The army had me playing with radios, and since then I have been working with them, and most likely will again if I get the kind of work I am after once my degree is in place.
And when I participated in that SAR excercise the other day, I also handle comms. That was probably like an old circus horse smelling saw dust, as now I have ordered a couple of cheap chinese VHF/UHF dual band radios, and enlisted in a HAM course to get a licence so that I can TX legally with them. Plenty of repeaters to trigger in the area. I could always only use them on licence free frequencies, but that would be boring, asthats where all the toy radios are are, so I imagine they are full of kids..

Anyway, it's been 25 years since I went trough the theory in the army, so nice with a refresh :-)

And a gift to myself. Found that Dartmoor is not favourable pitching for a Luxe Silpeak due to the uneven ground and full mesh inner making for some very breezy and cold nights during the winter months. The sides of the tent do not lay flat so the whole shape goes very wrong. This means that the air flow is pretty phenomenal and your nose freezes. Of course choosing a flatter area would be a better idea but when you are taking teams out for Ten Tors training the best spots go to the young folk.

So a new tent was in order with cost playing a part this time round. Whilst attending the annual Gilwell Reunion event last weekend, an international Scout Leaders get together and excuse for really letting your hair down, there was a display of tents from Terra Nova Wild Country and Vango. Having owned a Wild Country Zephyros 1 in the past I know these tents are well made and up to the job, I just found the Zephyros too small for my liking. It turns out that as it was the end of the season all the display tents were being sold off at a discounted price. I even blagged another £10 off for taking the tent down myself so I managed to get an immaculate Wild Country Coshee 2 for £80, not even a speck of dirt or footprint within the inner.

A bit of a weight penalty compared to the Luxe with walking pole setup but comfort won the day.

Got one myself Tim, They're awesome!

It even goes in my lightweight kit as a luxury item. Tried all sorts of chairs from sit pads to stools etc and they are good for short periods but if chilling out for long periods they get on my nerves. The Mayfly is really comfy and has back support. Only problem though is getting in and out as it's low to ground but I just try and pack everything I need around me lol.

After a week in Scotland I can agree, a little close to the ground, so you do have to shift rocks and debris away from your bum area, but still a great addition to the luxury items.

I priced these in nearby stores rrp £17.99p each, Whoo Hoo.. Had a browse elsewhere price check & lowest per Light My Fire Swedish firesteel army was £16.99p each. I've shared a few with Bushcrafters in the UK & going onto the trade blanket State Side. http://www.lightmyfire.com/

hello,
Wilco stores UK heads up :p if your interested in these mini credit card sized survival tools aka Gizmo Man Card Tool catalogue no : 0418265. I was browsing through the end of season sale & came across these mini tools for £3.00. They come in a blue plastic sealed cardboard packet with Wilco logo. I had the store assistant scan the barcode & it came up as 25p :confused2: so I bought 4 of these £1.00 worth. I've used one on a course many years ago in which I made feather fire sticks, used the edge for striking my ferro rod & the honed blade for skinning a Rabbit. I kept it in my grab bag until I loaned it out.. for 25p I'm sure I'll find a use for another Bushcraft 'shiny thing' in my pocket or EDC kit bag. It's a can opener, knife, slotted screwdriver, ruler, bottle opener, hex wrench, serrated edge, *improvised direction helper when magnetised, *The original Survival aids UK (Morland Penrith) version was magnetised, wrench, key ring lanyard hole. It can also be used as a signalling device both sides are polished. I have seen this as a mini axe head tool too  others are going onto the trade blanket.

David

Nice! Ive got the older model and find it a bit errr sweaty! love it and its tough as hell but definitely not for being very active in. can you do us a review of this new one mate?

