View Full Version : Next cornwall meet.....any ideas on dates!?

Hiya,
Seeing as the last meet was a great success and everyone had a good time (especially when the tarp decided to dump a load of water down my neck.....) I think it's time to start planning the next one! Location will prob be woodland valley farm again as other permissions are a little lacking at the moment! (Watch this space though;)). Most probably an overnighter on a Saturday, I could also do a Friday night too if anyone else is up for it? So, anyone have any preference to dates?
Hi Big T - Is that near Ladcock? I have no preference on dates as I need to juggle child care into the equation too. See when big sis can look after little sis! Does anyone ever take their kids/dogs along by the way? I have never been to a BC group meet before so totally green! :confused2: Do you bring food to share etc.? Looking forward to it!

Hiya Julz! Yeah, its just outside Ladock! They have a website with directions etc but don't say much about the bushcraft side of things. Dogs and kids are fine, we are a well behaved bunch (well until the kids are in bed....Lol!) We basically have a fire to cook on and socialize around, a few sneaky beers if you want (or whatever's your poison!) We usually do a communal meal, something like stew or chilli etc if you like that kind of thing or your welcome to cook for yourself. Woodland Valley is suitable for both hammocks or ground dwelling. If you need to borrow any kit then let us know, we have enough between us to equip a small army! Anything else you are unsure about then give me a shout!:)
Great thanks Big T! About 3 hour drive so that's doable... I will aim to escape for some grown up time, but it's good to know that I could bring along my dog Frodo and/or 10 yr old if pushed! I have my own kit/tent no worries, been looking into getting a hammock as they seem gentler on the back! Great! Thanks for all that ;)

Hi Julz
Woodland Valley is great for a camp. Its very basic, no mod cons apart from a long drop or composting toilet, but its a great atmosphere when there is a crowd. Chris Jones the Farmer, is a top guy You can buy his homemade bacon and sausages from his house and he only charges a fiver a night each to camp.
There is a pond down the bottom of the valley in the woods but it can get pretty muddy, as we found out last weekend !!.
It will be great to meet you both.
Thank you Chubbs, it sounds idyllic, and there's even a toilet!! I am used to camping out - can't get my head around calling it "wild camping" - but that's what they call it these days. Lived in Shetland for many years and you can pretty much camp anywhere - so I am well used to leaving mod cons at home. I avoid camp sites whenever possible though have only camped in the Lakes off-site in England. I am really looking forward to this!

That's good to hear.
I might bring along one of the kids as well. It will more than likely be my daughter as she loves been out with her dad. To be truthful, I can't go very far without her !!.

Ok mate, will keep ya informed!
I can do from 21st onwards. Saturdays suit me best personally but possibly Fridays. At the risk of sounding girly it would give me great reassurance to go on my first camp with campinggirl there. No offence fellas just cos I'm a newbie and about to head out into the wilderness with a bunch of gentlemen I have never met. Please don't be offended by my nervous disposition!! This is a whole new world for me ;-) sorry... :-/

No worries, I understand! We have had a couple of women come along with the same concerns (campinggirl and islandlady). It does seem a little daunting when you think about it! I had similar concerns on my first meet, going to the woods to meet a bloke I had met on the internet! Lol! If it puts your mind at rest then we can find a time when Lyn (campinggirl) can come along too.
Thanks so much for understanding. That in itself is reassuring! I haven't seen or read anything to make me uneasy - just my over active imagination! Looking forward my first adventure :-)

AJ; you'd be surprised how many people inside and outside of disaster relief have said the same!! Fallen and windblown trees always appear in disaster areas and pose a real threat. Not only to aid getting through on roads and tracks but also the resulting issues when they fall onto buildings, houses, etc. The issue that we witnessed in the Philippines last November was inexperienced chainsaw users and elements of rescue teams just knocking them down and causing further damage or compounding problems. We were asked to fell a huge pine tree in a school playground which had moved and exposed its root plate; we argued that the tree needed righting not felling as it provided a huge amount of shade for the kids and we would come back to it in a matter of days. The following day it had been felled and straight through the only surviving roof on one of the school buildings!! We've had a huge positive response from other agencies, now we have our official charity number and the teams launch this weekend coming, there's a huge amount of work to gain the all important 'proof of concept' and ' and make a response.
As I should be away from the arb show on the afternoon, I might be back in time to meet you all over at woodland valley fingers crossed!
Hat off to your work Janso! Hope the launch goes well :happy-clapping:

I have emailed woodland valley farm, just waiting to hear back. Shouldn't be a problem! Probably going to knock up a communal meal if anyone wants it, possibly a stew of some kind (maybe some squirrel if I have any luck hunting tomorrow).

From this week I will start bringing the toilet tent and a shovel. I think it will make it much easier for everybody in the long run.

