Hi all,

can any of you folk tell me what the Defence 1 is like?

I have read lots about the Defence 4 and seen one in a shop but there is very little info/opinion available on the Defence 1.

What I like the Def1 is the waterproof and windproof qualities of the fabric which means I wont need a bivi bag when used under a tarp. This means that I can have a sleeping bag that weighs just 1050g without the additional weight of a bivi bag. I'm into being a light as possible so that's important to me.

My main question is how warm is the Def1? Is the temp rating of +3*C accurate do you think.

Given that the Def4 seems to be considered a proper 4 season bag with 1000g of insulation, it seems likely to me that the Def1 with 550g of it should be a good 2 season bag.

Also, I can't picture in my mind how I would get on with the face hole instead the usual hood.

Is it possible/comfy to stick your head out with the zip not done right up when the weather is warm?

What do you reckon?

Thanks for your input.

I believe that HM Forces may be getting Carinthia in the future to replace Snugpak

Do you mean the Def1 will be replacing the army jungle bag?

If so we may be able to get the Def1 as surplus at some point.

Not sure, you'll have to ask some one who is more current with the latest MOD kit

Comfort and season ratings depend on the person too...a larger person will generally be warmer than a skinny one in the same bag as it takes longer to lose heat on a larger mass.

I understand that but I'm trying to gauge opinion before I decide whether to buy or not as it's not a cheap bag.

Carinthia sleeping bags are used by the army and replacing the old issue bags, just wish I was aloud to keep mine instead of handing it back in.

Not a great deal of help here as you're interested in the D1, but I have a D4 200cm, I'm 6 foot and 18st, plenty of room and I've used it in lots of cold weather, It is way too warm in anything much above freezing wearing very little but underwear.

exceptionally easy to exit using the centre zip. As for the face hole I rarely have it fully sealed to the 6 inch hole but I have a few times and it's not an issue to me (I have had breath condensation a couple of times around the hole)

packs down to about 12 x 8 inches and is light weight,

All I can say is - if the D1 is built on the same lines it should be a cracker of a bag. I did look at the one with sleeves but I'm not sure I would sleep properly if I didn't feel tucked in (if you know what I mean).

Hope this is of some use, Tiggs

That's a Defence 4, not a Defence 1.

I have both the Defence 4 and the Tropen, and use them together as a full winter bag. The Tropen is pretty much the same rating as the Defence 4 but , to me at least, far preferable as a summer bag as the full length side zip, standard hood and insect mesh are all much better in warm summer months for regulating comfort than the small face enclosure type ( which is good when it's very cold )

No its the British army issue version of the Defence 4 ...a 3 season bag , if it had been the Defence 4 I would not have posted it.
The new British army sleeping bag is more like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dutch-G3-Army-Surplus-Sleeping-Bag-3-Season-Mummy-Style-with-Stuff-Sack-Repaired-/231070469384?pt=UK_SportingGoods_SleepingBags_SM&hash=item35ccdf8d08 which is not a Carinthia either as it does not contain G-loft but is based on the old german army sleeping bags just like the Carinthia bags are.
you say the defence and the Tropen are pretty much the same yet the Defence 4 bags have a comfort rating of -15 whilst the Tropen has a comfort rating of +5 .

Typo - meant to say Tropen and Defence 1 were pretty much the same rating. And apart from the labelling, the bag you linked IS the Defence 4 , it even specifically says so on your link.

Really? Why are we "arguing" about something you posted but have not apparently read? Try scrolling down the page on your link ....

These are made by Carinthia, the world renowned cold weather sleeping bag specialist which this one would be a 'Defence 4' model if bought commercially

Thanks you proved my point ....it says "would be a defence 4 model " that means its not however it is the same model as this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Season-Dutch-Army-Sleeping-Bag-plus-Liner-and-Compresssion-Sack-/181157822185?nma=true&si=uv3VZzGWXF0jYZh2Why%252FmUIjJfg%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 which is Made by Carinthia for the Dutch and British army but is a lower spec with no G= loft and without the micro-porous outer fabric .
Really? Why are we "arguing" about something you posted but have not apparently read? Try scrolling down the page on your link .... i'm not arguing with you but you did say I was wrong without explanation when you posted that what I had put in my link was a Carinthia defence 4 .
Try having a read up on the subject matter and enlighten yourself and remember just because you think it's so doesn't mean it is so .

Carinthia did'nt make the Dutch bags - they were made under licence from Carinthia by a Spanish company called FECSA

ok lol but I was hoping Claverouse would link Cumberland and Fecsa and you may see that Fecsa also give out manufacturing licence for certain military sleep systems .
