The reviews and specs seem to suggest a quality unit. Only accurate to 15m, but that's good enough for my needs. Was going to go for the GPS 300, but that couldn't store as many waypoints or POIs, plus this one can be connected directly to a PC for programming, where the 300 can't. Will give it a good shake down when it arrives.

I've always used "map n magnet" before too, but after watching Martin play with his GPS at the weekend, I thought it may be a good idea for vast open moorland (especially fog bound), dense forrest and snowy peaks. Just to double check current position. Also, when programmed with waypoints before hand, it saves refolding a map or buying multiple maps for those rarely travelled regions.

I'd never go into open countryside without a map and compass Robb. However, with the gps, I can pinpoint my exact position instantly and then check that position on the map. It means I spend more time enjoying the surroundings than studying the map.
That said, you are quite right Robb. There is absolutely no substitute for a map, compass and the knowledge of how to use them properly. You'd be amazed at the number of people who don't know what to do with them.

Ahhh, if it's the B&Q felling axe (normally black) they are great steel and take/hold a good edge. I had the small B&Q hatchet, but did the same as you, polished off the black, wire wooled the varnish off, and oiled the handle instead.

T^well i have used millbank bags in the past, and still prefer them today over modern water filters, simple to use and nothing much to get wrong!
as for basha, the dpm military issue is as good as i have found, they have ample suspension points, waterproof seam, and as a bonus the grab handles down the side and the centre seam allow it to be used as an emergency stretcher, i always carry one with me when taking the young people i work with on hikes/outdoor activities, and its big enough to use as an impromptu bothy if the weather suddenly catches you out, have got four people in one before now.
the danner boots are a replacement for my well worn matterhorns, i hear the SBS love danners, so they should be bloddy good, tough without the weight of some boots.

If it does the job then it'll do for me lol. Have worn the adventuretec fleece a couple times now, and like you say, the sizing is a little on the tight side. It's a large, but the cuffs on the sleeves are so tight you can only just get your hand through them. Rolling them up is completely out of the question. May have to adapt them slightly with some sew on velcro tabs...

I've got the Travel Tap from Drink Safe Systems. I love the simplicity of it but I am disappointed at the flow rate. When trying to fill containers with it, you seem to spend a lot of time and effort squeezing water through for minimal results.
Verdict; a good product but not 'The' solution to water filtration and purification. On my last trip to Dartmoor, where admitedly the water is very clean anyway, I used ClO2 tablets along with neutralising tablets and I found these to be superior in pretty much every way to the Travel Tap. It may be just me but I couldn't taste the chlorine tablets in the water, and I can only assume that they have come a long way from the chlorine tablets of old.
Would be interested in your experience of this system.

In fairness Adam, I don't think the neutralising tablets actually kill the taste, they neutralise the chlorine, thus stopping them from disinfecting your stomach. Obviously, we need the bugs and microbes in our gut to help us digest our food, and killing them with chlorine is not a great idea.

Phew, have just been reading up on all the scientific test into sodium dichloroisocyanurate, and all I could find was it has less (if any) taste/smell than regular chlorine. All research states it is a safe and effective form of water purification (something to do with the controlled release of the chemical creating safe amounts of "free chlorine"), so I won't be needing that stomach pump after all. :)

Nicely sized, and great technical specs. I've been temporarily blinded by the center "double power" LED already...
LED Type : 1 DoublePower, 4 SinglePower (2 white, 2 red)
Lumens : 75
Max Distances : 70 m (DoublePower LED); 15 m (2 SinglePower LEDs)
Max Burn Time : 200 H (DoublePower LED); 250 H (2 SinglePower LEDs)
Batteries : 3 AAA included
Weight Without Batteries : 54 g (1.9 oz)

Vango Halo 300; http://www.vango.co.uk/tents/halo-300.html - I have been needing a new tent for a while. After a lot of consideration I desided on this one. Haglöfs waterproof Toilet Paper Pouch; http://www.haglofs.com/en-US/products/backpacksbags/accessories/unisex/toilet_paper_pouch_en-us.aspx - laugh as you may, but as I always carry toilet paper intended for chemical toilets on the trail, bacuse this paper dissolves a lot quicker in water/damp soil than regular toilet paper (LNT again!), I have learned the hard way to make sure the roll doesn't get wet (it is difficult to wipe yourself with a handfull of watery pulp).

not easier just lighting the used paper on fire?
That is not legal here in Denmark - and because a lot of our nature are spruce forests, bogs and moors, it is not safe either.

Trangia simmering ring, Trangia rubber (sealing) rings x 2, 25L plastic jerry can (water container) and strangely enough, some chemical toilet (rapid dissolving) paper. Unlike Jakob I brought these for use with a chemical toilet, as I am hosting a small meet and pit latrines/long drops aren't suitable for the location.

