If it's ultra compact you're after. I'd forget the MSR and go for an Alpkit Kraku. They are made by FireMaple, weigh only 35g, and pack down to around the size of clipper lighter. https://www.alpkit.com/products/kraku

I've been using one almost every weekend for a while now. They work very well, and have a good range of adjustment. They benefit from being used in a sheltered area when simmering, but they don't like a heatshield too close to them.

Wow that is super small. How about portable gas canisters? they also are something I'd rather be compact.

@ Tony how long would one of those gas cannisters last?

Would a portable stove like that and a crusader cup be enough to do all my basic cooking in?

I'll second the wilko stove!!!Weight depends on what size bottle you attach it to!
Have you though of a "PENNY STOVE",these spirit stoves are easily made n for a quick brew up are great. made one yesterday (2.5"x1")out of two pate tins.uses 15ml(3teaspons)of meths to boil a n emamal mug of water,in less than 5 mins.

Building Stoves !even on paper is quite enjoyable.n have built quite a few over the last week.Out of "scrap"!
The best performer been the double coil,Spirit stove.Easy to fill,n light!produces a good hot flame.
Yesterday, whilst making a little penny stove out of the pate tins,(2.5"x1") I had for lunch!I had to go into garage for some solder.Bottom of my Plumbing Bucket,I found a mixed bag of "YORKSHIRE FITTINGS"it occured that these are LEGGO for stove builders.Couple of T junc,Bit of pipe,(15 or 22mm)couple of end caps or pennies,Bends could be added to form potstands.(though, then it wouldnt fit into 2oz Bacci Tin!.or Hexi stove.)
Made a 3 section 22mm pipe stove.Intention to be able to run them one at a time.Alas. you need one to heat the other etc. After a little fettling.on full it boiled two+ mugs in 3 minutes n out in 5 mins, for 15mm of fuel each tube. Not light but the heat n power it gave out Great.
Right back to the drawing board,(back of n envolope,lol)n more R n D.

Aye I do tend to enjoy the plumbing fittings method. I have enough of them, plus with a 2x22mm end feed stop ends and about 70mm of 22mm pipe, solder one end up you have a match case too.

I've used all sorts of stoves. I find the penny stoves are great for boiling water on a day out, same as alcohol stoves, but I do like the convenience of a gas stove for multiple days. They're a lot easier to cook on, with much more adjustment, they tend to boil water faster, and weight for weight, the fuel lasts a lot longer too. A 230g gas cylinder will last several weekends of brews and three simple meals a day. An alcohol stove will get through about 500ml in a weekend easy. 500ml is 500g, so the fuel is a lot lighter with gas.

I have a gas stove, don't tend to use it much though. Reason was a nasty incident where the seals went on my pal (Farmboy), and went off like a rocket at Rockcliffe near Dalbeattie.

Both very instant,n convienient for quick brew or Brekkie.but for "cooking if one cant have an open fire. The Wood Gas Burners fed with Cat Lit pellets. Will boil you water, for a brew.,whilst you cook your meal, and still boil more water for washing up an a further brew!on one filling!

I use a Bushbox pocket stove it weighs almost nothing but is built and have boiling water in 10 mins. And even has a ash tray to protect the ground. Great tool. It sits in my mug ready to go. http://bushcraftthroughmytime.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/review-bushbox-outdoor-pocket-stove.html?m=1
