size 3XL it just barely fit length wise. But roomy enough to get a wool sweater in it without looking like a stuffed sausage...

I have quite long arms, and they could not have been a cm shorter on this jacket. Also a little short in the front waist, but it is longer in the back.
Other dislikes: No side pockets. The zippers on the front pockets go all the way down, so if you open them with your monile phone in it, it will fall out. No inside pockets. And all the elastic
to zinge it in are quite thin, and I will probably replace them at some stage.

+for the arm pockets, usefull for credit or membership cards.

Overall I am happy with it though. I ordered the dark green one. It will be ok for spring, summer and autumn use. But it's to short in the waist to be a good winter jacket. But I have my UK army shell jacket,
so suppose I can wear that obver this one if the weather gets tough.

Time will tell if it is weather proof. But will get a chance to test it as we have a couple of more storms on the way :-)

Been wanting a larger swiss knife, and the saw on these are suppose to be very good. Was really drooling at the wood handled Wenger Ranger Wood 55, whicj is the same knife. But it is more expensive, and hard to find in Norway.

This will be a fine addition to my kit, for when I become active in the Rescue organisation I just joined too. I do not think I want a belt knife for that. So this will be a more discreet option :-)
Then sapper has tipped me about another type of knife that is more rescue specific...but waiting until I am more settled in, and know that I will keep this up :-)

Dont be fooled by the "hardwoods" label Rune they are "plasticy" feeling scales not wood. It has the FSC logo on the box but then goes on to say....MIXED SOURCES. product group from well managed forests and recycled wood or fibre. I was so disappointed by my Cold Steel Hawk that I never even bothered finishing the refurb I had planned for it. Glad others are more happy. It was straight back to hatchets for me. Helikon sfu in coyote.
Really pleased so far; More sturdy than walking trousers, less heavy than work trousers/jeans. Really comfortable, and great pockets!
The only downsize is they are a bit long in the leg which, as they are quite a generous cut, means they drag in the mud. . no problem though I'll take them up an inch or so.

Well, I ordered a Wenger 79 last week, Today the package arrived in my mailbox, and I was quite happy. Until I opened it and found a Wenger 74 inside.
The latter is 30£ more expensive, so normally I would just have shut up and pocketed it )yup there is my little character flaw right there).

But there is no saw on the Wenger 74, and that saw is the whole reason I really bought it. The 74 do have pliers instead of the saw, but I got a better set of that on my Leatherman SUpertool III, that also has a saw. So this one goes back, provided they pay for postage :-)

Oh, the humanity. What we have to put up with! :guns:

Update: They are out of stock on the Wenger Ranger Grip 79. So they have offered to send me a Wenger Ranger 79 (the standard black one, without the rubber insets) + a return postage slip for the 74...hmmm

Update #2
They manage to find a Wenger Ranger Grip 178 instead. It's the model with one handed opening, saw, and a phillips head screw driver instead of the cork screw. I do not like wine anyway. :-)

The only let down is that the 178 has a serrated edge, but I can live with that. Was going to use this for when I am out on SAR in the future, if I ever quallify. so a knife that is good at cutting rope is probably the better option....besides the Wenger Ranger Grips have a ridicilously long ricasso, so the serrated edge is probably a better knife overall, than the straight edge versions. At least that is what I told myself before I accepted the offer. :happy-clapping:

Back to renw the siege around the mailbox.

Silva Ranger S mirror compass.
This one was completely unvolutarily. I was going for my first SAR training wich was basic use of map and compass + GPS, and they asked that I bring my own compass. And of course mine was gone from the "get-out-and have-a brew" bag. So it was a quick run to Clas Ohlson, and get whatever they had, which was this one. Good choice as it is what the rest of them had as well...hehe

Well, well, the old one did have a bubble problem under certain conditions anyway. But it was £20 that I could have used for something else. :confused2:
But okay, at least I have a pretty make-up mirror :-)

Hah!,
I've seen their ware house now. It is full of kit for lend. And they have told me not to invest in anything, at least not until I am sure this is the thing for me.
And yes, I do have everything. Unless I start to fall into SAR fashion items...

He looked at the web shop for the mother organisation. High visibility west...£15. High visibillity west with pockets...£60. I know wich one I'll get....the one they loan out to the noobs :-)

Anyway, going on my first thing with them next weekend. They are the medics for a large winter sport event, so I'll lend a hand. I do not have the official first aid course yet, so I'll be tehre to be lost, found, lost again, be in the way, get confused, and try to learn something while I make terrible tea for everyone so they never ask me to do it again...