Sorry to hear that Tony, dont stay in bed too long fella you lose muscle tone and that makes it worse. Ive had one for 43 yrs, It took them 25 yrs to diagnose degenerative disc disorder and offer pain killers. Over the years of researching the subject I dont take pain killers unless Ime on my knees cos they mask what your body is telling you and you tend to do what you shouldnt because of them. 85% of your posture is muscle tone, the spine is mainly there to protect your nerves so if you stay in bed to much your losing posture. All the best T I know how debilitating it can be, Ken:(

I'm getting bored around the house now and can't do anything to occupy myself, also being self employed means that I'm paying for the privilege! Lol! Hi guys. big t sorry to hear of your back. I've had probs many years ago, you really can't rush these things. Your back needs care first and foremost! There will always be other meets! Chubbs I was concerned about the forecast too with bringing my kiddy. So sadly of it is looking grim closer to the time I won't be coming either. :( don't mean to sound like a fair weather camper bit with kids on tow it's a different matter. Cold wet weather will not serve your back well either Big T. Healing wishes to you ;-)

You're right Julz, its not good when its tipping down. The kids get bored and you are constantly trying to keep them entertained, so it ends up doing the same as what you normally do at home on a rainy day.
I will keep a check on the weather and see what happens. If its not looking good, I think it would be best to cancel, especially as the health of BigT is not looking good, poor lad !!.
I agree Chubbs. Let me know what your thoughts are nearer the w/end and take it from there. Poor fella, I know how painful that can be. All will be well when the time is right.

Big T you can't rush it mate as you will do more damage matey. Hi Guys
I am based in Truro and would love to meet up with some of the local buscrafters. I am interested in learning bushcraft but it is not so much fun on your own.
I went to woodland valley a couple of weeks ago as I sold my open canoe to them.
I met the owner and we could have talked for hours. I is a very interesting guy.

Hiya mate! Your more than welcome to come along, the more the merrier! Seeing as no one has thrown any dates around when are you free? Chris Jones (owner of woodland valley) is a real nice guy.:)
Chris is a really nice guy. We had so much in common. He has invited me over in July when they are having some sort of gathering and will be firing up the rocket mass heater.
Even if we do not manage to organise a mass gathering I would be interested in meeting up with local bushcrafters or going fishing or foraging or just a walk with the dogs and a pint.
Bushcraft has always been an interest to me ever since I was a kid but I haven't done anything practical for many many years.
I have thought about signing up for a course but in my mind I know this would be a cop out and would be transferring to onus on learning to someone else.
I think the key is to get out and about regularly and use a small number of core skills
cheers

Ok mate, we will prob be out at woodland valley in the next few weeks if you wanna pop along. We normally meet up on a Saturday afternoon and stay overnight, in tents/bivis or hammocks. A communal meal is normally on the go if you want some (some stew or chilli etc). We spend the time sat around the fire cooking, wood carving, chill in out and having the odd (!?) beer. If you don't have any kit or need to borrow anything then let us know, between us we have enough gear to equip a small army!:)
Excellent.
I do have a small amount of equipment most of which I haven't actually used so it will be good to try it out whilst in the company of people who know what they are doing.
I have a tarp, a bivy bag and a sleeping bag. I would love to try out a camping hammock sometime.
I will PM you my contact details

Saturday 21st June at woodland valley farm, overnighter. I might go for the Friday night too if anyone fancies it? Will sort out communal munch if anyone wants some. Taking my air rifle for a bit of hunting, so maybe have a little shooting competition (nowt serious). Feel free to bring your rifle along if you have one.
I have a very cheap .177 that will need zeroing in I expect. I will bring that if I can. I might be cycling over to woodland valley so may have to limit what I take.
I would love to learn about hunting and how to prepare rabbits etc.
Do you know if Chris has any archery targets and WV? I could bring some archery equipment and give a little tuition if people were interested

Where about are you traveling from? It's possible I could give you a lift if that helps? I'm not sure if Chris has any targets but I'm sure we could knock something up!:)
Just from Truro but I am on a single speed bike so load carrying is restricted.

Where did ya go?
15:09 Saturday. Wow, the weather! I can hardly stand up in the torrential.... er... sunshine. Mind you, still time for a blizzard before tea.
Up here on the English border ([emoji6]) it has, in fact, chucked it down a few times since I made this smug post [emoji1]. Hope to make the next one!

Will we be cooking entirely on a fire or do we bring a stove.
My main stove is playing up at the moment. I need to get some seals for it I think

We normally cook the main meal on the fire (unless we have a rack of sticky ribs or break out the camp chip pan...;)). Stoves are used for a quick brew in the morning but don't worry we will have plenty to go around! If you have a heatproof mug/pan/small kettle then I have a lynx can burner you can have that runs on meths (which we have loads of!)

Like BigT just said, don't worry about any gear that you don't have, we have a good selection between us all. If you want, I could bring you my spare hammock and you could try sleeping in that for the night. I have a 3 x 3 and a 4 x 3 tarp so we are sorted for that.
Might even bring the chip pan like BigT mentioned, it hasn't been used for a while !!.

