Hello! I found this page by reading a thread on Facebook about tarps, and was thrilled to see a whole community of likeminded peeps on here. I know I am going to lean a lot from all you wise people of the woods.
Its rather horrendous gale-force winds and torrential rain outside at the mo… but this site makes me want to throw on my waterproofs and get out there!

What??? Just watched the video! No way!! Very brave - or mad! Lovely mountain though - I love Wales - am half welsh but only lived there for a few years and used to play truant from school and wander around the mountains near my home all day alone! Don't know why I never got caught ( or in trouble for that matter!) I used to stalk the wild ponies, knew them all and had names for them all!

Awww thanks F0rm4t; I love it here too and never take it for granted. I live in the wild west, and most evening climb to the top of the cliff above 'my' bay to watch the sunset! If wild weather I simply sit on the sea wall at the bay watching the huge waves crash into the rocks!
In fact I love the UK - Cornwall. Lakes, Ireland, Wales, Scotland - we are very spoilt by the variety. :)

Cool. On a meet we mostly just chill out round the fire, cook, maybe do abit of rifle shooting (air rifles and tin cans) spoon carving, chatting, a few beers etc,etc.....! The other lady is on this site, shes called "campinggirl72" she is new on here too and it will be her first meet! Im sure she wouldnt mind if you sent her a message!:)

Hi,
not a silly question.........stick making is making walking sticks. I usually cut the shanks myself (mostly hazel or ash) or buy in more hard to find ones (blackthorn) and add handles from antler or buffalo horn or other types of wood. I often make thumbsticks (longer than walking sticks with a v shape at the top to rest your thumb in).
I'm not skilled or talented enough to do really fancy carving - like dogs head or leaping trout. You can get an idea from what is being sold on here http://www.stickmaker.com/stickmakingshop.htm.

pm me if you want more info about stickmaking

I used to live in Winchester for 10 years + often used to pop over to the island - must be a great place to live.

Hi. My family live down in cowes. And I'm down there every two weeks with work. Usually do a night out with the old man. We normally tie in a little beach casting too.
Managed to get him into stick making and spoon carving.
Good to see an islander on here.

Hello Mike - first islander I have spotted on here - so thrilled! I am the wild west area, my folks live in Cowes though too. My next challenges are spoon making as well as a 'bird block' for my flute - but total beginner in whittling! Thanks for the welcome! :)

Your welcome. Love dropping back home to see the folks. Especially now that work fork out for the ferry.

Even if I don't manage a night out in the trees. I nearly always manage a good walk and forage. There is loads of goodies to be found along the old railways and parkhurst is full of sweet chestnut. Was over at the old battery last week was surprised at the amount of yarrow and vetch around there.

Fab pictures - I am sure I recognise your dad! (But then the island is a small place). I do love Parkhurst, but also Bouldner Forest very much. Actually love all the wilder parts of the island. I take my students to Forest school in Parkhurst and Bouldner and in a few abandoned chalk pits in different places too. One place we love going is Knighton upper woods - they are private, but the owner lets us do Forest Schools there, it is a true old English wood very well managed and coppiced - its beautiful.

He used to work at west island printers - when it was still there and now works at strainstalls.
He also used to do the door at the anchor a long while back when Sue and Doug were still the landlords and I was on the bar.
