because of going for a Norway winter experience later this year or beginning of next, I have purchased myself some:
Mukluks (British army issue)
Mukluk felt liners
wristlets
Facemask
Snow shoes (British army bats (made in Sweden or Norway)
Most of the other warm clothing needed I already have.
I had no idea these existed before your post and little clue what they were after it.
So, I've put my google shoes on and did a bit of research, they look pretty cool :D
4942
Made from soft flexible fabricLaces to secure boot to foot
Leather re enforced band around sole area
Tough under-boot rubber sole
Worn as an over boot for warmth & comfort in the snow
It is the wrong time of year for snow here in Cornwall (monsoon like rain and near hurricane strength winds certainly, but snow no) and even when it is the right time of year, we don't get much that snow and rarely 'proper' snow. So as a trip to proper snow territory is not currently on the horizon, I could not justify buying a pair for use as intended.
But (oh there is always a but isn't there) these mukluks struck me as being rather similar in appearance as to (and don't laugh) camping slippers, like the snugpak softie tent boots for example, which I have been pondering buying for some time.
4943
Now before you all start accusing me of pulling a Casey and shout 'Show us yer Tartan' the main reason I am considering such a purchase, is after a long day walking, it is good to get your boots off, stretch your feet and give them a bit of air. While I was happy to pad around bare foot on the grass at various campsites last year, it wasn't always practical to do so. So in the absence of any alternative footwear, it was a case of putting the boots back on and denying my feet a bit of a breather. Camping slippers might have been a solution on such occasions.
However, when I actually manage to get out for an adventure (hopefully from the end of this month onwards) I intend to go wild and I am wondering if a slipper like the snugpak tent boot or the northface mule, would be as much use on moorland or in the woods as a chocolate teapot in a sauna?
And these camping slippers are rather expensive, so the cost plus whether they would be fit for purpose, has meant my debit card has slept snugly in my wallet, blissfully unaware that I have be contemplating abusing it once again.
But that sleep may now be disturbed as these Mukluks seem to be of a similar design, are also made from soft flexible fabric, but and this may well be the clincher, have a tough rubber sole.
So after rambling around the point, I wonder if you (or anyone else who is familiar with Mukluks) could satisfy my curiosity and let me know if these Mukluks, used in conjunction with suitable sock, would be of any use as wild camping slippers?
Many thanks,
Colin

That is probly the best piece of kit you could have bought for a winter Norway trip. I use the Norwegian army ones . Those are ruberized to about half way up to the knee. So that you can keep your feet dry in wet snow also. If you start to feel cold on your feet, just pull them on over your boots (clean off the snow on your boots first). And then walk around a little, and your feet will be toast in no time. norwegian soldiers use them mostly on guard duty in the field in winter Sort of gets cold to guard a .50 cal when its -25 C. The UK amred forces train in Norway, so I guess they have picked up a lot of our arctic gear....and sometimes improved on it.
I use mine when I go shore fishing in the winter. Never had as much a s a pinky toe complain about the cold.
Very tidy SAK there jakob Have not seen one like that before.

4 years after my national service year I was in for a retraining excercise in March. It was -20 in the mountains, and we were in tents. The problem was not that really. I was the squad corporal...the problem was that my "squad" consisted of yours truely and a 40 year old taxi driver from Trondheim, who showed up with 10 litres of moonshine, and announced that he was on a holliday from his wife and kids..and proceeded to make sure he did not have to bring any of that home...well, I had to check that the quality was up to standards and helped him get rid of it...*cough*
Anyway to make a long story short....I ended up with an inflamation in the achilles tendon in both feet. Thank you army for issuing brand new boots and not give me a chance to walk them in befoire sending me into the hills. I was sent to a field hospital, whereopn I got some pills, was told by the doc to not wear boots, and sent back into the hills again. I went trough the rest of the excercise wearing mukluks, over two pairs of wool socks for 2 weeks, including the final party before signing off and going home...so yes, you can use them as wild camping slippers...

For camping slippers like you described, have you considered Crocs? They do a version which has a fleece liner, and will weigh next to nothing in your pack.

You were right first time, its activated carbon. Not sure if it will work though as I believe the water permeates from all round the bag rather than just the bottom so very little of the water flow would go through the carbon.

a couple of packet of glow sticks (which last for days)

Molle shoulder bag from that auction website. Only forgot to check where the item was....turned out to be Hong Kong so it will be a month. Does not concern me that it is made in China.
Name a product that is NOT made ion China these days...