A belated review as I've not really worn the jacket much. I thought that this item would be a good one to pack prior to heading up to Scotland for a week. We'd decided we would head up the Pap of Glencoe (route linked below - Strava). As this is a stalking jacket, I had previously been thrown out of ASDA by security when attempting to stalk Mrs Trellis from across the road and have since concluded that due to its colour, this jacket is unsuitable for stalking in an urban environment. :happy-clapping:

https://www.strava.com/activities/421438012

Back to Scotland and the walk. Within two miles I was too hot and packed the jacket into my rucksack, leaving me in a tshirt and Norwegian top, which for most of the climb was perfect. Nearer the saddle, the wind was stronger so back on with the jacket. Once on top of the Pap, the wind was gusting up to about 50mph and with the hood up, I couldn't feel a thing. I kept it on during the decent and again, it was just right. With the side zip open there was sufficient ventilation so I didn't end up feeling like a boil in the bag meal. We stopped near the end of last steep section and this is where I took a tumble. I caught my foot on a rock and stumbled. On the flat no problem, but the path ran next to a 10 foot slop of fist sized rocks and I went over this sideways. My rucksack took most of the impact and I had a slight bang on my right elbow but the jacket was unmarked. On inspection later, the Co-Op cheese and onion slices in the rucksack hadn't faired as well. I'd definitely been a lucky boy.

I've yet to use the jacket for a prolonged period in heavy rain but I don't think it will be long before I can report back on its performance in said conditions. I shall certainly let you know.

The view from the top.

I was handed a goody bag this week full of EDC kit bag fillers to use or GAW at my own discretion, lo & behold includes a couple of 7057-T6 Aircraft Alloy Alpha Lite sporks http://www.seatosummit.com.au/ I'm well pleased (that's an understatement) :o the bag given to me for my endeavours, included a few more LMF Army 2.0 firesteel & a couple of Life Systems Orange plastic safety whistles along with 1 Karrimor Mountain Whistle Silver & to name but a few of the smaller items. I've added an image of the Spork. I've been really busy over the last month collecting & supporting Armistice Day/Poppy Scotland as well as Shelter (Scotland) supporting Veterans on the streets with sometime in between for Bushcraft.

Good price, I've a Coleman 413G, pretty much the same but mines older (1960's), of course you'll now need is a Coleman folding oven :)

Try not to run it on petrol, the additives tend to clog them up, stick to fuel like Aspen 4T or panel wipe.

Bought myself a Council Tool Hudson Bay "camp axe" (really a boy's axe) - 26 inch/66 cm helve...not the Velvicut version. The head weighs 1.75 lb/0.8 kg, and I feel the balance is better on a longer helve than the Velvicut (same head weight), which is 18 inches/20 cm.
Will be a companion to my others for trail work :).

Being gifted a one of these: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/guide-gear-backpacking-teepee-tent?a=1677985

The price mark-down makes them quite appealing. :)
For quite some time I've been looking to acquire a tipi backpacking tent that wasn't too large nor too heavy. It says the weight here is 7 lbs/ a little over 3 kg, though one can simply replace the steel ridgepole with a trekking pole or a fashioned stave, and limit the mosquito netting and floor to spring and summer. Using the fly alone would cut down the weight significantly.

great bag. I've had the 30 litre version with the 10 litre pockets for a couple of years now. bombproof it is. I use the main pack every day and with the side pockets it will do me for a weekender. I sometimes wish I'd got the 45 when it's really cold but it would have been too big for my daily use.

I hope so Pootle. I'm hoping the side pockets on straps will be useful for bumbling about.

They are in theory but never used them like that.
word of warning though, I found the bag took a bit of breaking in. The straps are quite stiff and can get a bit sore if you're in them all day straight away. They will get comfier though.

That's a sound bit of advice, thanks. I had planned short hauls with lots of weight to start with, and then progress to having it on longer with less load (in other words: will not venture to far as I'm inexperienced and will have too much kit, then as I learn I will go further out with less kit because I have worked what I really need and I will probably end up buying things to replace parts of my kit to make it lighter LOL :ashamed:)

I bought the pack from shop-outdoors, it was apparantly the 2016 variety. When I asked the vendor they said that the straps have been improved (stronger, softer or what, I do not know). Also they are not able to get the bags direct from Berghaus as they have done in the past, it now comes from a distributer in Europe (again details on this is sketchy). All in all this seems to make the bag a little more expensive than it's predecessor, but I thought I will only be wondering if the straps were better if I had not gotten the newer one.
Besides after a few emails with the shop, I felt more at ease that I was buying from a reliable vendor. I'm still at the mercy of parcelforce48 for waiting on this. Dispatched the 9th but there are no signs of them delivering.

