I am not disparaging your purchase but why so low a poundage for the bow?

JEEP
22-08-2011, 03:29 PM
I can easily draw a 60lb bow, but not hold it still long enough to aim with it.

I have arthritis in my left shoulder; drawing a bow heavier than 35lb and attempting to take aim with it, will cause my shoulder to start shaking and hurt like a b***h.

JEEP

I have nothing particular against tactical gear actually - as long as the quality is good. The thing is just; most gear I have seen advertised as "tactical" is anything but good quality.

It seems that "tactical", these days, is a term used to add percieved value to othervice worthless pieces of gear.

Adam Savage
23-08-2011, 04:39 PM
I know what you're saying there Jakob. It is the word they use to get wannabe soldiers and people that have seen too many films, to buy practically worthless products. Well nine times out of ten anyway. Things like serrated blades, knuckle guards, glass breaking pommels, etc. All of those things stop a knife being a usable tool, and turn it into more of a weapon or display piece. I'd rather have a piece of equipment that does what it was designed for. not saying your purchase falls into this category, but many of them do unfortunately.

JEEP
23-08-2011, 05:32 PM
Serrated! That was my reason; I have never actually owned a serrated blade. I ordered this knife to get some hands-on experience with a serrated blade.

Ah, I see now. You'll have to let us know how well you get on with it. I really don't find them at all usable, but that is my opinion. Everyone finds these things different.

Decided to use the tarp for Dartmoor rather than the banshee to save some weight so bought some walking poles to use with the new DD 3x3 tarp. Also bought water purification tablets, 2x Opinel No 7's for the kids, burns kit, small 'biners and a tick remover.
Then whilst on a visit to Mr Budds yesterday I had an urge to visit Go Outdoors, stupid thing to do really and I new I shouldn't do it but the force was too strong! So ended up coming away with Frontier Pro water filter, Blaze Titanium stove, Folding ally windshield and a couple of 100g gas cartridges :ashamed:

Oh and whilst at the Gathering I bought various bits of clothing, utility bags, books and untold bits for the kids and this http://www.tauntonleisure.com/tentipi-muurikka-48-cooking-skillett-bag-available-separately/p5953
Supposed to be used for cooking with but as all items should have more than one use I decided that it would make a very good fire bowl to use under the tripod as the damp conditions and wet wood were proving troublesome. Worked a treat in helping to maintain the heat in the fire and drying wood around the edges and will definately use at family base camps in the future.

Westlers/Wayferers food packs apparently have a similar system where a small amount of hot water is added to the pack to start the reaction and then left to heat. Have not seen the packs on the shelves yet but read a leaflet about it today in my local camp store. They also make reference to it on the Westlers web site but don't have much info on it.

jus_young
31-08-2011, 10:27 PM
Should do some research first before posting on here really. Found an article from 2003 about these packs but they seemed to disappear, maybe didn't catch on. The leaflet I read was a new one so maybe they are looking at chucking them out again?

Some other self heating food ideas here...

http://www.hotpackmeals.co.uk/hotpacks/starter-pack-6-action-pack-meals.html

Link to a self heating (flameless) ration heater pack that is water activated & can be used with various 'wet' sealed meal pouches and is actually a good price at £1.19 (or it would be if it wasn't out of stock with this retailer) but shows that stand-alone flameless food heaters are out there ...

I have a Vango Banshee 200 for my own outings and an Icarus 500 for the family woodland trips and don't have any issue with leaks from either. I think you have had a bit of bad luck there! The only problem I have just found with the Banshee is, due to limited space, I can quite easily push the inner against the outer during the night which then draws the moisture through. This has only happened once though and that was on Exmoor when the rain was a little excessive.

hi martin
heres a direct link http://www.springfields.co.uk/camping/cooking-and-eating/brunton/?id=5379 its on sale at the mo and it cost £7.50 plus £3.99 p&p they normally retail for double this so even taking the postage into consideration its still a good buy. there are similar items on ebay but this brunton one stands head and shoulders above them it is very well made and comes with an aluminium wraparound heatshield.

I came home withe the following:
Vango Nitestar 450; http://www.vango.co.uk/adventure/nitestar-450-l.html A big and heavy sleeping bag, but I needed a new bag for winter camping - and the price was very good
Vango Storm Shelter 200; http://www.vango.co.uk/tents/storm-shelter-200.html Got this one for free, I will probably never need it, but it is nice to have
Vango Camp Rope; http://www.vango.co.uk/accessories/rope.html Another freebie - will come in handy for putting up my tarp
Vango Cargo 65 (black); http://www.vango.co.uk/rucsacs/cargo-65.html The rep's own bag for product samples, like new, given to me as a personal gift

Brilliant bag , plenty of room , plenty of pockets , takes summer weight overnight gear easily and you can hide all the crafty tools and bits in the huge admin front compartment , all safely secured in their own pockets ... No more searching in the bottom of your ruck for bits , you just have to remember which pocket you stowed it in !!! Ha ha ha !!!
The sandstone is a perfect match for Maxpedition khaki so i can use the extra pockets from my sabercat waist pack system on it too ! Even more pockets hey !!!
But the best thing for me , is that as it is a Quasi Military Style pack , it rides quite high on the back and allows me to use my Canon waist pack camera bag too ...