Long leg gaiters - as my ankle gaiters just aren't long enough to cope with the mud resulting from all this rain.
Camp slippers - Mukluks - erm I just fancied the look of them.
Pattern 58 poncho - I usually take a lightweight poncho out with me on my wanderings and it is good in the rain, but pap in the wind. A mate suggested I have a look at the P58 as its weight gives it greater wind repellency and it can also be used a a shelter, so I when I saw one in good nick going cheap, I had a punt.
Pattern 58 poncho roll - something to put the poncho in, I may be able to incorporate it into the KS carry system project and it only cost a pound.
Ponchoi Liner - I have heard nothing but good things about this versatile bit of kit, It can be used as a warm weather sleeping bag, a cold weather sleeping bag liner, a hammock under quilt and ... a poncho liner :)

Is it the blue one, with the light blue edging? If it is, they were selling them off at the end of last season too. They dropped them to £1.25 by the time I got there :D
Unfortunately it was a less tasteful bright orange edging and dark grey seat, I was just blown away that I found something in any shop cheaper than Clas Ohlson, although my local Clas seems to have stopped selling Mora knives :(

tesco is a great place for end of season bargains. Kettles for £2.50, cheap seat, sleeping bags down to half price, etc
I notice a lot of shops are selling the Hultafors knives now. The craftsmen is a good little knife, well worth the same price as a Mora.

Nice, will bear that in mind if my Mora 911 has a catastrophic failure. There's a massive Tesco store near me so will keep an eye out, although camping stuff usually goes up in August near me due to Reading festival, then dirt cheap in September.

Not so bushcrafty, but a 12V Multi power station, with starter battery and clamps for the car, when my battery goes flat (it has happened when using our 12V cooler box, heated seats, air con heater, DVD player for the backseat for the kids all at the same time, that next morning....no fun.
Besides the car batery needs replacing too...
Anyway there is also a 220V outlet on it, 12 V cigarette plug x 2 outlets, and air compressor to inflate tires, bicycle tires, inflatable toys, air matresses, and my SIB boat. And it has a light. Quite veratile pice of kit. So it will be good to have when doing some poshcrafting, or just for light when shore fishing :-)
And whose idea was it to buy it and forked out for it?
None other than my lovely wife!

I've gotten a few things over the last couple of months and thought I'd share them now:
Just received two hats from Duluth Trading Company; the Military Patrol Cap (http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/mens/mens-accessories/hats-and-caps-for-men/90033.aspx) which I've been wearing to work every day now, and the "Solarweave" Outback Hat. (http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/mens/mens-accessories/hats-and-caps-for-men/64108.aspx) I'd been looking for a wide-brimmed cotton hat for a while, but nothing I've tried, even the hats that cost 4 times more than this one, fit my head well. My wife is getting sick of my wearing it around the house. I love it.
I also bought a Buck 501 Squire (http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1008&bih=437&tbm=isch&tbnid=ApaLfIoUTrRMSM:&imgrefurl=http://www.amazon.com/Buck-501-Squire-Lockback-Folding/dp/B000EHYZQ4&docid=SJtq_rg_ywBQWM&imgurl=http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31MXKS13FNL._SL500_SS500_.jpg&w=500&h=500&ei=7dgOUM7cH6Lh0QHgv4D4Dw&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=375&sig=117610057878393371632&page=1&tbnh=128&tbnw=128&start=0&ndsp=5&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0,i:85&tx=59&ty=50) lockback folding knife from a small consignment store somewhere in West Virginia. I don't know how old it is, but the blade edge is worn away from being sharpened, but otherwise it's in great shape. I only paid $20 for it too.
I also picked up a new hammock from Walmart (for those of you in the UK, it's a glorified Poundland. :D ) For only $25 it's surprisingly roomy and comfortable. I only bought it because I was driving from a job in West Virginia to meet my family who was vacationing on the coast in Delaware and hadn't had time to pack my hammock to bring with me. It's the "Equip Travel Hammock (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Equip-Travel-Hammock/20434439)."

Same here. Two arrived this morning and I am mighty impressed. I'm 6 foot tall and have quite a few pounds around the belly but they have plenty of room inside. One of them did arrive with a few buttons missing but after a quick mail to Michelle at Military Mart spares are on their way.
Great service and very, very good value.
I think my next buy is going to be a Polish roll mat. They are quoted as saying that they are very, very comfortable and like sleeping on a mattress. They fit inside the Czech bag perfectly or you can buy both together for twenty five quid.

Got a French ressy bag, which is a bit like the British ressy bag posted a couple of pages back, but with continental sophistication (and velcro fastenings), might be handy as a day pouch.
For reasons I will not bore you with, I can not do overnighters at the moment, but I have been out walking, a lot, over the last couple of weeks (doing between five to ten miles every day and fifteen to twenty five milers on my days off) and for anyone who is a walker, if you have not done so already, get yourself down to Bushcraftland as they are selling useful, brand name, foot care product, the kind you struggle to get change back from a fiver if bought at a chemist; for one British pound. Blister sticks, cream and plasters, cracked skin / heel cream and even anti chaffing cream. Got myself a shed load (literally) of all of them :D
I also picked up another of their waterproof MP3 pouches, which if you get rid of the connector wire, are grand for putting a phone in, or your fags (or a camera, if I ever remember to take it out with me).