Sharpened my bushy with it and it's scary sharp now!
My old DMT diamond dual is rubbish compared to this...

Very pleased with it indeed...
Mirror finish on .
Block plane and chisels next on sharpening list...
Also making a storage/transport box for the sharpening kit et all...

I bought myself a rab sil-tarp 2 as I realised it is roughly half the size and weight when packed as the dd 3x3. I need to seam seal it first. It's rather nifty. I have a pic of the two lying side by side although I can't get it uploaded for some reason. I also bought myself the tbs boar and the snugpak special forces bivi bag to go with my snugpak kestrel sleeping bag. It's crazy how the money goes and you reply to your partner with the old I have shown you that already have I not when quizzed about shiny new gear.

Ouch at the price though. I have the DD superlight tarp but comes in slightly heavier by about 70 grams. Would be interesting to know the pack size as the DD is definitely a pocket size package.

hunnersahings
12-04-2016, 06:41 AM
The pack size is 20x10cm. It fits in the top zip pocket on my highlander pro forces 44 rucksack which is quite good as I don't bees to open up my bag to get a shelter up. What size is the superlight tarp? I never knew dd done such a thing. Yeah it was expensive. Double the price of my dd tarp. How much did yours cost?

jus_young
12-04-2016, 07:09 AM
The DD is nigh on a 3x3 if I remember rightly, one side might be a little shorter. The tarp on its own is about £65 but mine was bought as part of a package with the superlight hammock and bug net. Lovely setup that is.

What's it like sleeping in a hammock? I have had my eye on a dd hammock for about a year or so. The dd kit is well priced and we'll built. I think I need to do a bit of ground dwelling for the time being to get use out of the snugpak bivi bag I recently bought. What rucksack do you use? I have the highlander one mentioned. It's ok but I think I could do with more pockets or better side pockets.

Best sleep ever if set up correctly with the right insulation. Pack wise, I have several but my favourite is the Osprey Exos 46 which has recently been upgraded by the manufacturer.

I got the larger version of that Lixada stove about 6 weeks ago, been really pleased with it. Can get a decent fire with some reasonably large branches, and hang a billy over it. Only bit I don't like is the pot stand, as it's easiest to load from the top. It's warped a bit with the heat, but not enough to cause problems.

hello,
Not actually bought.. I raised a complaint with the manufacturer of walking shoes this week after receiving a pair of walking shoes (received as a gift). The laces that were already laced up inside the shoes, the laces one was shorter than the other & the 2nd was badly damaged shrivelled up looked like it had been damaged by heat of some sorts? I didn't receive spare laces but a roll of the same coloured paracord used for the laces free of charge. There must be over 5 meters of the cord. I'm good, so the remainder of the cord I'll put to good use for Bushcraft purposes might create some knots lanyards etc..

I purchased a new chair.

The specifications from Amazon are:-

Specification:
Size(Folding): 56 x 60.5 65.5cm
Storage Pouch: 35 x 13 x 9cm
Color: Blue/Orange/Red/Dark Blue

It will seat up to 100kg (within that [currently]) and it weighs about just over half a bag of sugar (500g roughly).

13682
13683
13684
13685

The best bit is, when I tried to get the dog to sit in it (the only model available currently), he slid out! So, he's not going to steal my chair again! :happy-clapping:

I suspect the legs will sink in on soft ground, but I can make some pads to avoid that or use other people's coffee mugs to slide over the legs.

The ruler was set to 40cm.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160526/0f7820b0628cd2c509398cc844e8da81.jpg

I got the stove going in no time , got the ember on some dried birch bark paper , dry twigs and larch cones.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160526/d5689d42bec7e35c283445a1b88f8ec6.jpg

I made all 4 hot chocolates out of one load...

The kettle is awesome, sturdy and light, the vented lid sits perfectly on and the handle has a very good snapping lock.

The milk reached boiling point at just over 5 minutes... so very impressed with that.
The handle did not get hot, and the stove performed as well as the kettle!

