i know its probably all been done before but now i own both i thought i would put them through their paces while pruning the orchard.
the big differance between the two blades is the silky cuts only on the draw/pull cut and is a dedicated greenwood/pruning saw where the laplander cuts on the push and pull stroke.
first impressions are they are both good cutters but the silky seemed to go through 6" timber a tad quicker and leaves a glass like finish, also there is no danger of bending the ultra thin blade as you pull to cut.
although a tad slower on the cut the blade feels stronger on the laplander and is more of an all rounder, also i found the non-stick coating worked really well.
i have used both blades for the best part of 3 days now and both have held up admirably retaining their sharpness.
the silky is a bit shorter than the laplander but the laplander is easier to use with the extra lengh of handle.
when i picked up the laplander i got a spare blade for it which is exactly the same as the silky's blade and is also a dedicated pruner,i tried it on a few branches and it cuts as fast as the silky so for the sake of 30 secs to change the blade you can have the best of both.
just my first impressions..a few pics...oh and i got enough wood for 7-8 spoons :happy-clapping:..atb kev

Nice one bud.
Thanks for taking the time to write up your review and post the pics! Look lovely!

I think I've lost my laplander somewhere in the local reserve :mad2:
...Then again, it could be in front of my nose in the garage! :rolleye:

T^ That's a lovely orchard :).
Great review, as well. I own a Silky (170mm Pocketboy) and I'm always delighted with the very smooth surface it leaves on the wood. The smoother the cut, the faster the tree can heal ;). I use mine for both collecting firewood and the occasional pruning task.

cheers chap...the healing is a big thing for me with the apple trees as they are very old now and suseptible to disease so the cleaner the cut the better.
the bahco leaves a lovely cut but the silky is like polished glass.
i also have a larger extendable silky..i'm glad i booked it to the house as the bill was £80

Indeed - I had to do some pruning on the apple in my front yard because some of the branches had scars exposing the heartwood .
If I'm not mistaken, the teeth on Silky saws are hardened to 67 Rc ;).
Is that the Silky Katana?

I don't remember either :p. Mine has the black handle, but the teeth look the same as the one you have.

I found between the two the silky seems to be more prone to stacking. I like both overall though, either is a sound investment.

I have never been able to justify the prices charged by Silky. Their saws are very good but...

Silky is actually not that expensive, when you consider the cost to make one compared to other folding saws. IMO I prefer the Bahco....... And it's cheaper.
