i have my eye on a local copse near wincanton/Mere ,300yds across and long, has 5 ww2 bomb shelters and is deciduous woodland, the owner makes no money from it presently and i was wondering if there was intrest in a syndicate getting to gether to lease it,i am thinking of approaching and offering £500 a year, between 10 folks thats £50 a year for 365 days a year use when ever you want, easy access to the cops as its beside a little used back lane parking withing walking distance or in the copse for 1 or 2 cars, shop 20 minutes walk any one intrested?

Very tempting but economics dictate other wise, it would be over 100miles round journey and at current diesel price's and only getting around 25miles to the gallon SWMBO has said NO :Sorry:but good luck with is looks like a right nice place.

That's a cracking deal, a bit far out for me but I'm sure you'll have no problem filling the quota :)

It would be worth looking at the restrictions though! I think you are limited to something like 28 days a year, can't remember but will look into it. Not that anybody should really know how much it is in use! Also we should probably get a Rally Camping Exemption Certificate from Natural England, this would cover the land owner who otherwise may be classed as running an unauthorised camp site. it is a simple process to obtain a certificate, or maybe we already have one?

I would love to be a part of that however it is just too far away to get any use out of it

Good luck with the project though as it is a good one

good luck with it, yes your correct about the 28 day/camping rules, and although as someone states "who's counting" there's a big difference between an owner over staying by a few days here or there, which locals will turn a blind eye too, and 10 plus bushcrafters turning up 365 days a year,
also before those interested start making plans, perhaps the OP should talk to the land owner, because in all honesty, £500 wouldn't cut it with me, irrelevant on whether the owner uses or makes money from it, it still cost to begin with,
at those quoted prices, lets say the wood cost £30k to buy, the owner would need to rent it out for 60yrs plus to see it actually making any money

That's a great idea Fish. If I was any closer I'd beg the boss to chip in. Sadly... too far for me.

It's a nice idea, but I wouldn't satisfied with renting, especially with other people I don't know (no offence anyone!).

Maybe if it were a little closer I could be persuaded?

It would still take me over an hour to get there which would restrict the number of times I could go. We only have one car and the wife works Saturday nights, she would have to do a 2 hour round trip to drop me and the kids off, just not practical.......

I'm posted to Tidworth in a month so I'd be VERY interested in this! Just have to convince SWMBO it'd be £50 well spent!

A nice patch. I spent the 1st 20 years of my life within 10 minutes walk of here, lots of good memories of dog walks and exploring. I'd join you but I live in Derbyshire now.
