View Full Version : A Thrush?

This morning I saw this bird flying around the garden.
I thought it was a song thrush. But when it came to a stop it didn't look quite right for a song thrush - a bit too grey.
So I thought it may be a mistle thrush. But I'm not so convinced of that either. Maybe a bunting or pipit?
I don't know.
I was about thrush size. It looks a bit plumper than it was in the picture because it's puffed its feathers up. But if anyone knows what it is I'd love to know.

I think Dunnock is the answer.
I've checked my books - right habitat (gardens), right behaviour (swooping in and out of bushes and hedges), and pretty much right size (I thought it was a young song thrush originally, so thrush size, but erring on the size of small thrush).
Dunnock it is!
Cheers, chaps.

No, too small for a fieldfare.
Fieldfares are quite distinctive - there's something Frankensteinian about them since, to me, they look like they've been put together with parts from lots of different birds.
No, definitely not a fieldfare. I think Dunnock is the answer.

Spot on or sometimes known as a hedge sparrow.

Dunnock

I see quite a few of them when I'm out walking the dog :)

hello,
Just a wild guess as you mentioned the 'grey' could well be a Dunnock. I could pass it over to a mate at the RSPB Reserve..