But they will get to look over my kit, and tell me if I need anything, but tiold me if there is anything, they probably have some to lend me... :-)

Sp whatever I spend will be because I fall for some SAR community fashion... i.e, got to have a high visibility west with pockets!

Nice one. I have not used my wrist watch for years. The bars that held the armband kept breaking, so now in the end I got tired of replacing them every few months. It is a Citizen I bought in the Lebanon back in 1994, and still works fine.

Lately I have been starting to feel the "need" for a writswatch agian, so maybe one of these Timex things is the way back. Sure looks nice, and not in the super pricey department either. My very first watch was a Timex :-)

Wohoooo finally recieved my Wenger Ranger Grip 178. That is the model with a saw, a phillips head screwdriver instead of a cork screw and and a partially serrated knife blade + the usual can opener and flatehead screwdriver...

I like it so far, but have not cut anything with it yet. Perhaps I will review it for the forum when I have had it for a while. I am no fan of serrated blades, But okay, maybe nice to have one knife that is good at cutting ropes, as I will probably wear this when I am on duty for the SAR team...on duty, lol. I'll be making tea and answering the phone, no glory for me :-)

Anyways it's nice to have a larger SAK. With the blade extended it is larger than a Mora 711. And I have a vertical carry pouch that fits it perfectly :-)

Norwegian army NATO type wool sweater. I belive the UK army uses the same one.
I wore mine all trough national service and on 3 deployments overseas, then lost it. So nice to have one again :-)

Bought it mostly for the nostalgia, but also because they are nice and warm, and fit the climate here well :-)
Combine it with a thin fleece Norgie type shirt under it and you got your layers sorted.

The other Norwegian army sweater is to thick and warm to wear most of the time....

Anyway this type is what I got....and found it at the Salvation army charity shop for next to nothing :-)

I've still got my norgie shirt.... Awesome kit

I have a couple of those laying around too. But I have a couple n the same design in modern fleece material. Much better. The original army ones are cotton.
But yes, nice and warm when dry, but I have been frozen half to death, while standing in the standard NATO hate position while wearing them to many times....thats when you try to stand perfectly still in the middle of your clothes in the vain hope that your skin will not touch your soaking wet cloaths...our kit was really ridicilously bad back when I was in...except for a few items....and I do not count the Norgie ammong them. Actually most Norwegian soldiers can't fathom why the UK soldiers coming over here wanted them at all :-)

We wore them only because if we got caught wearing non standard issue kit, we would not get compensation for cold injuries, and the Norgie was the only uniform kit we had with a long neck....

In 1997... I bought a collection of Air Rifles from a woman whose Husband had passed and she wanted them outta the house., she was adamant on the price.'Not a penny more. not a penny less'.

So i handed over the cash and recieved......'about 8 telescopic sights, a bunch of pellets, a few bags, an ASI Paratrooper, Webley Hawk MKIII, BSA Airsporter, A sharp innova in .177, a webley junior air pistol, a webley tempest, 3 el gamo .22 rifles an original 45 all in MINT condition and about enough parts to make 3 or 4 Wheirauch HW 35s............the missus went loonytunes on me... when i told her i spent £250

Funny thing was, after checking and cleanin ( they were an inch of dust on em) them all, fixing up two of the HW35s and selling the lot for over £900 she suddenly wasnt so loonytunes.... so i took her out for a nice steak...and the next day bought a BMW K1OO motorcycle.

I was actually looking for a Leatherman Squirt P4, because I didn't want the PS4 and by accident stumbled upon this on the bay. An USAF 6545-01-534-0935 Cage 7S327 Survival Module for 44 € including p&p! I have to say that I am quite surprised by the value that I got for my money. The module was declared "opened" so I was sceptic at first but everything was more or less mint condition except for the mirror.

1x Leatherman Squirt P4
2x Laser Light Finger Points (1x Visible Red, 1x IR) - quite impressed by these little lights
2x Wetfire Tinder
10x Aquamira Waterpurifcation Tablets
10x Stormproof Matches in waterproof container
1x Sparky thing for Firelighting
1x UCME Tornado Whistle (dang that thing is friggn loud!)
1x Tiny Button Compass (which actually works!)
1x key for handcuffs (yeah...ok...nice to have)
1x starflash ultra signal mirror (which was unfortunately broken, read up on the internet that they do disassemble easily)
1x McNett Camo Cravat (The edges are cut rough as it is intended for bandaging. The textile is so strong that I put it on the sewing machine and put proper seams all aroung. Now it is a really neat triangular scarf/bandana-thing in ACU Camo.

