Went out today for a wander, seen the drizzle and couldn't resist it. It was a nice wander, but soaking underfoot even at the top of the brae. Although I did get a nice chunk of wind blown Birch for a kuksa. After the winds we've had it was like a grave yard for them. But the chunk was still green....... Should be easy carved

That's the brae in the woods there
On the way though you couldn't half tell spring was on its way

I love it when the snowdrops are out. I think they are my favourite wild plant.
All in all it was a really nice wander, apart from getting mildly moist and very messy boots.

T^ I'll have to wait another month or so for the snow to melt and to see Crocuses and Snowdrops awaken from their slumber.
Looking forward to your kuksa :).

Ironically this time last year I had 3 feet of snow at my door, February is when we usually get it, but it's been very mild this winter for us.

We've had so many mild winters that the locals forgot what a 'normal' winter was...either that, or most of them are from out-of-state in the South :p.

Weather is wierd though, it's getting colder on average here just been a freak season I suppose.

Little update on that kuksa. I carved it all, and sadly it split. It isn't the first to do it and it won't be the last. Not to worry though it's not as if it wasn't going to be used as a porridge oat scoop. To be honest I prefer my Kuplika when I'm out as it won't shock crack and weighs next no nothing.

This year we've had major temperature fluctuations - for awhile things hovered around -5 C, and then we had two weeks of -12 C temps (thank you, Canada :D), followed by a warming period above freezing...in some places upwards of 10 C. The constant melting and re-freezing took down the gutters on one side of our house with a very loud clang, jolting me right out of bed. But hey, at least the snow is still excellent for sledding on! :p

I must concur with you about the Kuplika - it has earned its place in my cookset ;).

Aye I enjoy carving them but every bit of wood is different and I can't guarantee a kuksa at because the weather here is all over the place. Plus I can get a tiny bit precious about my carving, I wouldn't want to damage it when I spent hours and hours working on it.
