It was quite large about the size of your fist and only one of them !!

It's one of three things.
1) Builders foam
2) A bald platypus
3) Some kind of fungi

Honestly though, I wouldn't have a clue. It looks pretty misshapen/deformed, probably through damage during it's growth or environmental (soil, atmosphere) changes.

It's possibly one of the Boletus, although I am happy to be proved wrong :rolleyes:

Certainly a bolete (not neccesarily a member of the genus boletus - in fact probably not, looks more like a Xerocomus). No hope of an ID without a shot of the mushroom sliced in half. You did the right thing to leave it there, given that there was only one of them and it looks past its best for eating anyway.