I do have a tarp but an extra tarp is never a bad thing. I have an army arctic sleeping bag but I think this might be overkill this time of year. I do have a summer bag but I might just bring a blanket.
To be honest I am just looking forward to having a beer with some new friends around a fire in the woods
Really looking forward to it

The artic sleeping bag will be too warm at the moment, but I do have a homemade underquilt for it and a couple of lightweight summer bags, one which has been turned into a topquilt.
If you like a few beers and a chat around the fire, you will fit in no problem. Be great to meet you.

The camp site was basic for the very steep price!!! I slept very badly as the new mat wouldn't stay inflated, but loved the morning bird song and woodland walks. Can't complain to being out doors for 2 nights though :)

No it just didn't stay up at all, its the valve I think? I am hoping i can take it back to mcsalvers as I paid £16 for it :/ if it does have a hole in it how would I locate it mate?
Big T
09-06-2014, 06:20 PM
Is it a self inflating mat or an air bed? To fine the leak blow it up and put it under water, you will see bubbles escaping where it's leaking. If you have a vague idea where it's leaking then you can spread some fairy liquid around where you think it's leaking, it will bubble where air is leaking. If it's a self inflating mat and you put it under water make sure that the valve is fully closed as you don't want water getting inside as they are filled with foam.

Rabbit are a bit thin on the ground at woodland valley, I will ask Chris if there are any in his surrounding fields. There are squirrels in the woods that make good eating, will have to take the rifle for a mooch about and see what we can bag!
I have eaten many rabbits as a child. We used to have rabbit least once a week and pigeon but I have never eaten squirrel before.
I am really looking forward to next weekend.

I'd love to drop by T, but things are still up in the air with me. Me and Mrs AJ had to move out of my mother-in-laws house (I have another name for her, like a pet name, but different), so we're in a caravan at the moment. aman, I'm looking for anything full time at the moment. I used to work in IT, I was a taxi driver "up North" for 10 years, I will happily work as an Admin in an office, stack shop shelves or hold a ladder for somebody, oh, and I've renovated houses, installed stud walls and wood burning stove! Practical, trustworthy and good looking, what more could anyone ask for? [emoji1]
Oh, and at the moment I'm near Callington but willing to go anywhere in Cornwall. If anyone's got any ideas, PM me so as not to derail this fine thread. :)

Modest too...lol.Best of luck in getting sorted!
p.s. must also have the patience of a saint...too.if you were a cabbie "up north"..
Right, Where and when are we going to meet up?
Are we all going straight to the site or are we going to meet up Saturday morning and have a breakfast somewhere before moving on to the Site?
There is a decent greasy spoon in Truro by the bus station.

Sorry I've been off radar. We've had a few changes in the household and this has had a big impact on finances. I don't think I'll be able to get out to Cornwall till later in the summer. Hope you all have a fab time! Solstice blessings everyone!! :-)
wow I had a great time in the woods. I slept in a hammock for the first time and loved it. Had some great food (thanks Chubbs) great conversation and a few beers around the fire.
Ended up just Bit T and I in the end (I will let Chubbs tell that story). Fried breakfast and coffee and a lazy morning.
When are we going again? Need to stay longer than one night next time.
Thanks to Big T and Chubbs for allowing me to share there spot

Great to meet you Paul, it was a pleasure, even though it was only for a couple of hours !!!.
Right, where do I start !!!.
All day we had been having problems with the car. Got sorted by late afternoon but had to travel to Truro in really hot temperatures with no windows working, couldn't open the fuel cap and only had about 60 miles left before dry. I even commented earlier that this weekends camp wasn't supposed to happen, but my youngest daughter Rebecca was really looking forward to it so I bit the bullet and carried on, what a mistake I made.
Once the tent was put up we had dinner and just got sorted for the evening around the fire. Rebecca wanted Marshmallows on a stick so there she sat with a knife making a point on it, and now you all know what's coming next. Becky knows how to use a knife, she always handles one with the respect it deserves but on this occasion she slipped and went straight through three fingers near the knuckles. She screamed and within a couple of seconds I had hold of her hand as I didn't want her to see what she had done and how bad it really was.
For the fist time ever I forgot to pack my first aid kit but BigT grabbed his and I bandaged her up and took her to hospital. Poor kid, we waited over two hours before she saw the Triage nurse as the place was full of fifty something's with coughs and sore arms !!.
One of the cuts was nearly to the bone and they were seriously considering operating. My girl was so brave all the way from the beginning and we finally got home nearly seven hours later plus 5 very neat stitches at five in the morning.
To top it all off, a little cute bunny decided to play dodge the headlights, but came of worse. A sad end to a terrible day.
Today is another day. Becky still got up at 8.30 after only three hours sleep, not bad for an eight year old. She is feeling a little sorry for herself, which is to be expected but she will be fine.
Lessons learnt over this. I will NEVER forget my first aid kit again and will buy her a glove for when she uses a knife in the future. I'm not going to wrap her in cotton wool over this, she wouldn't let me, but I will make it safer for her.