The kettle has measurements in 4oz increments...
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160527/e6b6a28e23c0e06299236b93c5ed217b.jpg

Also , the kettle fits inside the IKEA stove nicely.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160527/558fe3989f90139564769e6c79bc5207.jpg

Sizes:
kettle is 100mm wide by 150mm tall

Cups (each):
90mm x 90mm
( outside measurement)

75mm wide x 80 mm tall
(inside measurement)

Chuffed as the kettle was only £15 from sports direct... Thank you for the tip off Humakt!!

(Link and thread here:
http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=133602)

And the stove was bought for 99 pence from the charity shop a while back.
[emoji106]

Now I need to make a drawstring leather bag to fit it all in.

Stop me!
Please!

Ok so I went to pick up some milk and bread at the supermarket...which is next to the new XXL superstore...4000 square meters of outdoors and sports gear that just opened in my town.
And I won 20£ in Lotto last weekend so I was in the plus!

And there it was, on the wall of knives and axes...the Øyo Viking Axe, 19.90£ on sale from 35£...MINE!, only MINE!!!!!

ANyway, the handles on these are rubbish, but sifting trough what was there I found one that had grain going from end to end, so I took that one.
It is sharpish, not the scary sharp you get from a Wetterlings or an Gränsfors bruk axe. This is after all just a mass produced tourist souvenir really.
But it looks like it will split wood far better than any knife, and in size and weight not much bigger than my Leuku.

I do however feel that my little wetterlings hatchet will be the one I take out, so I just may give thios one some love with some linseed oil, and
hide it in a drawer until the runt is old enough to have a go with it.

NO, NO chance, this thing is DANGEROUS....the force you have to use because of the useless grind, makes it dangerous for unexperienced users.

But been wanting one for years. After all, it says "viking axe" on the box. Comes with a drawstring axe max...

I'll hang it on the wall, and leave it there.

Anyway, these guys tells what it is.

They have everything a modern hobby bushcrafter can wish for, from first aid kits to 30-06 hunting rifles. Fishing gear, all the Norwegian knives, axes, bows, tents, tarps all the most popular gas and multifuel stoves, clothes, sleeping bags, GPS, maps, compasses, horse and dog stuff, bicycles, everything! And all sold at internett prices. The seller today told me that if you find anything we sell on the internet cheaper from a Norwegian outlet, we will match the price. There is simply no need to pay for postage anymore. I will just check prices online before I buy at this place. :-)

hello Woody,
This might interest you http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?9235-Stanley-pot-mod I've seen a similar set up recently, using what looked like silver galvanised wire, couldn't have been thicker than 3mm (resembled brake cord)? made with adjustable wire rope grips, slightly Heath Robinson but it did work.. :p

But I am doing my exam in Scientific Research metod right now...a one week slog trough research design, statistics, and analyses...doing the statistics part now, so back to explaining what a type I and a Type II error is...luckily the exam is classedas a home exam, with all available sources allowed. Time to ressurect this old thread me thinks...
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160812/d40a389ded5f74e1bb86c9b81ba06ce1.jpg

I realised that woody jr. (And his sister) have been playing a lot more with fire these days... supervised of course!

And as they both now have their little FSK each (available only under supervision...) we will be practising primitive and natural fire lighting skills as level2 on this subject.

Very kindly, David-Jafo gifted us with quite a selection on natural tinders, carbon steel strikers and marcasite as well as iron pyrite and ferrocium rods a few months back... Which I personally can't wait to start playing with!!!
So now 2 weeks off work and some time to hone skills , play and camp out has finally come!!!

...And so, I decided to buy this , as my normal FAK lacked some of these items...
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160813/5091d47d702ccb319a81a3ab4adec25f.jpg

A bit of fire awareness and safety talks have had a great effect on them as well as the fun and excitement of starting natural tinders with steel and flint or a fresnel lense....

Rather than ordering it all separate from Evilbay or Big River trading, which would be a pain, I ordered ( a standard burns 1st aid kit) straight from St.Johns ambulance in one neat package just over £20 ! Whilst at the same time supporting their charity...