Ya, I know, don't plan to drop it off a boat, only have the option of using it in the rain if need be, but more likely to have beer spilled on it. ;) At least the one I got has the full rubber keyboard, but is a pain to type on.

Agreed, my buddy Steve Wilson (introduced him here) is a survivalist type, and since he's enjoyed this place enough, I saw on a recent thread of his on Airsoft Canada, he's softened up bit and is less SHTF type and more feeling the natural bushcraft mentality, which is good, bushcraft is less alarmistic than survivalist title, enjoyment of the earth vs "the government is against us, stock up on ammo! Of course, he isn't really that way anyways (to a point), but does seem to really enjoy comparing notes between here and there.......... because bushcraft is lightweight survival skills, back to basics survival techniques and mentality. Is why I introduced this site to buddies on ASC, is more important to learn the basics with enjoyable lightweight camping than it is to stock up on supplies and equipment for the day SHTF and learn very little during the process.

One litre aluminium kettle with tea infuser for £3.50 and some sporks for £1 each all from Tesco.
The kettle is great as it is mm perfect for fitting in my Trangia 25, adds next to nothing on the weight, will give me faster water boil times with less meths and cost a fraction of the original Trangia version.

The material on this kettle is very thin. It does state on it that the kettle is suitable for electric, gas and open flame but I would be a little cautious of just how hot I let it get. But at £3.50 I can afford a little trial and error on this one, if I do end up buckling the thing then I can pop down the road and get another or three!
I recieved one of these kettles as a product sample earlier this year. I too am a bit concerned about how well it will hold up to strong heat. I tested mine over open fire, it held up long enought to boil water in it- but the plastic on the handle and the plastic knob on the lid did not react well to the massive heat and occasional flame.
I ended up giving mine away to two hikers I met at an open campsite. They had forgotten to bring fuel for their Trangia - and did not wish to use their Trangia pots over open fire.

I've used mine on huge fires, 4800w gas stoves, and on top of my twig burner. It's done very well. the handle has reached tempratures so high I need welding gauntlets to pick it up, but it has never shown any signs of melting. Maybe I was just lucky to get a good one, maybe you (Jakob) were unlucky and got a faulty one, who knows. But Like Jus says, it cheap enough to buy another if you need to. :)
I guess it is very much possible that there are versions with heat resistant plastic on the handle - and some without. I remember the price of mine being extremly low, but I can't remember how low exactly. I may have gotten a cheap copy of an already low priced product. I am sometimes amazed when I recieve e-mails at work from agents and manufactures in the Far East; no matter how cheap a product is, you can always find a cheaper version/copy.
I remember we got a sample of some folding cooking utensils once, sent from China i think (we get a lot of samples like that, without asking for them) - I took a set home for testing. If you left them in the pot, they melted and mixed with the food :p

LOL, essence of spork haha. When I bought my kettle they were £7, rather than the £3.50 they are now, so maybe the extra price included better plastics? Even if mine ever did melt, it's not impossible to replace it with a wooden piece.

You're not wrong there bud, I'm a gas engineer by trade and used it today to get the pilot light going on an old back boiler that had a knackered ignition. Usually you either need a very long bendy taper and a whole lot of luck to get em going or take the gas fire off the front then light it. I used the fire steel and the shower of sparks it gave off bounced around lovely underneath, 2 strikes and it was going. Saved me half an hour that did :-)

Gotta agree with you on this one, Jakob. For the last 5 years or so I've had two 13L drybags (unlucky?) and one compression drybag for my sleeping bag. Now I've just acquired a 20L clear drybag in anticipation of a short kayak trip this weekend, and I'm loving the options I have for packing now. I don't like tossing everything in one big bag, so having a couple of smaller bags paired with the slightly larger clear one is going to make my packing more versatile.
I've used them on vacation for dealing with wet beach clothing, for keeping my camera dry on dayhikes, ah I could go on for a while. Either way, I side with the Dane on this one.
Cheers!

To be honest, I got it as it was £1, my expectations are pretty low.
I am in Essex, nice sunny day today so got back, filled it up and left it in the sun for 3hrs (as per instructions), water was warmish, you could easily put up with the temp whilst having a shower, the water comes out of a tiny shower head at an ok rate.
If you needed to have a quick wash and fancied some slightly warmer water then the surrounding streams/rivers etc then it would be ok as it is not a heavy item when empty, but apart from those particular circumstances not sure how much use I will get out of it.

