I'm ready to get rid of my Army Fullsize Bergen. Its far too heavy for me, it kills my back so I am looking for a replacement. An expensive brand name is not what I am looking for but one that will last me a few years and won't fall to bits at the seams as soon as you breathe on it. I would prefer something with two large side pockets like the Bergen but just big enough to hold everything including my hammock, tarp and underquilt, including food and the usual bits and pieces.

Secondhand would be ok if in good nick but something in the price range of around 40 - 50 ponds if new.

What do you reckon guys.

Thanks Neil

Berghaus Munro is my personal choice, then add side pockets? :)

hello,
Cyclops 72Litre hands down.. must be same issue date around 30 years old :confused2: although I still use both my 2 side pockets DPM (Berghaus with SASS Yokes) & MTP (Karrimor) as day sacks.

If you can find one Lowe Alpine Sting is great. I borrowed one but could never find one, if I could i'd snaffle it up no questions.

Another vote for the LA Sting. I picked one up recently for £50 with side pouches. It is in DPM, but to my mind DPM looks kind of retro now!
The suspension system of shoulder straps and hip belt are superb and make carrying a much easier task for worn backs and shoulders like mine. I've also found a pouch to fit on the front PALS webbing to give it three pouches and increased versatility.
I'd take a pic, but it's in the shed and even Noah would be impressed by the rain here this morning!
On another note and although it may not apply to you (it certainly does to me!), shedding body weight will help at least as much as shedding kit weight in terms of reducing the strain on ageing backs and especially knees. ;)