I am qualified first aid (L3) and have renewed and updated courses every 3 years for the last 12.
and it's just nice to have all of the gear to hand just in case ...

Is this prepping? Sure .

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail, as someone said before...

That's my excuse anyway....
;)

T^ HAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! I have landed the gold mine.... :jumping-joy:
It cost me $150, but I landed a vintage US made crosscut saw (with the original handles) and in very good condition It's almost as if the saw was used a few times and then put away. It has some surface rust, but that's about it...can't wait to see what the patina looks like. My supervisor, who restores and maintains crosscuts himself, gave it a two thumbs up :D. I don't have pictures as of yet, but I'll get around to that next week. ;)

Just made the coup of the year, and it will last me a lifetime if I play my cards right, *evil grin*

Just picked up a pair of Norwegian army M-77 combat boots for next to nothing at the local charity shop.
Now these are sold on the civillian market as well, for a princely sum. To much for me as I have a pair or two of perfectly good boots,
so getting a pair of M-77 have been on the back burner as my "next" pair of boots.

But what makes the pair I purchased now stand out however, is the brand carved into the underside, which not only marks them as
original M-77 boots, but it also marks thamas made for the army. Which means that anyone still in uniform can walk into an army depot
and have them replaced by a new pair when the old ones are worn out. So as long as I know somebody still in the service, I will have
free boots :happy-clapping:

Han having done my time for King and Country, I do not have an inch of bad concience over it :-)

Not yet, these where just about walked in, soft and nice, while new ones are stiff as concrete and a nightmare to get walked in. In the army the lads where desperate if issued a brand new pair. But we normally where issued two pairs. One brand new, that where worn with the "Christmass tree" (the unifom with all the medals and bling) only, and kept spit polished at all times. Perhaps just worn on base for a few days to get the worst of the stiffness out. And the other pair, well worn, soft and nice, and comfy for everyday use.

But once the soles are worn out (happens in a couple of years as they are so soft, to be slippery proof), I can get some friend to change them into a new slightly worn pair :-)

Much better now. The problem now is fatigue, but out walking every morning as I walk the runt to school. So that gives me about a km, with lots of up-hill.
Going to extend it by walking the forest home, once I am sure I can do it.

It's bush craft kit in my book. A stove like that is the only option in the mountains here in winter. And knowing what kit you need to survive or thrive out there, and knowing when to use it, and not least how, including how to fix it is certainly bushcraft. It's not all sticks and stones.

TAD 5.0 softshell jacket.

My old green TAD 4.0 jacket is just as fine as it was, I'm just getting another color, Coffee brown is more civy looking than Army green. :-)
Got tired of questions if i was working in the forces, as the army recently adopted a similar designed soft shell jacket...
So this will be my everyday jacket, and my old green one I'll use for when in the forrest. That way I have one that I do not have to worry if it smells like a forrest fire.

Solo Scientific Aurora Firesteel. I will be often going close to the sea so I picked this one to cover it from salt. Plus it can be used on its own, having its own striking blade. Not to mention I just love the design. I don't know if SS is the original producer cause I've seen different companies doing that fire steel which means some of them must be fake. Im not much of a gear freak anyways, if it works then it works :)
Also, Rite in the Rain notebook, but I don't think there is something better/worse to pick from. Just a notebook, right?

The wife recently bought a very nice, thick fleece jacket for herself, me and runt for 9£ each at the Jula store...think the Liedl of hardware stores, lol
Anyway they are isanely warm. The runt fell asleep on the sofa this evening, so I put mine over him as a blanket. And when I later carried him to bed, he was sweating like piglet over i a fire :-)

Got that Tad 5 softshell jacket today. And the color made all the diffence. My old Tad 4 was millitary green, and the army uses a similar designed jacket. And
that made me feel self concious wearing it in public for some reason. But this one is a dark brown so I do not have that issue. It is silly really. But the old one is still in good condition and
is now my designated fishing jacket, as that is a situation where I do not care much what I am wearing.

Mora and Helle uses the same steel in many of the knives, so that will be perfectly fine. The extra you pay for in a Helle are just looks and brand name really.

