In a thread a couple of days ago I posted that I bought a Special Forces hooped bivi.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221432396352

As this does not come with the hoop, does anybody know where I can buy replacements for it please. I have got a feeling that this bivi is double hooped and not single, am I right.

Cheers

Chubbs, I made a hoop for my hammock (as I didn't like the top in my face all night). I got a fibre glass rod from B&Q and also some metal tube.

Like this --> http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/nails-screws-fixings-hardware/profile-metal-sheets-metal-rods/tubing___metal_rods/-specificproducttype-round_rods/FFA-Concept-Glass-Fibre-Rod-White-L-1000mm-x-Dia-3mm-9283975?skuId=9293675

I cut the rods to length and then used some epoxy resin glue to fix the tube to it to form a sleeve.

A picture paints a thousand words.....

Great idea.

I was thinking about making one earlier to save me spending on new ones if found.

You have saved me all the hassle.

Thanks mate.

No problem. I did two things when making mine. I put tape around the pole at the point I wanted to cut it. This helped to reduce the fibre glass splinters that inevitably occur. Also, an obvious one I know, but unless you can estimate the length accurately (maybe using a thin bit of hazel branch) cut the poles longer than you need as it's easier to shorten them!

Happy hoop making!

Hi Neil I've got two brand new ones exactly like this, if you want I'll send you a set of my poles for you to either copy/make/ buy or find so you know then you have the exact item, and when you've got them you can send them back, or if it easier ill measure them for you, there are 6 in all, and yes its a two hooped bivvi, unfortunately I can't give them to you as they belong to the bivvi,
Cheers

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Bill

If you could measure the poles, I would appreciate it. Are they the same thickness that Matt has used in his pictures.

They also did some aluminium tube that was a perfect fit as a "sleeve" but I couldn't find that on their website.

Hi mate
Here are the measurements you require
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/08/ybe8u6e5.jpgthis is one length you will need three poles for one hoop
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/08/y3a2yjyz.jpgthis is the length of three poles fitted together
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/08/ude6uvum.jpgthis is the thickness
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/08/varagagu.jpgand this is the other end of the pole where the fit into each other. (Don't mean to tell you to suck eggs mate but the more info the better)
Anymore info you need just ask
Cheers

I went up to B&Q earlier but they had no fibreglass poles. I found some nice white, plastic tubing. Not a chance at over a fiver a metre.

I found mine with the threaded metal rods but it was in a larger store. They definately have them on their website - the link is further up the thread.

The only place I can order and collect it from is St Austell nearly 20 miles away. Our local B&Q is a large store but never has anything you want. I will pop up to Homebase later on.

I did check an online store but they wanted £20.00 a hoop. Not a chance in Hell I would pay that.

Chubbs; check out Penrose Outdoors in Truro - upstairs has loads of tent kit at reasonable rates...

Have you tried go out doors? They sell spare tent poles and might do some your thickness and you can cut them down, or old cheep foldaway tents off eBay or golf practice folding chip nets, I'll keep thinking

Thanks for the link Joe.

What I did buy off Ebay earlier was a set of these.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131186631913?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

I think these will be perfect. Also includes a tube to keep them all together when not in use.

The cable pullers turned up today.

They look perfect for the job so I heated one of the ferrules to remove it from the main pole. Cut the pole down to the size needed which once it is added to the others will be the correct size of 49 inches.

It fits perfectly and does the job for just over a fiver. Now to make the next one.

I don't think the B&Q route would have been cheaper. You've done all right there!

Because of the size, weight and flexibility, loads of different sized bivis, shelters and such like can be made using them.