I am quiet fond of orange. It goes well with my red beard :P

I have made a habit of always carrying at least one orange piece of clothing when out and about. It is good for making yourself visuable, if you suddenly find yourself in the middle of a hunt, where the hunters have forgotten to put up signs at the entrence to the forest - I have tried that a few times, once while being responsible for 15 scouts, aged 10-12.
And, if an accident should happen, it is always nice to be visible from a distance.

Nice one Jeep , never been caught up in a hunting area myself , but sometimes , if I'm going up in the hills I carry a four by one metre panel of really high viz magenta neon pink spinaker cloth , like front line troops used to mark friendlys for air strikes , reckon if i get in trouble or come accross others who need help , the rescue teams should be able to see that clear enough by day light and at night a stove burning will act as a heat beacon for the I.R.camera... it doubles as a low windbreak and groundsheet too ... so long as your not trying to be stealthy !

I would say O-1 is gunna be way too heavy, and not particularly rust resistant, for stove material. You would be much better off with some thin stainless. This piece was £16.79 inc delivery, from Cromwell Industrial Tools (http://www.cromwell.co.uk/category_page/160202).

here it is assembled adam, if you've not seen one before i suppose the pic of it as it was packed in the box can make one wonder a little. i think its a great idea, as its so compact when packed yet so sturdy once assembled, and you have the option of either meths or gas. next time i'm out maybe i'll try and do a review of it, ie, boil times with a kettle and a pot.

Just been reading about seasoning, and looks like the easiest way (if you can remove the handle, if it's wooden or plastic) is to pour polyunsaturated cooking oil into it, pop it in the oven at 150 degrees C for four hours, with taking out every hour, to brush the oil up and around the sides.

Think I'll give that a go before my next meet :)

an idea for winter anyways, il report on how it pans out.

Layering doesn't work underneath you in a hammock. The reason layering works normally is because it traps layers of air that warm up which then keep you warm. Underneath you, in a hammock, everything is compressed thus eliminating the layers of trapped air and you get cold through the conduction of heat from your warm body to the cold air around you (it's simple physics).

Now, the foil blanket will reflect some of heat back to your body and, to a far lesser degree, will reflect some of the heat that passes through your 'ground mat' back to the 'ground mat' but it won't get through that and back to your body. I would go so far as to say that you won't get any benefit whatsoever from the foil blanket in the configuration you have mentioned.

Anyway, let us know how you get on.

I agree with Martin on this one. Plus (like you point out) it's not breathable, so you would more than likely end up with a damp back. As we all know, you loose body heat 25 times faster, when wet. Nice thought though. If you could find a thermally reflective, breathable membrane, that would be ideal. Maybe there is such a product on the market?

I thought that tea infusers generally had larger holes because tea-leaves are bigger than coffee grounds. Don't the grounds escape through tea-leaf sized holes?

Whats your thoughts on this one? They say it is 'water resistant' but just wondering if from looking at it how resistant it is (I know its just a guess as its hard to say without trying). I am after something that is easier to use in the banshee as the one I have at the moment is only accessable from the top end so makes it very awkward to get in. Could also use as quick cover if the need arises depending on how good it is.

Heard back from Paul about the Czech bedrolls, he says the outer was 100% waterproof on our trip. He used a Snugpak Softie, instead of the blanket, but I'm guessing the blanket would be plenty warm enough.

Did you use that on Exmoor? Didn't see that one. Going to use a sleeping bag rather than the blanket but hopefully shouldn't have a problem with overheating as I can open this bivvy up. The Milcom one I have at the moment is a pain in the rear as you climb in and out of the top so overheat during the night as you can't regulate the temperature properly

Being a break barrel, and having the bipod, it never really suited a wrap. Tried it, but it kept either falling off, or tangling in things haha.

Just ordered 3 mora 511 from Axminster tools. Very cheap £4.66 each, already had one I am re-handling. And they have taken them off the shelves so got in quick.
They are not the best mora knives, but for that money if I mess up I won't be to upset.
Really more of a child's knife but as with mora they are still sharp out of the box as they say ;)
So first one should be posted within the week as nearly finished.