Due to a postal system worse than our own, the Czech maid MM arranged as a thank you for me did not receive her cancellation letter, arrived last week in Ormskirk and has been kicking her heels around the (now spotless) warehouse, as she had no further destination to be sent on to.
I read your post, gave MM a call and they are happy to send her on to you with thanks (apparently the level of cleanliness is starting to freak them out).
She should be with you in two to three working days.

Just about anything I buy gets the famous,(or should that be INfamous?) "What have you bought now?" question.. closely followed by " Why do you need that?".
Got rid of all my hiking gear 10 years ago , and since took it back up, so had to replace everything... And add a bit more..
Bought an un-issued army bivvi bag from the internet for £17.. Smashing bit of kit... Then a 1 man tent for the same price, again from the internet.
Next purchase was a silva military compass for £4, Which I duly dropped and bubble on first outing.. tried to steam it and ended up ruining it completely... So got another one. A Pair of Merrel boots was next at £23,goretex lined as bonus !!.
I bought a duel fuel stove after the missus 3/4 filled the motor with un-leaded when it's a diesel car....... Sadly it didn't take kindly to a diesel/un-leaded mixture, but at £25 was a bargain. A copy of the 1986 bible for the outdoorsman, AKA S.A.S survival handbook for 99p,as I had let my skills wain and needed to brush up.
Other things I have begged and traded, like a 65 ltr pack and sleeping bag,so now I am back up and running, ready for the days out on the hills, as well as the woods....

Just bought the Bahco Laplander foldable saw.
It seemed a very popular saw with good reviews.
Have to say I am very pleased with it.
Lightweight, cuts really well, inexpensive, like the green handle with rubberised grip and lanyard. The blade locks in both the open and closed position and the saw has a comfortable cutting angle and does not wobble.
You can get replaceable blades, although I think they will last a long time for occasional use.
I think this tool will be on all my woodland camping trips, its just too useful and light not to take with you.

Seemed to give me a good feel when I was pulling in the 9 inch perch the other night. I could feel the fish tearing apart my worm on the hook, but nothing was taking the hook in. Really annoying, but still fun being out on the water.

Just got myself a Gelert Solo tent for my solo/lite kit as it had some good reviews and great price. Ideally though I think I would like a Vango Banshee 200 or even more ideally a Terra Nova Laser (when I have more funds). I was tempted with the lichfield treklite 200 (Cheaper Vango Banshe clone) but the color just put me off. The gelert solo should do me fine for now though :)

Took a trip to Go-outdoors today. Picked up a North Ridge Torre XL for £74.99 (RRP £180, normal selling price at GO, £139).
Not too often I use a tent, but this will be fantastic for when I do. Over 4m long overall (2m "living space" + 2.35m "sleeping space"), 1.2m high, 1.4m wide, two doors, side door has full cover fly screen + solid door, 5000mm HH ripstop fly, and packed weight with all poles and pegs is only 4.4kg. Will have to write a review when I use it.

Usually the one in Penzance, but I'll be in your neck of the woods later today (picking up another basha from Camborne Army surplus, I already have a used one which I got for a fiver which was a bargain, but matey bob has a new one still in the packaging and he is letting me have it for a tenner, which is a bargain too :D) before heading up, over and beyond Carn Brea on today's adventure; so I may pop in your one and see if there is anything in there I didn't spot in Penzance.

I went into town today and while there I decided to check out a few charity shops for wool blankets. I am going to add them to my Czech bedrolls for winter use by using the original one as a template and cutting the new ones into the same shape, cut out some button holes and do a bit of hand sewing to make them stronger.
The first shop I walked into had a load of them, all pure heavyweight wool which were donated only this morning. I picked up three at £3.00 each.