Lowe Alpine Vector Salient 70+20 w. side pockets - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkT2Rfggq5k
The vintage Haglöfs didn't work out (couldn't get the tobacco smell out of it - and I nearly well destroyed all of the DWR coating inside the pack, trying to get rid of the smell, aside from that; the carrying system was slightly too narrow).
I had my eye on a Karrimor Sabre 75 w. side pockets, but decided against it for two reasons: 1. I have a fairly long back, mostly too long for non-adjustable packs. Not being able to try the pack before ordering, I was quite reluctant. 2. The lack of a bottom compartment. This feature is, for me at least, very important for the way I pack and organise my backpack.
I sold a lot of Lowe Salient's at my old job; compared to any Deuter, Vango, Nordpol, Cerro Torre or Haglöfs pack I have ever tried, the Lowe Salient have always had the best carrying system for me. The only reason for me not to get one before now, is the fact that I really do not like hauling around a large tactical/military style backpack (I almost went to prison because I objected to serving in the military, but got off with nine months of community service), olive green is nice, but I could really do without the molle straps etc. But, aesthetics/pride aside; comfort and functionality is king. So, I decided to finally get one.
Lowe Alpine Bitz Bag - I have had one of these brilliant hardwearing little organisers in my daily pack for many years. Knowing that these are getting harder and harder to come by, I decided to order a spare.
Trekmates Backpack Raincover Large (65-85 L) - the Lowe Salient does not come with a built-in cover

Never seen one of those before. When I started on air rifles, I picked up a BSA supersport carbine, added a BSA moderator, BSA deer hunter scope, custom bipod, camo super sling, and a gas ram conversion. The rifle itself was only £130 new, but the other bits came to around £250 including labour charges. A great rifle as standard, despite being a breaker, rather than an underlever, it was surprisingly accurate. Still have a load of logon penetrator hunting pellets if you want them.

I saw a product a while ago, which was a net made of steel cable/wire rope, that had a steel drawcord with loops. You simple stick your pack into it, pull up the cord and attach a padlock. A little on the heavy side for air travel I would think though. About a kilo per net I believe.

Superglue...! - O.K. maybe not be very sexy or expensive but I bought a card of 12 small "single use" capsules of superglue which are ideal for keeping one or two in your kit bag for first aid or kit repairs. Each capsule is sealed and has a cap and is contained in it's own blister pack compartment on the card so double sealed against any leakage - these were a bargain at £1 for 12 from Poundland UK.
Capsules weight nothing, just a few grams each and can be resealed if contents not all used by melting tip with a match/lighter flame.

Superglue was actually invented during the Vietnam War for field based medical applications (why do you think its so good at sticking skin together) and is still used in hospitals today although it is slightly different to household superglue.

Apply around the edges of the wound and hold together until secure. Then apply a little over the closed wound to seal completely.

Isn't there a danger of sealing in sources of infection? The correct thing seems to be to wash out wound very thoroughly indeed before bandaging or sealing. If too deep for this procedure then the standard advice of applying pressure and getting medical help pronto must apply.

Indead standard protocol of cleaning the wound still applies. The glue is very useful for situations where you find that plasters or steristrips are not holding very well. The glue is a fast seal option that can get you easily sorted until your travels enable you to seek professional help. Products are available that can 'unstick' the sticky stuff so that the wound can be treated and stitched by medical staff.
As an alternative this product is also available http://www.elastoplast.co.uk/products/First-Aid/spray-plaster/71444.html and can be used with steri strips to help close a wound.

Spray plaster should only be used in an absolute emergency. I found out the hard way. I split my lip open, the "friendly" staff decided it was a good idea to spray that stuff on, got to hospital for stitches, they had to use a scrubbing brush to get all the spray stuff out of the wound before they could stitch it up.
Also when it comes to washing wounds. Use alcohol, not water, if you can. If the wound is a clean cut, don't wash it at all. Washing wounds with water has a negative effect on the healing process. At least with alcohol it all evaporates off of the wound.
Hope that is of some use to you.

Actually Adam current thinking (JRCALC and Wilderness medicine) leans towards cleaning the wound with 0.9% Saline solution as opposed to any other agent. Even things like Iodine actually interfere with healing

The tesco one is the same as the one in the picture, but olive green, so more bushcrafty lol.
I was a little disappointed with the collins gem version of food for free, hasn't got quite as much detail as I had hoped. Still, good little pocket book to carry around with you.

Mountain Warehouse completely out of stock. I will have to try another store. Don't you go blowing yourself up with that latest haul!

LOL, they do use it as rocket propellant after all. It's pretty safe stuff if you mix it with the right substances, and keep the temperatures in the green.

It's readily available on the internet, you just have to sign a declaration (no idea what it said, didn't read it) which probably mentions illegal uses etc... Pyrotechnics use the stuff all the time.

Err most definately neither. Just good local knowledge and I run the gauntlet of the 17 gatsos on a regular basis.
Incidentally I used to work for Go when it was CCC. I worked for Mountain Warehouse too - glad i decided to make the career change.
