Yesterday I went for a walk across Romney Marsh (in Kent) to explore some ruined churches.
The marsh is an oddly beautiful environment that is full of stories of smugglers!
My first port of call was Chapel Bank - the site of an anglo-saxon chapel that was moved in the nineteenth century, stone by stone (!) to a new location.
There are still tombstones atop the hill.

From there I made my way to Fairfield Church. Nothng is more evocative of the marshes than this church, which has been used as a setting for Great Expectations (where the young Pip first encounters Magwitch)

And then on to All Saints Church:

and Midley church:

Despite being an overcast day it was very humid. But my feet stayed bone dry in my new seal skinz socks!