Cheers Neil Cracking idea fella, definitely a bargain. It is good to see another budget bushcrafter in the making T^
I've 'pimped' my bed roll twice since I got it. First with a rectangular lightweight 'jungle' bag for warmer weather ground dwelling and more recently with a US poncho liner, which can also be used in warmer weather ground dwelling, but can also be used as an under quilt (a waterproof one, if used in conjunction with the outer shell) when swinging. My pimping efforts cost a bit more the £9 steal you made today (indeed both my efforts cost more that the bed roll itself) but as both can be used independently of the bed roll as well as with it, I don't feel to bad about it. Besides, if I hadn't spent the money on myself, my occasional lady friend would have requisitioned the money for the funding of her social life, so money well spent :D
I popped into your local Jim's on my travels, they have the whistle and the cheaper version of the tripod torch, but could not see any of the collapsible water carriers or didy microfiber towels.
I also popped into Camborne Army Surplus and picked up a new Desert Basha (still in its plastic packaging) for ten British pounds and I spotted one of these
521252135214
on his pound rail and as it fit, thought it would be rude to leave it hanging there.
And, they both actually got used about an hour later when I was up on Carn Brea and the storm hit. Set up my new basha to make a cosy cubby hole in the little garden below the castle, made a brew and slipped the thermal gilet under my shirt to keep me toasty, while the sudden hurricane ran its course (it was so bad, the little man inside the castle who was pointing, waving and shouting something other than 'Did that only cost a tenner?' at me, didn't pop his head out until the sun was out again and I had packed the basha away (TOP TIP: always carry a dry bag) climbing back up to the castle proper. All kinds of hilarity then ensued, but that would take this post even more off topic, so I'll will post the details about the rest of my adventure elsewhere, if I don't fall asleep first.
But while I am here... @ FishyFolk, that is a handy little cook set you have got yourself there. I got the Mountain Warehouse one (and me being me, it was discounted something silly) I have used it several times on day hikes. It is ace.
Useful purchases T^

Yes but only for Norwegian online shops. They come in 3 sizes. 0,7L, 1,5L and 4 litres...the small one is 199NOK (around 20£) while the 1,5litre model is 250NOK (25£)
But I do not think Eagle products make them, they only slap their logo on it and market it, as I have seen a lot of "their" stuff on Ebay under other brand names.
The 0,7 L is DKr 199, here in Denmark (approx £31,50)

Okay, then you save nothing by buying it from here...it excactly the same price as NOK and DKR have the same value...(but I think you have the wrong exchange rate there, Jakob)
That's because I wrote DKr 199 instead of DKr. 299, which is the actual price :p

Its not sad mate !!. I was in there yesterday and the shelf was loaded up with them. I resisted buying any because the lids wouldn't come off.
Today in Aldi I bought a Hexi type burner, reduced in price to £1.99 along with a couple of boxes of fuel tablets also reduced down to 99p.

its a lovely action, I fired through 8 to empty the mag (2" group at 30yards, so poor but I was rattling them through) before my mate got the pellet in for his second shot in the springer.
what about bsa super ten? shoots just as well as mine, I guy I met at 'camp dave' had one and we got bored shooting the bulls eyes on paper targets so opted to shoot the 4 map pins that held the A4 to the tree at 35yards. we could do this in 30seconds often without reloading

Also bought a piece of deer antler to mod my Light My Fire Firesteel. Again from the carboot and also two quid.

Which combat is it? I have a Combat 5, that I've had for 15 years, which is still usable. I also saw a combat 1 at my local recycling centre, which looked in ok condition.

Hi there Crazysaint.
The tent is a Combat 1, which looking at the original instructions was made in 1985. I remember around the same time having the exact same tent. I was fourteen at the time and these tents were all the rage 'up north', because they were affordable and very easy to put up. When I decided to open it up, it brought back all those great memories of camping when I was a kid. I did wonder if the original spacers for between the main tent and the flysheet were with it because they were very easily lost. They were both there but one of the discs that support the upright poles is missing. It has the original mud marks from back garden camping on the sewn in groundsheet but there is not a spot of mould in sight. I can't wait to use it, and if I am camping by myself I might give the flysheet a go as a basha/tarp.
As promised I said that I was going to mod my Light My Fire Army Fire Steel by attatching it to some antler I bought for a couple of quid. Its my first attempt so please be gentle.

I used a Dremmel type tool to cut the antler to size. I have never in my life smelt anything as bad as the smoke that was coming from it when I was cutting. The back door was open, the extractor was on, and my six year old daughter had her PJ's over her nose moaning for dear life !!. I ended up popping around to a neighbour who has the best superglue and activator spray which I used to stick the firesteel in. I will be changing the striker and lanyard soon because its not long enough and its an excuse to try out cordage for the first time.
Cheers Neil

The firesteel looks great Neil. Still haven't got round to making an antler one myself. The smell it gives off, is the same as with horns. They're made of keratin, which is the same thing your hair and finger nails are made of, which is why they smell so bad when they get hot.
With the tent, it's great when those memories come back. Might dust off my combat 5 and give it a go :). Also, might pop to the local recycle centre and grab the 1 they had there (if it's still there). Any parts that are missing can be made up easy enough in the workshop, as long as there's no big tears or mildew anywhere.