Can't find much about this but bound this pdf on the internet "TECHNICAL MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROCUREMENT, ISSUE, USE AND MAINTENANCE OF MEDICAL KITS" which explains the purpose of this kit like follows:

" NSN 6545-01-534-0935, SURVIVAL MODULE
-
3.5.1 Purpose.
The module provides first aid and survival items for Airman to treat injuries sustained in the line of duty
and aid in operations where military personnel and other selected individuals are enabled to emerge from an enemy-held or

Recently visited Caerleon remains of Roman fort near Usk and could not resist buying this replica oil lamp.

Oh, thank you very much. A great inspiration for my next 3d printed ceramics project. Now time for research.

Does anyone know anything about this brand. On the age old premise that it's steel and it's made in sheffield I just bought this. This and that it has a hickory handle, which also seems to be another sign of quality:

http://www.oldtools.co.uk/en/home/957-ridgway-gouge-adze.html

13239

It looks like it will need sharpening, and at sometime when I can be bothered, a bit of paint stripper.

I haven't received it yet and wondering if anyone knows anything about it/the company?

Edit: I just noticed the image doesn't display as large as it actually is. The wording says on the head:

"RIDGEWAY Carvers Adze Hand Forged In Sheffield"

And on the shaft:

"*680, RIDGEWAY, Est. 1878, Sheffield England, Hickory".

I'm assuming the *680 is the type of steel, the first digit (the *) is mostly worn off, it could be a 5, 6, 8 or a 9.

Magicdave
01-05-2015, 06:12 PM
By the way, If you happen to know that it's is a duffer don't hold back in telling me. The blue paint did put me off at first, but I don't think it is as I was taught all the little clues for identifying quality second hand chisels. I put a similar train of thought into this. I think the price was good, and I'm sure at the very least it'll do me for a while as I build my tool kit.

28 year old 2 man tunnel (from my Doe!)
Proaction hike lite 1 man
Yellowstone matterhorn 1 man (only bought to have a side entrance tent on the cheap!)
2 man dome tent (supermarket £5, probably for just kit storing)
Hammock & tarp
Pro action 6 man (only one wife uses lol)

There's a simple formula for calculating the amount of bushcraft related kit you need (whether it's tents, knives, rucksacks, smocks etc).

It's N+1 where is the number you already have. Simple. :happy-clapping:

Haha I like your thinking! The "it's only 1 more" has been working so far..... Though another good one I use is quietly adding things to my haul (either hiding it with them or when deliveries come unnoticed) because when it's there it means I've always had it! If questioned the response is "I've had it for ages just never used it"

My new purchase Muurikka-Leisku,

After seeing one in action I had to have one, folds up and there fore takes up less room than my black iron frying pan.
Here it is in action with my Muurikka 3ltr campfire kettle.

Could not find my "guksi" so I grebbed one from the local supermarket. Mine is without the flag.
Also some noodles, energy bars, instant hot chockolate and instant soups for the SAR grab pack.
Large excercice next week involving the local Rescue Dog handler asscociation, Norwegian Peoples aid, The Red Cross Rescue Services, The Police and the Coast Guard.
We'll be doing urban and beach search ops, and we are required to bring food for the first 24 hrs as per SOP. So need something I can just
soak in hot water and get down me neck fast when an oportunity comes allong, or just eat out of my pockets.http://eagleproducts.no/treartikler/kopper_krus_i_tre/content_1/filelist_74b0b6a8-41f7-4021-8a00-2a6e026e6761/1395325482272/lw326_sj_en.jpg

The ammount of kit that goes AWOL in this house

So had to get a new 320z Nalgene bottle as well...I guess it's time to clean up that shed, take stock and see what else needs replacement, fixing or has gone AWOL during the winter...
things have sort of migrated to everywhere but where they are supposed to be...

Fishy I know that feeling when I cannot find what I am looking for and when I go to my garage its a nightmare as its full of bushcraft stuff, fishing stuff, purse nets, long nets, snares and what ever kit I had left over from when I was in the army, also what ever else I find to put in there.

Decided to grab a bit of a luxury item. Been thinking about getting one for a while after trying many other lighter chairs and them being crap in one way or another. Webtogs were doing them for £70 (Usually 80+) so pulled trigger. I did look for same OEM design on Aliexpress hoping to save a bit but couldn't find same design so went for the branded.

Alite Mayfly 2.0 ('https://www.webtogs.com/en-UK/Alite-Mayfly-Trek-Chair/32543wmp.htm?colour=Black')

Has anybody here used/using one of these? Seem to be very comfy judging from people have said.