On the Telemark backpack....do you mean the one from Bergans? The answer depends on what model and size you want I guess, but Bergans backpacks are very common here.

I went in to town to buy a new frying pan for my Trangia 27 Storm kitchen as the non-stuck pan that came with it when I bought the set for £4,50 at the local Salvation Army charity shop last year,
was completely worn out down to the bare metal....not healthy to use.

And came out of the XXL store with an Optimus Nova mulitifuel stove with a conversion kit that allows me to take off the burner unit, and use it in my Trangia kitchen :-)

Tried it today and will make a separate post with pictures etc later tonight.

Anyway I wanted a beter stove than the alcohol burner for the trangia kit for a long time. Trangia makes a multifuel burner for it. Rhat cost 1399NOK. And the Optimus NOVA cost 1299NOK.
The conversion kit was 59 NOK, and is made by Trangia for the Optimus Nova and the Optimus Nova + :-)

It was a simple task of unscrewing the burner unit, and disconnect the hose and controll valve spindle with thge supplied multi-tool from the burner, and then install the conversion kit. (3 minute job including some faffing).

The burner itself boiled a 1 litre in 5 minutes on charcoal ligher fluid, with a clean burn.

Simmer controll is not up to Optimus 111 standards, but is workable. Allso very light weight and small package, and came with an excellent pouch with pockets for all the extras inside.
Cant be used with gas canisters, but I have burners for those, so if that is my option I'll just bring one of those.

Oh and it also came with a nice aluminium wind screen :-)

FishyFolk

After buying that stove, ther ewas still a few coins at the bottom of the jar, so I went on Ebay in ordered som extra molle pouches for the new backpack.
1. A radio pouch for my VHF radio. Got a set of VHF radios last year for coms between home and when I am in the boat. Started to bring it into the hills as well.
2. A pouch for my 32oz nalgene bottle and ollicamp cup.
3. A pouch for the fuel bottle for the stove, so I don't have to carry that inside the backpack. That way if it leaks, it wont go into my food/kit.
4. another magazine throw pouch, come possibles pouch. I love these and only cost 5£. They have a draw string opening and I keep them on my belt or attach them to my go bag, and us ethem for collecting stuff I find on my way, like tinders, quartz for fire making, berries to munch on, or to add to my whatever I cook etc.
and finally a foldable wind screen for the new stove, as I did not like the one they supplied with the Optimus Nova. The wind simply blew it away, and that simply won't do. But I may utilize the Nova windscreen in the new alcohol stove that I intend to use with my GI Canteen set.

I am crazy...

These to hang my tarp from a ridge line:

14058

These to fold the tarp ends together to make a cosy tent shape.

14060

The little ridgeline clips worked a treat.

The tarp clips did too. I used them to pinch the inside of the tarp together. I also discovered another use for them. I had a ridge line running under the tarp, just above my hammock, over which I hung a wool blanket that was draped either side of my hammock. The tarp clips held the blanket to the ridge line so the blanket would remain in place.

A Daiwa Black Widow G50 12' 3lb fishing rod
a Shimano Baitrunner ST 10000 RB reel....

Going after the halibut , and if I like this rod and reel, I may get another for a pair.

I bought one of these. I've decided that this time of year, I don't want to be getting up and messing around getting a fire going before I can put the kettle on.

Don't use petrol in it, the additives will block it up. Look on ebay for Panel Wipe https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PANEL-WIPE-5L-DEGREASER-SILICONE-REMOVER-BY-TETROSYL-5-LITRES/163183182031?epid=18017015854&hash=item25fe79c0cf:g:vgYAAOSwlQ5bZEqD:rk:11:pf:0

burns clean and 5l is a lot of cooking time on a Coleman stove or lantern.

ALTBERG BROWN LEATHER DEFENDER COMBAT BOOTS - Size: 15 Wide , British Army NEW

I have dainty feet. These are a gift for my helpful brother-in-law who struggles to find footwear that actually fits him. I'm hoping that these will accommodate his feet AND a thick pair of socks too. I still cannot believe how damn big these boots are!
