snareing

put a handfull of snares out last week at work,had a problem rabbit in the orchard,i could have just popped him of with the rifle but there was a couple of nice well worn runs and i do like to keep my hand in.
i think its a vital skill to have,very effective,humane when carried out correctly and leaves you to carry on doing other jobs,food gathering etc and they are working for you the whole time.
there was no fence to snare where i was so it was open ground,i use the glenn waters snare system for this,it sits high and catches correctly every time,i use deer stops on mine which dont tighten fully around the neck,in effect the rabbit is just tethered and sits still,even carries on feeding.

you can see how the snare is knotted and simply wrapped a couple of times around the teeler,when a rabbit is caught this acts as a simple swivel and stops the snare kinking and the rabbit getting tangled.

thanks for the pm sapper...i forgot to mention the law on snareing,by law they must be checked twice within 24hrs,this is the minimum and more is better.
the deer stops and breakaway links are now a legal requirment in scotland and should be law everywhere as they cut out any suffering or non-quarry species getting caught.
they are a very effective method but unless used for pest control should only be used in a survival situation and not just "for the hell of it"...atb kev

Wish it was still legal here. The only animals we are allowed to snare are ptarmigan, alas only in a few districts, mine not among them :-(