Comparison between the three I was considering...

Is it the one that weighs just over a pound in weight and you can strap it to your pack.

Bought one of those on the forum not long back. Great little stove. They seem to have more oomph than the Trangia burner and sounds like a gas ring when on full burn.

Ordered me a new boat!HERE (http://www.gumotex.co.uk/inflatable-canoe-palava-1)
The idea is to be able to chuck it in the van for more distant locations when not on a canoeing specific holiday :), it can be paddled both tandem and solo.

It has good reviews and able to take on Grade three white water....(some say four but I won't, I have a specific boat for that)

The local COOP supermarket was running a 50% discount on a Helly Hansen Loke shell jacket. Can't believe how light and packable it is. Got it for my SAR pack, and large enoutgh to fit over my Soft-shell jacket or a thick fleece, and yet it packs down into it's own pocket :-) http://shop.hellyhansen.com/gb/item/loke-jacket-62252/?t_type=src&COLOR=226%20BRIGHT%20ORANGE&t_type=cat

Also went into the salvation army shop, and came out with a brand new, still with it's tags on, Eagle Products 60 litre backpack. That will be my new SAR pack. I used a 40 litre pack during the excercise last weekend, and that turned out to small, as they loaded a 20 litre medic bag on top of it :-). So 40 litres fro personal gear, and the extra 20 for extras I may have to carry....if not I'll break out the 125 litre Norrønna Recon pack thats is in the shed, haha

Last, found a replacement Eagle Products frying pan..the original one has gone AWOL. Okay, off to transfer my SAR kit into the new pack.

I lashed out on some miendl Bhutan boots a little while back. I've never spent that kind of cash on boots before, but I've just spent a week in Scotland and they've been incredible. up mountains, in boggy marshes, coastal, forest, you name it . I was in them up to 15 hours a day and my feet were not tired, sore, not even damp. I reckon they've earned their keep already.

The army had me playing with radios, and since then I have been working with them, and most likely will again if I get the kind of work I am after once my degree is in place.
And when I participated in that SAR excercise the other day, I also handle comms. That was probably like an old circus horse smelling saw dust, as now I have ordered a couple of cheap chinese VHF/UHF dual band radios, and enlisted in a HAM course to get a licence so that I can TX legally with them. Plenty of repeaters to trigger in the area. I could always only use them on licence free frequencies, but that would be boring, asthats where all the toy radios are are, so I imagine they are full of kids..

Anyway, it's been 25 years since I went trough the theory in the army, so nice with a refresh :-)

Just got a proaction tiger paws 1 man tent off ebay.

I have the newer (& very orange!) version the hike lite. Absolutely love it & a steal when I got it for £15 in the argos sale.

Not been able to find anything as good, on a budget, as these. They regularly sell for £50 used however the tiger paws I bought today is apparently brand new & a steal at £16 delivered!

Hope it comes when the wife's at work 😂😂😂

ALways nice to have som line. I just got some avalance cord from the SAR depot. It's a nylon tape with arrows pointing in one direction and the idea is that you tie it around your waist when
crossing avalanche prone terrain. If you get hit and burried, some of the line will stay above the snow and the rescue crew can follow them to dig you out. But it's strong stuff so the SAR team use them for all sorts of stuff. Anyway, nice to have a length of that in my SAR pack :-)

hello,
Thanks for the reply Rune. Yes I've seen that line to which you refer for SAR use. Got a trade off with a few feet of this with another Bushcrafter for use with a Basha. The remainder cord hanks are for various other uses & guy lines nearly gone. BTW I love your Norway flag embossed Kuksa.

David

I have a similar one. Mine fits a my wood gas stove, GSI kettle and kuksa in the main compartment, and inside the kettle I got tea, sugar, barbecue spice and pepper + some instant soups and cocoa.
Mine has a bottle holder/pocket on the side that sits a 0.5 liter Camelbak bottle perfectly. On the other side there is a pocket where I keep my hi-tech fire kit in a small water prrof bag. Behind this there is perfect space for my knife secured with a carbine. Front lid pocket holds my FAK. The zippered pocket behind the main room contains map, compass and whistle. There is a pocket on the sling that is perfect for my leatherman tool. I keep my leuku under the lid secured with another carbine. , and sometimes my littlle wetterlings axe(and or forlding saw.

It's the bag I use the most, and it's been my get out for a walk bag for 3 years now, always packed, always hanging in the hallway, ready to grab and go whenever I feel the urge :-)
