Cheap firepit/woodburner

I am always intrigued by cheap bits of kit like this;

Could be used as a firepit or as it's intended use as a barbecue.

BUT! I was rather thinking that if I bought 2 of these I would have most of the components to make a cheap logburning stove, plus I would have 2 sets of BBQ tools and 2 grills to use over an open fire. Very tempting to order a couple at that price!

Right, read some reviews on this and it's probably going to be a bit flimsy for a logburner. Still worth a punt as a BBQ or firepit though.

I am still looking around at portable BBQ's as a possible source for materials for a lightweight Logburner.

I have burnt logs, coal and charcoal in this and the ikea stainless grill fits on top a treat. I hinged the lid on mine so I can carry things inside and also works as a reflector.

Like it. What I am after is something like that tipped on its end with a chimney.

Probably a bit smaller and lighter as it will be inside a tent or under a tarp. I intend to put my woodgas burner inside it so as to run on wood pellets, but also occasionally to burn small logs.

Was that once a Jerry can? - Hmmm now you've got me thinking!

Indeed they were Jerrycans. Bomb proof and not as heavy as you think with bits cut out.
Just clicked what you mean now, saw your other thread re the woodgas stove inside it.
Could you not do it with one of the larger ammo boxes.

Have you thought about the 5 litre beer kegs ? they are not too thick or heavy to cut a door into & some 1"- 2" SS pipe for a chimney..... there is a plus to this as you get to drink the ale! :evilgrin:

Yes that is one thing I considered,but now I've seen your Jerry can I've looked at smaller ones like this;

Stood on its end, it would already have an aperture for the chimney and I would just have to cut out a door, put in a vent and some foldable legs.

Hi Rasputin, yes, I had one of these a couple of months ago, but the missus threw it out! It was a bit thin though, so don't know how long it would last.

Wonder if I'd get away with some old Hoover pipe as a chimney!

It was a bit thin though, so don't know how long it would last. They last a long time, they are as thick as a tin and as you know hobo stoves etc last almost for ever and the vac pipe will work fine. In reallity you buy the beer so the tin is free,its win win win PS. Also if you have to haul it in & out the weight is crucial...ish
