Morning all

thought i would share my experience from yesterday with you all.

I contacted a member of the forum to see if they were still around the location listed on there profile (i wont name them), after a few PM's it got to the point of meeting this member, so we came to agree on a time and location and met up at said time and place.

went for a mellow walk down to a wood from a near by car park, generally chatting along the way, upon reaching the wood, i was asked what my skill level was like and knowledge, i still very much consider my self as a beginner to be fair, we found a spot and sat for a cuppa, just generally speaking about bush craft and they way we do things, it turned out to be a very nice meeting

the time taking by the forum member to explain things to me about plants and some fungi etc was great and very much appreciated, i feel the whole event for me was a very informational rich experience, discovered we had a few more things in common other than just bushcraft interests.

hopefully they will be up for meeting again, maybe i can bring some knowledge to the table that would be of interest to them, it was rather inspirational to me, and its made me want to learn alot more before we meet again.

I was rather nervous of meeting a complete stranger to be fair, but knowing we had common ground (bush craft interests) to talk about was a huge ice breaker from the get go.

this forum member is a real nice guy a pleasure to meet and talk with.

i would like to say a huge thanks for meeting me, sharing your knowledge and for the ride back to mine.

you sir are a gentleman

hope to see you again in the near future

again thank you very much for a great evening out

Madz

What can I say after praise like that....?

It was a pleasure for me too and a second date at least is on the cards :jumping-joy:

Thanks very much for your kind words Madz, I also learnt a few things as we always do meeting new people with different experiences. You should give yourself more credit, you concider yourself a beginner but I would say you have done really well to know as much as you do. In my experience there is no such thing as a beginner, we are all learning and if someone says they are an expert they can sometimes close the door to learning more. These things come with experience and the more you do the more experienced you will be.

We looked at animal tracks and signs, some activity had us baffaled with scrapping in the grass and more than one type of dropping. A time when I needed my tracking book with me. Tree ID came up too and some plant ID in the dark, always a challege!

Let me finish by saying it was an enjoyable evening and you too are a gentleman, we will have to get out again in the near future.

So plans have been made for a second date, a camp out this time, and strictly no spooning! My mate who helps out with natures craft is coming and a guy from work. It will be his first experience of bushcraft which will be interesting, if he gets too annoying we can tie him to a tree and gag him! He's a bit of a clown at work so hes been warned about his behaviour. We will do a full report next month

yeah np Stamp, any chance you could help me out with some thing i have been thinking about doing on my travels.

basically where i get about a bit i was thinking of planting seeds, but not to sure when beech nuts are germinated/pollinated, was going to grab a handful and plant some in the forests and along some tracks, we have some mighty beech here and to keep them tree's going thought it might be a good idea, same with the oaks and yew and few other of my favorite tree's

what do you think good idea or not? i dont really know enough about these tree's in that way.

Try planting some apple/plum/cherry seeds, in a real out the way place and in years to come you might just have a nice little "orchard", just a thought....

MadZ

plum is one of the tree's that i have not found many of this year the ones i knew of have been cut up, the others are over hanging from peoples gardens, i try not to touch these as had a few issues in the past, great idea though, ill have to make another pouch and get a tin to keep some seeds in. gorilla gardening could be an interesting addition to bushcraft

Sounds good mate, any tree that produces a nut will need to be planted straight away as the energy stored in the nut will start to break down and lose energy required for germination, so you can get started on Beech and Oak now.

If you want grow Yew its a little more difficult, seeds off the tree are in a state of dormancy, they need scarification and stratification before they will germinate. This happens naturally (2-3 years on the forest floor) or you can do it yourself:

Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours
Stratification: Warm stratify for 90 days+, cold stratify for 60 days+
Germination: Sow seed 3/8 inch deep, keep moist, mulch the seed bed, cover seedbed with some shade, can be sown outdoors in the fall for spring germination

As yew are a slow growing tree you are not likely to see a benifit in your life time, but it will be a great legacy for your children!

Stamp...I suppose that's what happens when folks give threads titles inviting humourous responses....

Let's get it back on topic then folks
