View Full Version : Could someone reccomend me a bushcraft knife?
I was thinking this...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mora-Companion-Black-Bushcraft-Knife/dp/B00BCIHXTA/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t
Has anyone tried it and it is any good?
What are your thoughts on the Bear Grylls survival knife?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gerber-Bear-Grylls-Ultimate-Sharpener/dp/B00H7M038I/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1389804470&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=bear+grylls+pro+knife
How about the Ray Mears woodlore knife? At £350 the price is a bit of a joke tbh.
http://www.raymears.com/Bushcraft_Product/743-The-Ray-Mears-Bushcraft-Knife/
Any good reccomendations? Ideally I want full tang but its not essential.

What Tony said.
As for moras. Just get anyone of them, the cheaper, the better. This to get you a knife to get you started.
Then save up and get one of the knife makers on here, or elesewhere to make you one if you feel you need something more fancy on your belt.
But if you intend to use your knife as a knife, not as an axe/machete substitute, the most expensive and fancy of knives, won't be able to do anything the cheap 4,99£ Mora won't do for you.

Ditto the above two comments, or if you want a bit of Uncle Rays gear but can only afford a Mora, fear ye not take a look at this and have the best of both worlds HERE! (http://www.raymears.com/Bushcraft_Product/1015-Morakniv-Craftline-HighQ-Robust-Knife-Woodlore-30th-Anniversary-Edition-Pack-of-2/)
Buying the two is only a little Mora (sorry!) expensive than buying one, I bought two and sold the second one :)
Cheers

The Mora this a good starter knife, but in carbon steel Not S/S
.
Sorry but why is carbon better than stainless steel? Could you elaborate? Would that Mora on Amazon be good for basic stuff like working with thin branches and shaving bark for fire kindling? Im not looking to make a canoe or anything.

That's great, I might get that cheap Mora then. It's not full tang though, do I need to worry about this? Are partial tang blades looked down on by bushcrafters? Im a bit of a noob to all this tbh.

I checked a review of the BG survival knife and it seems good enough, full tang, some nice (but unessesary extras) Its design is a bit tacky but it seems to function as a knife.
Also.. is there a difference between a survival and bushcraft knife?

Carbon blades generally holds an edge very well, and are also easier to sharpen. But require some gentle love to keep rust away. I.e, keep the blade dry and give it a drop of oil when you put it away when you come home.
Full tang is only a concern if you are going to use the knife as an axe or a machete. If you are going to use the knife as a knife, there should be no problem.
The gerber will function as a knife. But it's tacky and the design of the blade makes it hard to sharpen. It's more like a military combat knife than a bushcraft knife. But my main gripe with it is that you will pay
a lot of money for a knife that simply ain't worth it's price tag. I.e you are paying for Bear Grills name on it...
The Scandi grind on the Mora knives, and most bushcraft knies makes for easy sharpening to scary sharp that will hold an edge quite well.

I have a mora carbon steel blade that I bought back in 2009,apart from a modification to the back of the knife for striking fire steels,I haven't touched it,it sharpens up razor sharp in a matter of seconds, it's rust prone as people have said but as long as you keep on top of it,it will last,I also have a kukri knife that does all the harder work but I keep my trusty mora on me at all times.

yher i carry a carbon mora heavyduty & a gerber but for me the morakniv is the best £15 i ever spent! the sheaths not amazing but its better than most its lethal sharp and is just so much more friendly in the hand than the gerber bud just give it some oil and it'll love you forever!

I still rank mora very very highly, those things are great to use. Put it this way if you break or loose it you aren't going to cry as they cost peanuts. I only upgraded my knife because I could not because I had to, tbh my old mora does the same job. But look about as Bahco released a twin pack with a laplander and a mora. It costs about £25.

Mora's are great knives - I have a few of them and i have one in my pocket at work every day ad another one permanently rides in my tonka truck. I have the bear grylls survival life (mock all you like!!) And I think its really good. Was a present off the missus and its had six years of constant regular use and abuse. Holds its edge very well, I find it easy to sharpen and it stays shaving sharp. Handle feels comfy for me too. My only gripes are the serrated part of the blade is a bit pointless to me but its getting smaller with each sharpen (I believe you can get hem without serrations now) and the price is high, but jools got mine from amazon.com in the good ole US of A for half the price of the UK!

Hey up Rasputin :-) I kind of miss my bike but the wife won't let me have another! On the flip side I'm loving the 4x4 - heater and radio are luxuries I've missed and the low range is very handy at work!

I carry a Condor Bushlore. To be honest I can't fault it as it's full tang, carbon steel and a great sheath.
