just finished this one (two fingered neck knife) made from an old file for a friend with a zebrano topped 8mm fire steel. tip of the blade along the back is left rough ground for "striking"

BigT and I was only talking about making our first knives a coupleof days ago. This might be the inspiration we need.

Nice knife. My guess is that with a lanyard with a knot in it you would get a more stable grip, as I've seen on the CRKT Doug Ritter? The shape looks very good, giving a nice slicing action and I like the idea of pairing it with a ferrocerium rod.

thats the good thing about old files, they can be picked up cheap. have had a few different makes and all have made good blades though can be tough to work even after annealing. i look for any that are stamped with a makers mark, british "stubbs" and american "nicholson" ones seem to work well but can require quite high tempering temperatures. is best to start low and work up till the blade edge no longer crumbles when putting an edge on because the steel is still too hard, some i've had needed almost 400c to temper
